Summary/Abstract: The Romanians were not a warlike nation self-differentiating and being characterized by others as welcoming in peacetime and tolerant in war. When the circumstances forced it, Romania fought for its interests. Result of popular humanism and the reception of the humanitarian conventions into the national law, followed by a thorough training of the army on their provisions, Romanians' behavior in times of armed conflict was based on compliance with the laws and customs of war. Even if there were certain circumstances and some excesses, like that of the reprisals from Odessa in October 1941 or the unresolved until today „terrorists” in December 1989 and all the vicissitudes of the dictatorships experienced by the country, the historical elements of the wars waged by Romania demonstrate the effectiveness of the implementation of the international humanitarian law in our country.
