The 120th Birth Anniversary of the Bukovinian Poet, Writer and Translator Georg Drozdowski (1899–1987)

Summary/Abstract: The following article is an evocation of the literary activity of a known Bukovinian personality, Georg Drozdowski. Born in Chernivtsi, in 1899, he fought in the First and in the Second World War, earned his living working as a bank employee and also writing and acting in theatrical pieces in his home town. His first poems were more of a romantic nature, resembling the style of Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannstahl and Anton Wildgans. He developed friendly relationships with Jewish writers from Bukowina, such as Alfred Kittner, Robert Flinker and Alfred Margul-Sperber. Drozdowski translated into German works of several renowned Romanian poets (Lucian Blaga, Georg Coșbuc, Tudor Arghezi, VasileVoiculescu and Ion Pillat) and was awarded the Lenau-Prize (1957), the Theodor Körner-Prize (1965) and the Gryphius-Prize (1982) for his literary activity and for having been a mediator between the Romanian and German culture.
