Summary/Abstract: Underscoring the great significance of the research of the remarkable work of enlightenment by the founders of Slavic writing and literature, the Praesidium of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences submitted a suggestion with the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Bulgaria to set up a special Cyril and Methodius Research Centre with the Academy. The Bureau of the Council of Ministers (by virtue of decree No7 of 11th February 1980) decided to establish it on 1st March 1980. “The Cyril and Methodius Research Centre with the Praesidium of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a research organization, a juridical person, seated in Sofia and the purposes of its activities is the following: research work, popularization and propaganda work in Bulgaria and abroad and also the coordination of research work, related to the activities of Cyril and Methodius.” The establishment of a special Cyril and Methodius Research Centre does not mean a unification of the institutes and centres dealing with Cyril and Methodius studies, but only a coordination of their activities. The centre will carry out its own independent research. The coordination will be achieved in accordance with the principles of work adopted by the Academy and will affect also centres that are not in it. In point of fact, this will be attained by a Research-Coordination Council, to be formed by representatives of all scientific organizations (institution, departments and commissions) within whose scope fall studies on the Cyril and Methodius problems. The Cyril and Methodius Research Centre will be in contact also with institutions and scholars abroad, working in the sphere of Cyril and Methodius studies. Here the question is not only to give help to research activities, but also of a close co-operation in working out research problems, the solution of tasks in common and of scientific papers. The centre will arrange meetings and symposia to be attended by foreign experts too, and will assist the participation of Bulgarian scholars in congresses and conferences abroad.

Summary/Abstract:The well-known “Thessaloniki Legend”, which was written in the 11th–12th centuries or in the 14th century, is the subject of the study. This is one of the most interesting works of Bulgarian Medieval literature. The attention centers on two of its copies: the copy of a manuscript of the 16th century, filed under No 52 (39) in Nikolać Monastery near Bielo Polé in Montenegro (the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) and the well-known Kriva Palanka copy, presently of an unknown location. The text of the copy from Nikolać Monastery (with variants of all the other known copies) and an unknown copy of the Kriva Palanka copy, done in 1886 by G. Angelov and kept at the Scientific Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia (fund 141, archive unit 335) are analysed and published for the first time. Three photographs of the copy in Nikolać Monastery and four photographs of copies made in 19th century, are applied.

Summary/Abstract:The aim of the author is to demonstrate the significance of “The Announcement of the Gospel” for the Bulgarian and All-Slav cultures. The properties of this work were observed as early as 1858 when it was found, but the incorrect solution of the problem about its authorship rendered difficult the revelation of its cultural, historical and aesthetic values. The basic problems are three: about the authorship of ‘The Annuoncement of the Gospel’, its position in the context of the time of the epoch and its ideological problems. Discerning a work of Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher in “The Announcement of the Gospel”, the author cites additional evidence in favour of the thesis upheld by the majority of modern researchers in this respect: attention is drawn to the similarity between the lyrical character in the poem and the characteristic of the enlighteners of Slavadom, evidence in works dedicated to his life and activities. Dating “The Announcement of the Gospel” to the Early Middle Ages, the author links its appearance to the formation of European nationalities, to the transition of the Slav peoples from paganism to Christianity, etc. Most of the attention focused on it deals with the idea about the announcement in connection with the philosophical viewpoints of Constantine-Cyril, which point to the hierarchial system of the world and man’s place in it, and to the Christianized Neoplatonism of the Pseudo-Dionysius Areopagitus. In the opinion of the author, “The Announcement of the Gospel” by its ideological purposefulness and emotional entity constitutes an apotheosis of Slav speech, literature and books, whose appearance Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher enthusiastically proclaims, addressing not individual Slav peoples, but the whole of the Slav world – the Slav macroethnos. Thus, in the Early Middle Ages he marked in an imposing poetical manner in the language of the Bulgarian Slavs – the Old Bulgarian, the appearance of a new culture which in analogy with those of the Greek and Latin languages should be called a Slav language culture. Making a broader assessment of “The Announcement of the Gospel”, the author perceives in it an expression of the self-determination and recognition of the Slav ethnos, having stated in a strong voice its existence to Medieval Europe in the second half of the 9th century. Although it appeared in the Byzantine Empire and was close to its cultural traditions, “The Announcement of the Gospel” by Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher possesses the merits of the first unprecedented poetical work of this country's literature, a literature Bulgarian and All-Slav and marks the beginnings of an original cultural and literary tradition with promising prospects.

Summary/Abstract:After an analysis of the verses “Now also the Slav tribe is flying towards baptism, all those who wished to be called your people are converted”, the viewpoint is presented that the “Alphabetical Prayer” has been written in the 50’s or the 60’s of the 9th century in connection with the christening of the Slavs. Christenings, carried out at that time (of the Slavs along the River Bregalnitsa, the Morava Slavs, the “Rossis”; the official christening of Bulgaria by Prince Boris in 865–866 A. D.) are described and arguments are cited in favour of the assumption that the “Alphabetical Prayer” has been written by Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher during the period when Bulgaria adopted Christianity.

Summary/Abstract:Quotations from the Apostle-Book in the “Homily against the Bogomils’ by Presbyter Kosma serve as a basis to draw significant conclusions on the editors” work of the initial Ciril and Methodius translation, carried out in Preslav in the 10th century during Tsar Symeon’s reign (893–927) and that of his successor Tsar Peter (927–969). Presbyter Kosma uses quotations from the second version of the Apostle-Book. Hence, it existed a long time before the “Homily against the Bogomils” was written. The lexical unity of the above-mentioned second version with a number of Preslav literary monuments of the Golden Age of the Old-Bulgarian literature indicates that it originates at the same time. Probably, the second version has been done in Preslav when the „Apostle-Book with Interpretations” was compiled. The text of the latter does not fully and everywhere substitute the liturgical Apostle-Book.

Summary/Abstract:In connection with a copy of “Encomium of Prophet Elijah” so far unknown (found in manuscript No 4204 of the Collection of Manuscripts at the University Library of the town of Cluj, the Socialist Republic of Romania, written during the 16th century in Moldova, in Middle Bulgarian language), the textological problems related to this sermon of Clement, are raised for a comprehensive reassessment. The history of its text is outlined on the basis of the analysis of the newly found copy, the copy of the Ochrida, German and Jagič manuscripts, four Russian copies which appeared in the 12th century to the 15th century period, a Serbian copy of the 16th century and all data on the rest of the copy of this work, known to science so far. It is established that at present we do not have available the author’s text of the work and we do not know a single copy that contains a homogeneous author’s version. The text known to us is actually a new version which appeared at the turn of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century as a result of the mechanical combination of two other versions, carried out by priest Theodor, the copyist of the Ochrida manuscript. However, in this version the features of the two texts, used by priest Theodor are rendered with adequate precision. Therefore, in this sense we may consider that the traits of Clement's original are correctly presented in the Ochrida manuscript as far as the greater part of the text is concerned, copied from the protograph, which stands out with a greater similarity to the initial text of Clement and has an archaic language. The copy of the German manuscript stands closest to the Ochrida copy, which indisputably is the archetype of all copies. Then follows the Cluj copy, while the most distant is the copy in the Jagič manuscript. The textological analysis of the “Encomium of Prophet Elijah” makes it possible to draw several conclusions on a number of questions related to the text of Clement's panegeric works in general: the questions that deal with the history of the text as a sine qua non condition so as to reach the possibly most secure conclusions as to the author's text of Clement's sermons; as to the versions of the sermons and Clement's participation in the development of various versions; as to the significance of the chronology of the copies when defining their relationship to the author's text; as to the importance of the copies made outside of the Bulgarian literary centres when determining the text closest to the original; as to the principles in the choice of the basic text and as to the criteria in the selection of the variants that have to be applied in the preparation of a critical edition of Clement's panegyric sermons.

Summary/Abstract:The excellent artistic mastery of Clement of Ochrida is shown through an analysis of biblical quotations and references in the “Encomium of Cyril”. He is an experienced interpreter, possessing a wealth of culture. The analysis is directed into several aspects: (1) Thematic Key; (2) Fearlessness in Bearing Witness; (3) Shining like the Sun; (4) Shepherd of the Slav People; (5) Thirst for Reason; and (6) the Triple Formula. It is pointed out in conclusion that the “Encomium of Cyril” was a marvelous apologetic work, one of the most perfect works of the Old Bulgarian literature where Clement of Ochrida through the eulogy of the feats of Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher defended in an ideologically substantiated manner the ecclesiastical independence of the First Bulgarian State.

Summary/Abstract:The paper examines a manuscript of the 17th century, rendered in modern punctuation and in a normalized presentation. The manuscript includes “wise sayings” by Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher. Some of these sayings comprise reasonings and moral judgements, probably of the time of the Earliest Slav Teacher. The study indicates considerable similarities in the “wise sayings” to be quoted by Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher and found in manuscript No. 1161 at the Ecclesiastical Historical-Archaeological Institute in Sofia. The publication aims at new archaeographic research, above all in libraries in the Soviet Union and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Summary/Abstract:Eleven Bulgarian copies of sermons by Clement of Ochrida are examined in the paper. Two of them are works by Clement (“A Homily for the Resurrection of Lazar” and “Instruction on Ascension Day”) and nine could possibly be his likewise (“Instruction on Palm Sunday”, “Instruction on the Holy Secrets”, “Lesson on Pentacost” and the wellknown “Clement's Holy Lent Cycle”, which embraces six sermons). On the basis of paleographic features and water marks, the manuscript may be referred to the middle of the 17th century. It is kept in the “Elenka and Kiril Avramovi” Reading Club in the town of Svishtov under No 145a. The textological analysis of the newly-found copies indicates that they are Bulgarian both in language and orthography and also by their original, i. e. they are derived from another older Bulgarian manuscript. It is obvious from the closeness and even the complete coincidence of the text in the separate sermons with the earliest initial versions that they represent a continuation of the ancient manuscript tradition. To this evidence is also borne by the content of the manuscript, its part dealing with Lent Sunday to Pentacost in particular, which resembles the earliest copies of the “Zlatoust”. The newly-found copies of sermons by Clement of Ochrida widen the scope of and supplement the ideas about the spread of his literary works.

Summary/Abstract:In reviewing the “Encomium of Cyril” the main attention focuses on the composition and the interpretation, i. e. the deciphering of its medieval literary code. The analysis is diachronycally achieved – in relation to the antique traditions of the genre and to the earlier Christian models, and also synchronically – in a comparison with similar genres in the literature of the Middle Ages, lifes in particular. General questions of medieval aesthetics are dealt with and the methodological foundations for the study of medieval works of art are determined. Likewise, the tangible ideological basis of the “Encomium of Cyril” is analyzed, which refers to the well-known Cyril-Methodius Ideology (term, suggested by R. Picchio), embracing the works by the earliest Slav teachers and their pupils and followers during the period of the first flourishing of the Old-Bulgarian literature during the 9th-10th centuries. The analysis of the encomium text sticks to its composition and deals with both literary and rhetorical particularities, as well as theological and ideological questions. On the one hand, the internal structural relationships of the work are examined, and on the other, the genetical and typological interrelationships with similar works in the Byzantine and Slav literatures.

Summary/Abstract:The book by the Hungarian scholar of Slav Studies Imre Toth “Constantine-Cyril and Methodius” was published in Bulgarian in Sofia in 1981, during the First Congress of Bulgarian Studies. Professor Kuju Kuev was editor. During the same year the book appeared in the Hungarian language in Hungary. The purpose of the work was to present in a popular language the well-known data on the life and activities of the Slav enlighteners Cyril and Methodius. The lifes of the two brothers have served as the main sources. The analysis of the facts is everywhere purported by the historical substantiation, the author basing his arguments also on the most recent scientific achievements of Slav Studies. In conclusion, Toth dwells on the development of Slav literature in Bulgaria and its latest flourishing, concluding in these words: “What would be the fate of Slav literature without the intervention of Bulgaria no one knows. Possibly, it would have disappeared or would have functioned as a local, particular writing (as was the case with the Croatians) and would have no historical role which is discussed here”.
