Summary/Abstract: Today, about five centuries after Ambroise Paré described the existence of femoral neck fractures, and more than a century after the first attempts for internal fixation, the treatment of this devastating injury is still associated with uncertain prognosis. The long history of the treatment of femoral neck fractures, abundant with names of many prominent authors from different surgical époques, could be a source of inspiration for finding modern treatment decisions. This review is dedicated to the history of the internal fixation of the fractures of the femoral neck over the last 130 years, with the most significant implant designs, concepts and methods presented and briefly discussed.
