Summary/Abstract: This book presents the volume The Art of Living, of Surviving, of Reviving. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Romance studies at the University of Łódź which was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reactivation of Romance studies at the University of Łódź, carried out today within the Institute of Roman Studies. At the same time, the book celebrates the 10th anniversary of the creation, within the Institute of Romanesque Studies, of the Department of Italian Philology. These anniversaries take place at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, an unprecedented event in the global world of the 21st century, with confinement as a compulsory mode of operation for long weeks, even months. The rupture thus brought about undoubtedly led to a new perception of life and of what ił means to live. For more than one, this thick line that separates our existence before and after Covid-19 constitutes a memento inciting to wonder how to live the pandemic and during the pandemic, how to survive it and if it is possible to (re)live completely when it has corne to an end. These questions launched as the driving theme of the commemorative volume have called for a rich and varied reflection contained in 25 articles, falling within different sub-fields of linguistics.

- No. of Pages:20
- Keywords:medieval French; collocations; intensity; phraseology
- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the intensive comparisons applied to medieval French adjectives with the meaning ‘yellow’ or with closely related meanings. On the basis of the concept of collocation defined by the Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology (Meaning-Text Theory), we study the second terms of these comparisons in successive sections. A first section presents the concept of collocation. The second section is dedicated to the second term of comparison ‘gold’. The third section deals with the term ‘wax’ and the fourth section deals with the term ‘egg yolk’. A fifth section regroups other less frequent second terms of the comparison, such as ‘kite spawn’, ‘oriole feather’ or ‘Spanish broom’. This paper is integrated in the COLINDANTE research project (I+D+i PID2019-104741GB-100, Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain) and is part of a series of works that describe intensive comparisons based on the names of colors in medieval French.

- Page Range:33-43
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:interjection; expression of emotions; subjectivity; semantics; pragmatics
- Summary/Abstract:A particular nature of the interjection is that it refers principally to the emotional dimension of discourse. As a purely expressive phenomenon, it embodies both verbal construction and expression of emotional states in perfect fashion. It can also be related to the enunciative subjectivity. Therefore, in this paper, we attempt to examine the interrelation between emotion and interjection in order to determine the role that this grammatical category plays in a discourse based on the affective component and, more specifically, in the expression of joy. We focus mainly on the functional and pragmatic values of interjections. On the one hand, this approach will allow us to make some remarks on the importance of context in decoding the semantic content of interjections; on the other, it will enable us to reflect on the effects that the use of ejaculatory utterances can produce. Our study is based on the written language corpus derived from the contemporary French comic strips and webcomics published after the year 2000.

À propos des noms d’épidémies
(Regarding the names of the epidemics)
- Author(s):Anna Bochnakowa
- Language:French
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Philology
- Page Range:45-56
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:French-Polish lexicology; epidemic names; etymology
- Summary/Abstract:The article is devoted to the names of epidemics that have affected many countries in Europe and the world over the centuries. After a short historical introduction, French and Polish names will be presented along with the information about their etymology: choléra / cholera, dysenterie / czerwonka, ébola / ebola, fièvre jaune / żółta febra, grippe / grypa, lèpre / trąd, peste / dżuma, rougeole / odra, syphilis / kiła, tuberculose / gruźlica, typhus / tyfus, variole / ospa, SRAS / SARS Covid 19. The names mostly date back to before the nineteenth century, when the causes of diseases began to be scientifically researched and treated. Most French names are book terms of Greek-Latin origin. Half of the Polish names are Slavic. This proves that the ancient Latin medical literature in Poland is less extensive and that folk names are common. The names of contemporary diseases are often abbreviated English names.

- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:art of living; deconstruction; imagination; parody; proverb; rhetorical manipulation; stereotype; surrealism
- Summary/Abstract:Proverbs convey an idealized and conventional art of living that is generally referred to as popular wisdom. Made of stereotypes and pretending to shape our behaviour, this popular wisdom has been strongly contested by the surrealist poets Paul Éluard and Benjamin Péret in their 152 proverbes mis au goût du jour. On the one hand, this article analyzes the rhetorical modalities of this contest. These consist in a parody discourse that distorts traditional proverbs, while preserving their phraseology. On the other hand, this study examines how these parodic manipulations deconstruct the stereotypical art of living conveyed by the proverbial genre through different processes (trivialization, pejoration, contradiction, etc.). It also shows that the work of undermining carried out by Éluard and Péret on proverbs leads to the proclamation of a new art of living based on the poetic liberation of language, the refusal of authority and the reign of imagination.

- Page Range:69-80
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:virus; pandemic; cancer; sociolinguistics; semantics; corpus linguistics
- Summary/Abstract:The coronavirus has promoted the semantic change in the words virus and pandemic. We believe that, increasingly, a metaphorical use of both words is occurring (as happened in the past with cancer). Therefore, in this study, the semantic characteristics of this change are systematized and detailed in the first place. Subsequently, we have designed a corpus with 480 sentences, balanced sociolinguistically to analyze the change quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, it will be reviewed if the change is present in all social groups and if any group promotes it. Qualitatively, it will be found that the meta-phorical use of virus, pandemic and cancer is complementary: each of these words is used in very specific semantic collocations.

- Author(s):Joanna Cholewa
- Language:French
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Foreign languages learning
- Page Range:81-93
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:semantic plurivocity; parallel corpus; vivre; Polish equivalents
- Summary/Abstract:The present paper aims to analyze the semantic plurivocity of the verb vivre in the Parallel Corpus of Literary Texts, composed of French literary documents and their translations into Polish, as well as the heterogeneity of its equivalents in the target language. The semantic richness of vivre is highlighted according to the seventeen uses that the dictionnary Les verbes français offers for this verb. The objective of the analysis is to specify: (a) which of the uses of vivre are statistically the most significant; (b) what verbal or other strategies are used to translate occurrences with different uses of vivre. The analysis highlights four uses of vivre: ‚to be alive’, ‚to reside’, ‚to endure’ and ‚to have such a way of life’. Among their equivalents, there are not only żyć, but also mieszkać, as well as the prefixal derivatives of żyć, whose functioning should be clarified by the dictionaries.

- Language:Spanish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Applied Linguistics
- Page Range:95-109
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:argumentative strategies; persuasion; irony; disability; Covid
- Summary/Abstract:During the pandemic caused by Covid 19, the State of Alarm in Spain shifted the focus of the advertising to the prevention of the health of oneself and others. However, according to the ONCE foundation, disabled people were not taken into account. This is denounced in an video which uses indirect procedures such as metaphorisation, irony and humour. The underlying criticism confronts topoi that in this historical-social moment seem to have changed, at least in terms of the weight given to them by society. This requires the ONCE Foundation to choose its tone so as not to provoke unwanted reactions. A playful framework (gamers) is created to mask or attenuate social and ideological criticism. Emotion is still a fallacy but here it is reinvented to be used as a legitimising argument. The work consists of an argumentative analysis (Anscombre-Ducrot 1983) of multimodal discourse following a methodology of Pragmatic Linguistics (Fuentes Rodríguez 2017 [2000]).

- Keywords:argot des poilus (French WW1 soldiers slang); figures of speech; cathartic func¬tion of language; Great War (1914-1918); trenches
- Summary/Abstract:For the soldiers of the Great War (1914-1918) all means are good to protect themselves from the everyday reality of the trenches and to survive, to live. Anything that can bring some kind of catharsis is used, among other things through the language. We therefore find in the “argot des poilus” (French WW1 soldiers slang) terms and expressions, which are the result of all slangs essential functions like those based on the connivance and the playfulness, but also on the cathartic function of language. This allows the externalization of the trauma experienced, that is often the case in times of war. A significant number of figures, mainly metaphorical, especially euphemism and hyperbole, appears then in the speech. This article analyzes the cathartic use of some lexemes and phrases that are found in the speech of the soldiers of the Great War.

- Keywords:French philology; lexical enrichment; dictionaries; informal learning
- Summary/Abstract:Our research focuses on enriching the lexical repertoire of French philology students during the COVID-19 lockdown (March 2020 – May 2021). We answer two questions: 1) what are the dictionary resources of French philology students? 2) What are other sources of their lexical enrichment? In the conclusions, we predict the waning of spontaneous use of paper dictionaries and the growth of informal vocabulary-learning in students’ learning trajectories.

- No. of Pages:14
- Keywords:COVID-19; lexicon; pandemic; crisis; neology; lexical creativity; loanwords
- Summary/Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic, with its medical, economic and social implications, provides a unique opportunity to investigate the endless creativity it gave rise to in all areas, including language, showing just how society can cope with a crisis situation unprecedented in its duration and seriousness. The analysis carried out in this paper shows what lexical resources French provided to put into words a situation which utterly transformed behaviour and social norms. Certain typical keywords have been selected for analysis from the latest edition of a general language reference dictionary, Le Petit Larousse illustré 2022, including neologisms of meaning (confinement), neologisms of form (quatorzaine), direct or indirect loans and equivalents proposed (COVID-19, distanciation sociale…). There are no playful occasionalisms to speak of in the dictionary corpus. The impact of the crisis situation on the reception of loanwords from English is also evaluated.

- Language:Italian
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Foreign languages learning
- Page Range:145-154
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:transcreation; advertisement; marketing; international campaigns; translation studies
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the phenomenon of transcreation, a translation method used in the advertising industry as one of the stages in the development of an international advertising campaign. Transcreation is halfway between translation and the creation process from scratch, so it seems like a perfect solution to revive the original message in one new version. It is based on the adaptation of the original intent of the advertisement in order to obtain an equivalent reaction from the relevant public, taking into account the socio-cultural differences and nuances, linguistic peculiarities and habits of consumption of the target market. It stays true to the meaning of the original text, always trying to find creative ways to produce an authentic and compelling message to recipients that represent a different culture from that of the country of origin.

- Language:French
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:155-165
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:art of living; Book of Proverbs; priamel; proverb; semantic analysis
- Summary/Abstract:Novitas is emphasized in biblical priamels from the Book of Proverbs both from the point of view of subject matter and their linguistic form. The validity of their subject matter stems from the fact that they belong to wisdom literature, which, according to the intentions of their authors, was supposed to the canon of conduct for the whole society. The researched proverbs depict the art of life being of potential interest to the recipient from the 21st century. Despite being marked by the realities from a different epoch, these sentences are still attractive content-wise. Next to individual references to the force majeure we find in priamels still valid comments on the human nature as well as timeless philosophy of life based on moderation, especially useful in the epoch of predominating consumerism. Explicit moral norms precisely define first and foremost types of behaviour and attitudes which we should avoid as well as those which are welcome.

- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:Italian language; Italian press; Covid-19
- Summary/Abstract:This article aims to present how the COVID-19 has influenced the current texts of the Italian press. We pay attention to the vocabulary relating to the pandemic in the most characteristic linguistic phenomena of the Italian language. We support the theoretical questions with examples taken from Italian newspapers (current articles). The goal of our work is to characterize la vivacità espositiva, the captivating titles, their nominalization, the phraseological verbs, the direct speech, cleft sentence, il c’è presentativo, la dislocazione a sinistra, whose purpose is mainly to simplify the language of the press and to make the text more attractive. The presence of neologisms, plasticisms, acronyms, and war metaphors are particularly characteristic of the press language during the pandemic. The language of the press occupies a special place among the sectoral languages, currently undergoing changes also due to the world situation during the pandemic.

- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Philology
- Page Range:179-193
- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:Figurative language; Metaphor; Journey methaphor; pandemic; Italian
- Summary/Abstract:Among the linguistic outcomes of the pandemic are the discourse strategies applied by speakers belonging to different sociolinguistic groups in different communicative contexts. In particular, the study highlights the widespread use in Italian of a densely figurative language, aimed at representing in an effective and cognitively manageable way the dramatic novelty of the phenomenon and the exceptionality of proposed measures (typically, on the part of institutions, politicians and the press), and at expressing the unique and emotionally charged nature of the new experience (typically, on the part of the ordinary speaker). Among different possible source domains, the study focuses on that of the journey, which appears to have been overlooked in the literature, though it constitutes, cross-linguistically, a fundamental resource for the representation of several aspects of human experience.

- Keywords:COVID-19; communication; motivation; blended learning; teaching French as a foreign language
- Summary/Abstract:The pandemic has brought about a radical change in the educational situation at all levels, to which both teachers and students have had to adapt abruptly. The emotional burden of this situation has been added to all the material and communicative difficulties that have resulted from the states of alarm occurred in all countries worldwide. Thus, the affective factors that are normally involved in the teaching / learning process, which the CEFRL considers under “existential competence”, have been particularly evident in this difficult period in which fear, uncertainty and isolation have been present in all the activities. In this context, the change from face-to-face teaching to blended learning has had a negative influence on the motivation not only of the students but also of the teaching staff. In this article we present the experience in teaching of French as a foreign language of a year in which classroom communication between teacher and student was suddenly and unexpectedly disrupted.

- Keywords:event; proper name of event; discourse; media; euphemization; dysphemization; point of view
- Summary/Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has created a situation of bifurcation within societies:we are talking about a world before and after the coronavirus. The name of the city ofWuhan, its “cradle”, has become a fatal symbol. This contribution examines the discursivefunctioning of proper names referring to events of this type (Wuhan, Chernobyl, 9/11) and how they meet certain needs of speakers at times of “rupture”. We speak about themas about proper denominations (Bosredon and Tamba 1995), words-events (Moirand 2007) orproper names referring to events (Krieg-Planque 2009) because they cover both some typicalfeatures of common names and proper names. We first ask about the activity of nominationthrough the designations used, often concurrent, and on their functioning in their relationto the co(n)text, but also to previous discourses (Moirand and Reboul-Touré 2015). Toname something from an enunciative point of view is to select a designation among othersavailable, and this with an essentially intentional aim. This is what we focus on in a secondstep, by identifying the role of the proper names of events in argumentative euphemizationand dysphemization, through the analysis of a few examples from our corpus.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:Philippe Delerm; La première gorgée de bière; cuisine; Polish translation
- Summary/Abstract:Philippe Delerm’s book La première gorgée de bière et autres plaisirs minuscules (1997) consists of thirty-four mini-stories that form an inventory of small joys, of everyday moments that seem to be tiny, fleeting celebrations. Some of these stories are related to the pleasures of the table (food and table habits or routines). This study presents the book’s “culinary scenes” and the way they are rendered in the Polish translation (Pierwszy łyk piwa, 2004). The aim of this comparison is to see whether the translation makes it possible for the Polish audience to feel the connivance or complicity inscribed in Delerm’s text re¬garding food, and to evaluate to what extent reading Pierwszy łyk piwa can be part of the art of “surviving” (serving as an escape) in difficult moments such as the 2020 pandemic, a global experience that has upset our daily lives.

- Summary/Abstract:The main objective of the article is to present the results of some research – carried out with students of French philology in Poland – on their representations regarding to the French language. Some of the aspects will be subjected to a detailed analysis: the feelings that French evokes, its social status, the difficulties identified by the students as the most salient in French learning. All the images, woven by future philologists in their individual productions (and therefore subjective par excellence), allow us to reconstruct the semantic fields specific to the French language.

Ourobjective is to follow the terminological and conceptual evolution of the term to arrive ata pedagogical profile of relational mediation that we could then set up in the classroom toensure genuine language teaching. This analysis stems from the interest attributed to therelational factor following the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has clearly shown thegreat importance of these questions for educational success.

- Keywords:argot; gastronomic language; language of trades; slang themes
- Summary/Abstract:Speakers of non-standard varieties of French also like to eat and have their own words for food. But can gastronomy be considered as a major theme in slang? This paper tries to answer this question by analysing argot and unconventional French dictionaries (Colin et al. 2006, Goudaillier 2001, Tengour 2013, Perret 2002) and works by specialists such as Calvet and Robert L’Argenton. Slang varieties dealt with range from traditional French slang to contemporary suburban slang (français contemporain des cités) and include butchers’ slang (louchébem) and bakers’ jargon. The conclusion also suggests some ideas on teaching French as a foreign language.

The descriptive contrastive dimension of the analysis (ACD) is proposed with reference to the Italian-Polish context and with regard to the different language solutions (semantic, semiotic and structural) such as: resemantization, types of loanwords (adapted and not adapted, semantic casts and structural casts), medical technicalities, vocabulary of politicians and others government institutions. Referring to some theories, implemented in today’s circumstances, such as the linguistic relativism of Benjamin Lee Whorf (1950 : 52-55) and the observations of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1953), current article current article also reflects the application of Aristotle’s considerations concretized in Rhetoric (330 BCE).

- Summary/Abstract:In recent decades, we have witnessed an increase in the number of research related to the verbal expressions of sensory perceptions in different languages. These are often semantic and syntactic analyzes of predicates within the framework of a sentence. The present study provides an introduction to the contrastive analysis of Polish and French verbs of auditory perception, taking into account the link with the intellectual activity of the perceiving subject and the communication situation. The semantic description of verbs is divided according to cognitive criteria into verbs of passive perception (słyszeć - entendre) and active (słuchać - écouter) and restricted to the category of the object of perception which is the human voice. The contrastive analysis shows the different prefixes as well as perfective and imperfective verb forms in Polish that are able to express aspectual and modal nuances, which is lacking in French. In the translated texts, they are expressed by adverbs or other verbs. The polysemy of verbs is linked to intellectual activity and the position of the perceiving subject in relation to the speaker. Thus the ‘understand’ component appears for passive hearing verbs; for verbs of active hearing the polysemy is generated on the cause-consequence relation: ‘obey’ when the perceiver is in a position of inferiority, ‘fulfil’ when he is in a position of superiority.

The image of the competent translator is constantly changing. In the near future, he will be more and more confronted with new technologies which aim at the partial or even total replacement of his services by an automatic translation. At the moment the MT results are not completely satisfactory, but they are constantly improving. In this article the author first presents the evolution of translators’ competences to raise the question of the different professions of translation which require various skills and abilities. The second issue discussed concerns the influence of the pandemic on the training methods of future professionals and the possibility to benefit from these experiences.

- Summary/Abstract:There are different ways of translating popular songs or pop music. They can be translated for a volume that collects lyrics only to be read, to understand the meaning of the song’s message. If the song must be translated to be sung, for the performance, and you do not want to change the music, the only way to go is that of adaptation, in the appropriate choice of rhyming words that must adapt to the musical, mask (Low 2008). Our thesis, supported by three original case studies whose results we will study in the transition from a foreign language to Italian, is that this adaptation can coincide with what is now called transcreation.
