Summary/Abstract: The media are playing an important role in the process of democratization, the development of democracy and the fight for the rights of people around the world to ensure transparency and accountability in all spheres of public affairs. The media are influencing the process of democratization and are changing the contemporary democracy. In a rapidly changing world, it is evident that this relationship is important in developed and underdeveloped societies. But the relationship between media and democracy is not one-way one-sided, but rather complex and diverse. It is a critical and controversial issue in the contemporary global political context. Despite the rapid spread of democracy at the end of the 20th century, and on global level, it is too early to say that the world has a unitary democratic system and that it shares a democratic political culture. Democratization is subject to the influence of regional and global powers and it is first and foremost a national project. As a national project, the media can contribute to the democratic progress of the Third World, developing countries and transition. This paper seeks to analyze the emergence of a democratic political culture and explore the role of the mass media in the process of democratic progress in developed, underdeveloped and transition countries. In undemocratic societies, the media are controlled by the government, and the messages received by citizens are more appropriate to the authorities. In democratic societies, the media must provide objective, timely and complete information in order to give citizens a real picture or idea of an event or condition that is suitable for identifying and understanding problems for the purpose of public action.
