Summary/Abstract: This collection is the result of a conference on ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Traps of the City‘ held in November 2021. The department of Ethnology and the ‘Center for the Study of Intangible Cultural Heritage‘ established under it were the organizers and hosts of this scientific forum. The Ethnology discipline at the ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ University of Plovdiv has a 30-year history, which is also associated with the development of specific research fields and the formation of the Plovdiv school in ethnology. The issues of the conference are based on the research tasks set by the specialists from the department of Ethnology during their work as a team in the national scientific program ‘Cultural-historical heritage, national memory and social development‘.The conference themed ‘Intangible cultural heritage: the traps of the city‘ was inspired by the specifics of a particular Plovdiv neighborhood called ‘Kapana‘ (‘The Trap’). Historically, it was the economic and commercial center of the city as an artisan quarter. ‘Kapana’ got its name because of the numerous shopping and craft streets where it was easy to get lost, but also to find unexpected spaces and people. It is a dynamic space that has gone through many transformations. As a result of local policies, Kapana is currently being developed as a district for creative industries. It is also transformed into a place where various contemporary forms of art and urban culture unfold, as well as a scene of various festivals and events. The theme of the conference points to a rethinking of the ‘traps‘ and directing the research gaze to these urban spaces, which on the one hand inherit historical and cultural layers, but on the other hand are also places of living legacies. The papers presented various theoretical, field and practical results of urban heritage research. The wealth of approaches and analyzes to urban heritage and memory also led to the thematic diversity of this collection.

- Summary/Abstract:The article analyzes sensory images of three urban places that are constructed in the interviews and memories of a craftsman A.K. - bearer of the intangible cultural heritage, who is a representative of the Armenian community in Plovdiv, held in 1999 – 2000. The approach of sensory anthropology was used. A sensory landscape of Plovdiv is outlined, in which “Kapana”, the Old Town and the Tobacco Town are connected by the memories of the smell of tobacco, the sounds of metal and cobblestones. Sensory memories underpin narratives of the Armenian community connected to these places through their crafts, as industrialists important to the city, and as individuals. Relationships of closeness are observed that existed until the middle of the 20th century and the memories of these relationships are expressed through the memories of the “of closeness”. The changes in social, political and economic relations lead to the gradual change in the ways of constructing the collective memory of the places in Plovdiv. The three topos are becoming more and more touristic places and the connections with the place are becoming more distant as the main senses constructing the sensory landscape with modernity are sight, taste and sounds. From places of everyday life, especially after the project “Plovdiv 2019 – European Capital of Culture”, Kapana and the Tobacco City are turning into cultural scenes, places of consumption and creativity and festival topos.

- Summary/Abstract:This text offers two “snapshots” of Plovdiv's Kapana district, read through the senses, with a focus on the soundscape and visual perceptions. One concerns the time from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, and the other - the 80s of the 20th century. Both written sources of different nature and memories (including visual, i.e. photographs) were used. A conclusion is drawn that the place fulfills the main functions of a public space in both considered periods and an interest in continuing the research through the prism of intersensitivity is put forward.

- Summary/Abstract:Cultural entrepreneurship is a topic that is evoking more and more interdisciplinary and polyparadigmatic efforts. The introduction and spread of the concept of “creative industries”, the awareness of the need to update both policies and management in the sphere of culture, the increasingly clearly visible need to preserve and socialize movable and immovable cultural heritage through a complex of traditional and modern methods: all these are factors that provoke more research and analysis of problems from the sphere of culture and arts.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper traces the imprint in the archaeological monuments and in the written sources of three phenomena emblematic of the city of Sofia in its almost 20-century history. First are the mineral springs, which are one of the main reasons for the formation of the settlement in this place. The close proximity of the Vitosha mountain, which is a major resource center – of water, timber, fruit, a place to walk and relax – also contributes to a good living environment. The strength and stability of the Christian tradition is evidenced by the church dedicated to God’s wisdom built in Late Antiquity and which has survived to this day – the domed basilica “Saint Sophia”, which also gave the current name of the present-day Bulgarian capital.

- Summary/Abstract:The issue of Plovdiv churches during the Ottoman period is very interesting and a debatable one in historiography. The article draws attention to the identification of the church “St. Paraskeva/Petka”, around which there are the most problems. In order to identify this very important church in Plovdiv during the Ottoman period, the reports of various European travelers who passed through Plovdiv (in ottoman “Filibe”) are mainly used. These are the only sources, inasmuch as domestic sources, both Bulgarian and Greek, are missing. Some revival legends are also being investigated, according to which the location of the church “St. Paraskeva/Petka” is under the Dzhumaya mosque in Plovdiv. The issue of the presence of a church building under the Dzhumaya mosque (XV century) is considered. The improvisations on the topic of “turning a mosque into a church” and building mosques according to the plan of a church (sic!) are categorically refuted, as well as the ideas of embedding Christ's monograms (chrisms) on the walls of the mosque. Information obtained during the last major renovation of the mosque, when archaeological research was also carried out, is used. Opinions are expressed that the legends about the conversion of the eventual church “St. Paraskeva/Petka” in a mosque arise based on the name of Dzhumaya mosque – “Friday” mosque.

- Summary/Abstract:The text focuses on the advertising materials printed in the post-liberation press of Plovdiv, bringing out the connection with the advertisements from the revival press in an attempt to trace the changes and trends in the formation of advertising messages and the identification of some specific groups of customers. The advertisements published in the “Plovdiv” newspaper, published in the period 1886 – 1907, were analyzed, divided into two large groups: advertisements of goods and advertisements of services. Some features of the function of advertising among the Plovdiv population are brought out, as well as the forms of construction of advertising materials and messages, characteristic of the post-liberation press. An attempt has also been made to reconstruct the mosaic picture of the world of Plovdiv residents from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, assembled from individual newspaper materials advertising goods and services.

- Page Range:142-166
- No. of Pages:25
- Keywords:the thing that has a past; intangible cultural heritage; body; unconscious; inheritance
- Summary/Abstract:The text examines the changes caused by the pandemic of intangible cultural heritage through four prisms: the body, the past (which is inherited), the mask and the space. Their variable parameters explicated by the pandemic, their theoretical and practical phenomenology are examined. Through them, three spheres of the intangible cultural heritage are considered: creating a song, dance (horo), singing in a choir and an ensemble. Based on them, theoretical reflections are carried out, reaching the conclusion that the body becomes an image of itself (recorded, watched and listened to), being isolated and displaced in the newly created pandemic culture. From this: the “body” placed in this process “grafts” the psychic into the new culture. This makes everyday life dramatic and tragic, because every day is formally a collision if the body does not have the necessary “attributes”. This - the article muses, using different analytical angles to look at these “rubbing against each other” phenomena - leads to the unconscious desire to disembody or (re)turn the body into a desired image from the past(s).

- Page Range:167-187
- No. of Pages:21
- Keywords:narrative; narration; urban culture; intangible cultural heritage
- Summary/Abstract:The text provides a brief overview of the system of rules, laws, documents and institutions related to intangible cultural heritage in Bulgaria, looking for the place of oral traditions and forms of expression in them. Unlike traditional storytelling, which has a major role in folklore, modern ways of expression, carried out in an urban environment, hardly present their representative samples as elements of cultural heritage. The aim of the paper is to propose narratives as contemporary forms of storytelling in cities, to present their role in the cultural expression of urban communities and their participation in the formation of urban identity and cultural diversity. The recognition of urban narratives as a possible element of intangible cultural heritage will draw attention to their importance in the preservation and transmission of urban memory and traditions to the next generations.

- Summary/Abstract:The research aims to understand the specifics of craft beer in the context of urban craft. In the last decade, the production and consumption of the so-called “craft beers” are gaining popularity in Bulgaria. This new phenomenon is also associated with the imposition of a specific culture of consumption and production ethics, which are defined as craft beer culture. This emerging culture of production and consumption is characterized by the imposition of a new business model that is based on shared knowledge, close relationships between brewers, mutual sharing of experience and often joint projects. Another specificity is the development of market relationships, in which consumer-user relationships are shortened and become more and more immediate. The industry is based on traditional knowledge and innovation, as well as close producer-consumer relationships. The paper will trace the development of craft beer culture in Bulgaria.
