Keywords: local Transylvanian communities; globalization; digitalization; small worlds;
Summary/Abstract: The present volume comprises studies carried out within the Communities and Networks research project funded by the Institute of Research Programmes of Sapientia Foundation. Running in the period of 2019─2021, the project included numerous field researches, qualitative and quantitative analyses presented in conferences and workshops, in which the participants of the research project and the invited speakers offered various perspectives on local Transylvanian communities in the context of the changes and trends that define the era of globalization and digitalization. Each of the eight studies published in the volume approaches the topic of small worlds in a global context either as essays or as empirical studies. Local situations are either framed in a global explanatory context or correlated with good practices and international experiences, outlining scenarios for the future.

(ECOVILLAGES: ARE THEY SOLUTIONS OR SYMPTOMS OF CRISIS?)
- Author(s):Dénes Tamás
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Cultural Anthropology / Ethnology, Human Ecology
- Page Range:17-26
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:ecovillage; climate crisis; globalization;
- Summary/Abstract:The idea of crisis has already become part of the discourse regarding modernity since the second half of the 19th Century. This idea of crisis passes trough the entire 20th century, taking on various forms. The appearance of ecovillages is usually related to the perception of climate crisis, and indeed, ecovillages can also be seen as a response experiment to the negative effects of globalization. The present study overviews the solutions proposed to this crisis by ecovillages. The question is how we should look at these: as solutions or as symptoms of the crisis?

- Summary/Abstract:The discourses of the “Szekler Ecovillage” Facebook group are dominated by two main topics: we can see the themes of tradition and innovation unfolding in the search for solutions to the present global crises. Investigating the public communication of the group, it can be stated that the emphasis is on preserving, rediscovering, reviving and relaunching tradition. However, the issue of innovation is also significant. This study examines how the texts of the two orientations appear in group communication.

(LARGE CARNIVORES IN MASS MEDIA. CONTENT ANALYSIS)
- Author(s):Andrea Sólyom
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Media studies, Human Ecology, Environmental interactions
- Page Range:51-93
- No. of Pages:43
- Keywords:large carnivores; bear danger; human─animal conflict;
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the analysis is to outline the conflicts between people and large carnivores, respectively about the latter’s social perception. The author realized a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of articles about bears, published in a regional Hungarian and a national Romanian newspaper in the period of June–November 2019. In addition, she completed the work with the study of posts published on two social media(Facebook) platforms – in a group of property owners in a settlement frequented by bears and on a personal profile of a conservationist. The analysis shows that the conflicts are unilaterally approached, from an anti-bear viewpoint in the majority of the cases, the perceived primary source of conflict being the overpopulation of the bears. The topic is very popular on its own, however it is also overstimulated by tabloid-style photos and titles. There is a high demand of the collaboration of experts, ecologists, scientists and journalists with a more active presence of the former ones in media and social media in order to deconstruct the myths, disinformation and for a more balanced information.

- Summary/Abstract:The Szeklerland region of Romania – Covasna, Harghita, and to some extent Mureş counties – is one of the poorest in the country. There are towns that are referred to in the common slang as “thrift towns”. The flourishing of second-hand retail can be linked, obviously, to the lower income of the citizens, however other motivations, e.g., sustainability, consumer ethics, and issues of availability (e.g. other types of shops) can also be suspected to impact second-hand shopping. The purpose of the present online survey was to investigate which are the major motivations of shopping for second-hand clothes and how such practice is structured among the respondents. An online survey strategy was employed among Hungarian ethnicities from the above-mentioned counties, and the data suggest that austerity is an important explanation of second-hand shopping: respondents usually spend little money in second-hand shops and are motivated by a good price/quality ratio. The lower price of the second-hand products allows them to acquire a lot of products, so second-hand shopping helps accumulate a lot of products. On the other hand, there are some rising motivations in accordance with the actual discourse of second-hand shopping: the possibility of recycling and hedonistic motivations like treasure hunting, and searching for unique items are also involved in structuring this consumption practice.

- Author(s):Rozália Klára Bakó

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:repair community; environmental awareness; digital device usage; electrical and electronic waste; ecodesign; green thinking;
- Summary/Abstract:Our research brief is aimed at connecting two areas that are still separated both in our minds, and in many decision-maker approaches: environmental awareness and digital device usage. We summarized three research projects focusing on regional, European Union regulations, and mapping ways of implementing the circular economy of ICTs on both on organizational and individual level. It is difficult to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic waste unless strict regulations are implemented. The lifespan of digital devices can be prolonged only if users benefit from their right to repair. Do they even have such aright? Theoretically they do, practically they do not. When ecodesign principles will be implemented from 2022, digitalization and green thinking may go hand in hand in Europe.

- Keywords:tourism services; Szeklerland; pandemic; Transylvanian tourism;
- Summary/Abstract:Tourism is one of the economic sectors most affected by the pandemic. This is true also for the Romanian, Transylvanian tourism sector, most of its actors being unprepared for the lockdowns beginning in March 2020. The ensuing crisis required tourism businesses to adopt strategies for survival. This research focuses on the ways in which online communication practices of Transylvanian tourism businesses have been changed during the state of emergency and then after the easing of lockdown. During the analysis of online content and through interviews conducted with different actors from the tourism industry, I identified four behavioural models that characterized the communication and PR activities of the analysed subjects. The research was greatly aided by another similar research conducted one year before, which focused on the degree of digitalization of tourism services.

- Author(s):Orsolya Gergely
- Language:Hungarian
- Subject(s):Gender Studies
- Page Range:147-167
- No. of Pages:21
- Keywords:female scientists; Transylvania; academic sphere;
- Summary/Abstract:During the last decades, there can be observed a growing trend regarding the proportion of female students in higher education and also more and more female academics are entering the scientific fields. Nonetheless, research shows that for women, the academic sphere remains quite “masculine”, hiding many manifest and latent barriers for women. To what extent do perceive these overt or covert barriers those female academics, who are successful in the academic sphere? To what extent their career narratives do reflect on this issue? The present analysis seeks to answer this questions based on a secondary analysis of the interviews published in the 2021 series of Women in Science of the Nőileg Transylvanian Women’s Magazine. How do the twelve Transylvanian-born interviewees see the opportunities and pitfalls of academic success and has being a women and having children hindered their careers? These are the questions which are analysed.

- Summary/Abstract:The concept of meme was introduced to the public consciousness in1986 by Richard Dawkins. Perhaps he himself did not think how much brainstorming and controversy this concept would generate, or that it would now create a separate field of research. Nowadays, thanks to advances in technology, the world has accelerated considerably: we travel faster, we communicate faster — as our messages reach the recipient almost immediately — and because of this, perhaps every new generation thinks faster than the previous one. This development is exponentially true for memes. Relying on the literature, in my study I distinguish between classical and digital memes and examine their presence and effects in the society in an overview-like way. After reviewing the two categories, I will illustrate the issue with several examples for each category. In line with Dawkins’s theory, I interpret culturally rooted phenomena that are, by definition, memes: e.g. handshake, clothing fashion and commercials. In the case of digital meme, analysis of StarTrek and “Trollfoci” memes makes interpretation possible.
