Summary/Abstract: One of the solutions to increase the Axis naval presence in the Black Sea employed by the German Naval Staff was to try to get the Italians involved. The idea was to send Italian light craft to support the Axis offensive in the summer of 1942. In early 1942, Admiral Arturo Riccardi, the undersecretary of the Italian Navy was quick to offer his support, under the condition that the Italian Navy would be allowed to chose the ship types to be sent there. For the Black Sea the Italians went withh a flotilla of pocket submarines (C.B. 1-6); a flotilla of M.A.S. torpedoboats (M.A.S. 570-573); a flotilla of smaller M.T.B.s (M.T.S.M. 204, 206, 210 and 2016) and 5 small assault craft, M.T.Ms.
