Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the relation between tendencies in state policies in the sphere of consumption versus the idea of sustainable development. The fact that the states are focused on the policy of consumer protection and at the same time reduce the role of the public sector and the amount of public consumption contributes to the realization of sustainable development aims in a considerably more limited degree and to the reduction of the very idea of sustainable development to make economy more ecological. Furthermore, the omission of the social aspect questions the possibility of realizing the principles of sustainable development.
