Summary/Abstract: The present paper aims to provide an insight into the methods and tools of ESP teaching, with specific focus on the approaches that promote learner autonomy. The ESP practitioners could consider the most appropriate approach to take for their students when choosing the syllabus. They can select materials for different purposes to include in their text-based or content-based syllabuses or focus on consciousness-raising approaches or counterbalancing ones which are discussed in the present paper in relation to both learning and acquisition. The referential and social functions of language are also taken into account, as they reflect the ESP practitioners` view of language and learning according to which they can supply students with needs-specific texts and tasks.
