Faculty of public health at Medical university Plovdiv - occurrence, development and approval. Role in the health system

Summary/Abstract: The period of creation, development and establishment of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) at the oldest higher educational institution in Plovdiv – the Medical University, was tracked down. The challenges which have been overcome for the legitimization of the branches of the fundamental Social medicine – Administrative and health management, Healthcare, Healthcare management, Public health and health management, have been reflected. The brief historical reference outlines the leading personal factors and constituents for the implementation of the idea and the accompanying pshycho-emotional atmosphere for the establishment of the new academic structure. The preconditions of our health system for reorganization and upgrade of the education in this sphere have been synthesized. The new base of the Fourth faculty is located in the reconstructed floor of a building erected at the beginning of the 1960s, named after its first lecturer, Prof. Dr. Todor Zahariev. It was opened by the Head of a governmental delegation and inaugurated by the Universal patriarch. The stages of development of the institutionalization of the Faculty of Public Health – a resolution of the Academic Counsel for establishment of a new department (Healthcare, currently Healthcare Management), accreditations, development of a project for opening of FPH, a resolution of the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, publishing in the State Gazette, have been documented. The preparation of new generation of managers in the area of Public health appears to be a guarantee for the positive redirection and renewal of the processes in healthcare.
