Interaction Between Religion and Culture in Case of the Roerich Movement

Summary/Abstract: Straipsnyje nagrinėjama religijos ir kultūros sąveika, remiantis naujųjų religinių judėjimų pavyzdžiais ir surinkta faktine medžiaga. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad kultūros ir religijos sąveika stipriau pasireiškia teosofų bendruome- nėse nei kituose religiniuose judėjimuose. Tai lėmė, visų pirma, rusų menininko Nikolajaus Rericho (1874–1947) išplėtota kultūros formuluotė: N. Rerichas teigė, jog kultūra yra šventas, amžinas ir begalinis fenomenas. Antra, tam įtakos turėjo įvairių teosofinių grupių kultūrinė veikla Rytų Europoje. Straipsnyje siekiama atskleisti, kaip religiniai veiksniai skatina įsitraukti į tam tikrą kultūrinę veiklą ir, priešingai, kaip kultūriniai veiksniai lemia tam tikras religines praktikas. The article examines the interaction between religion and culture with reference to new religious groups, and it is based on the analysis of fieldwork. The findings indicate that the interaction between culture and religion is stronger in the case of theosophical groups than other new religious movements. This may be explained, firstly, by a particular re-definition of culture elaborated by the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich (1874–1947): culture as sacred, eternal, infinite phenomenon. Secondly, by the cultural activities of various theosophical groups in the Eastern Europe. The author seeks to explore how religious forces propel group members toward certain cultural activities and, conversely, how cultural forces induce certain religious and practice.
