IQBAL’S UNDERSTANDING OF SUNNAH

Summary/Abstract: Muhammad Iqbal in his numerous poems talked very emotionally about Muhammad, p.b.u.h., pointed out his pre-existent dimension, uttered most beautiful praise for his exemplary life (sunnah) and mission, stressed that following the Sunnah is the way by which Muslims would come out of the crisis in which they were, but also that Muslims’ love of the Prophet rounded their being like their blood. However, in his scientific works, as he himself pointed out, due to the widespread apocrypha, late written-hadiths and the opinion that the Prophet’s implementation in practice and life of God’s universal Word, conditioned by specific political, social, economic, educational, geographical and other circumstances. He also pointed out the historical importance of the Sunnah, especially the hadiths of legal nature, what was significant during life of Muhammad p.b.u.h., and his companions, but its relevance to later times and other climes is questionable.
