(Φρουριον) Νεαπολισ in the Macedonian List of Buildings (Historical and Geographical Context)

Summary/Abstract: Νεάπολις, the fortress from the period of Late Antiquity is recorded by historian Procopius in his Buildings, more precisely in the list of Justinian’s fortifications in Macedonia from the IV Book. The focus of the article is put on more detailed examination of possible localization of the fortress by analyzing the three potential places of identification. Namely, considering the written evidence of ancient sources, results from the archaeological researches and personal experience with the text/composition of Procopius’s De aedificiis we propose as probable at least three, equally convincing identifications – with Neapolis/ Kavala, Neapolis on the east coast of Kassandra/Chalkidiki peninsula and Neapolis (Liаpsisti) near Kozani in West Macedonia region of Greece.
