On the development of Arabic lexis

Summary/Abstract: Close contact between various languages is a natural phenomenon which leads to the languages mutually exerting and receiving influences. Traces of these influences in languages are viewed differently especially in the dynamics of exchange of vocabulary, which depends on the levels of progress, science and culture of the users of language. In all times the Arabic language has had exchanges with neighbouring languages. Before the rise of Islam, Arabs had contacts with numerous communities, and these contacts resulted in cross-pollinations. Even the language of the Qur’an has words from Greek, Persian, Hindu, Syriac, Abyssinian and Hebrew languages, amongst others. The most dynamic contacts between Arabic and other languages occurred during the conversion of entire communities to Islam. The development of society within the fold of Islam shaped the standardization of Arabic vocabulary in the classical period, while the general progress of the communities conditioned the dynamics in the development of vocabulary. Over time, the vocabulary of literary Arabic has accepted many new words, mostly in the form of Arabized loanwords and translations of foreign words.
