Censuses as information source on living conditions in Poland

Summary/Abstract: In the paper delivered on the Scientific Seminar on the 220th anniversary of the first Population Census in Poland (9th march 1789) the author discussed the importance and the role of censuses to cover information needs of researchers. Among many purposes of the censuses carried out in modern history, the Autor admitted these, which decide on the source quality in surveys of population living condition: delineating population structure for demographic and social surveys; possibility to construct sampling frames; updating demographic and social statistics; providing information on population structure by regions; achieving supporting variables for indirect estimation according to the rules of small area statistics. This subject matter was presented in view of the replacement of traditional censuses by the censuses based on administrative data bases.
