Summary/Abstract: The etymology of the names of two Late Antique fortified cities from Thessaly - Echinaios and Gomphoi were examined. Obviously, names of the cities are closely connected with the unique configuration of the terrain. According to our opinion, the name of the city Gomphoi is derivated from the greek term gÒmfow ’picket, pin, nail’. Greek gÒmfow reflects PIE word for ‘tooth’, also attested in Skt. jámbha, Slav. *zo˛bъ, Alb. dhëmb. The name of the second fortified city is affiliated with the greek word §x›now 'hedgehog', probably derived from ¶xiw ‘snake’ and related with the names for 'hedgehog' in other IE languages Erm. ozn, Germ. Igel, Lit. ežys, Slav. ježь.
