- Keywords:Old‑Polish literature; Baroque epigram; Daniel Bratkowski; Hiacynt Przetocki
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to discuss the topic of physical and spiritual wellbeing as manifested in the works of two Baroque poets. Daniel Bratkowski, the author of the first volume, entitled „A World Partially Forgiven”, came from Volhynia and was a member of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Hiacynt Przetocki, in turn, the author of the volume entitled „A Fast‑day Dinner, or Trifle”, came from Greater Poland and was a Jesuit. In Bratkowski’s poetry, who focused particularly on spiritual wellbeing, his ruminations on the condition of a nobleman, his sins and his vices, were concentrated around social, political and eschatological matters. Hiacynt Przetocki, in turn, in his overview of various fast‑day dishes popular in his times, approaches the subject matter of the everyday life in a less serious manner, pointing to the beneficial properties of particular dishes and the harmfulness of others. Bratkowski, then, seems to be a greater malcontent and a more severe judge of his contemporaries than Przetocki. Nonetheless, both volumes constitute valuable sources of information regarding the mindsets, proclivities and sins of Polish nobility of the 17th century.

- Summary/Abstract:This preliminary study might be classified as an academic inquiry from the perspective of genre archaeology. In this inquiry, the author attempts to search for the genre roots of debate as a form which shaped the public discourse of that time. To this end, the author presents various practices of debate in Athens at the times of Pericles and Aristotle. Further, she presents Aristotle’s opinion regarding the usefulness of rhetoric and debate for dispute resolution in a democracy as well as his genre division of the forms of public speaking. Lastly, the author discusses several educational practices thanks to which those genre models could have been solidified and passed on to the next generations.

- Summary/Abstract:Unique copies of school chronicles consist a valuable part of local documentation heritage. In many cases, their significance becomes even more pronounced, given that – contrary to many historical documents – a lot of them survived the times of unrest. A school chronicle regarded as a text of culture belongs, in its material aspect, to the group of the so‑called remembering objects, and in its nonmaterial aspect, it sheds new light on the process of uncovering and interpreting or reinterpreting of the cultural past. From this perspective, school chronicles allow not only to construct a timeline of the local history, but also constitute one of the foundational elements of public discourse. As a historical source, school chronicles remain rather underutilized. Such chronicles, once upon a time, existed in all educational facilities, as they constituted an important document. Contemporarily, the presence of such chronicles in schools is more of a tradition, since chronicles ceased to perform their reporting and evaluating functions, and transformed into a kind of occasional writing.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the article is to direct the attention of the public to the heretofore neglected relationship between the popular volume of the sermons of Peregryn of Opole and the bourgeoning anti‑heretical discourse of the turn of the 13th century, in which the Dominican Order remained deeply involved. The article focuses on the figure of the author mainly in the context of the activity of the Inquisition, but also in the context of the secular reforms of the Fourth Council of the Lateran, which adopted a polemic stance with regard to insubordinate devotion.

- Summary/Abstract:The article aims to discuss the poems collected in the volume „A Garden of Trifles” by Wacław Potocki, in which the author presents the portraits of bearded and bald people. The focus on these particular characteristics is motivated by an inquiry into the reasons for the use of such characteristic features of the male physiognomy in Potocki’s poetry. On the one hand, they seem to direct the reader towards the notions of the concept and the symbol, while, on the other hand, they appear to stem from the author’s authentic interest in the surrounding world and his scrupulous study of the changes in human physiognomy.

- Keywords:Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski; epic poem; anthropology; perfection
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the relationship between the epic poem understood as the ideal of poetry and the vision of the ideal man in „De perfecta poesi” by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski. According to him, the epic poem is supposed to present the reader with the model of an ideal life, while its form is conceived to reflect its content: its narrative should be constructed in such a way as to showcase all ideal aspects of the protagonist’s life. The article argues at the same time that Sarbiewski uses the concept of the ideal in three different ways: the epic poem – just like any other literary texts – represents the ideal when it is written in such a way that if one were to remove or add an element, the result would be inevitably detrimental; when it contains a complete picture of reality, because it touches upon both the human and the divine; and when it presents its protagonist as easily balancing active and contemplative life.

- Page Range:115-131
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:Old‑Polish literature; Baroque; science; wisdom
- Summary/Abstract:The present article has been based on particular reflections which appeared in selected texts of ecclesiastical writing in 17th and 18th century. Those texts underscore the necessity of maintaining balance between the value of the human intellect and the spiritual needs of man, between the order of nature (the cognitive capabilities of man, the desire for domination over nature) and the order of grace (subordination to the wisdom of the Providence, wisdom as a gift, the attitude of humility). Simultaneously, the authors of that time (preachers, moralists, authors of reflections) praised human wisdom and the drive to knowledge. The same praise of wisdom finds its reflection in the ways of portraying significant figures in the Christian tradition, in particular the saints and the beatified. Moreover, valuable insight can be derived from the remarks regarding the proper ways of reasoning and, by extension, creative approach to the learning process, both on the part of the teachers as well as the students.

Moreover, Šajtar popularized this interesting, interdisciplinary topic that Bridges several research areas (folklore, literature, ethnography, institutions, economic history, etc.). In addition, Šajtar created the program devoted to studying folklore in Silesia. The article, then, attempts to remind the readers about these two important figures in the study of the “literary Silesia” and its heritage.

- Summary/Abstract:“Bogurodzica” has for centuries constituted one of the pillars of Polish culture. As the oldest religious song written in Polish, it designates avenues of interpretation of the medieval aesthetics both in literature and musicology. Moreover, its influence on society and the emergence of national identity cannot be overstated. Due to this monumental, sacrosanct nature, „Bogurodzica” has become an exhibit in the museum of medieval imagery. However, a song, even one which remains a symbol of the past, is always subject to revision during its performance. Thanks to its musical interpretation and reinterpretation, „Bogurodzica” can be read anew and made relevant, while those interpretations reveal hidden discourses. The following article aims at analyzing selected contemporary performances of the literary and musical relic, ruminating on its role in contemporary popular culture and the perception of the Middle Ages suggested by those performances.

- Keywords:Saint John Cantius; Felix saeculum Cracoviae; Grzegorz Jan Zdziewojski; bibliophilia; clergy
- Summary/Abstract:St. John Cantius is the primary patron saint of Poland. Due to his status as a professor in Alma Mater, he is particularly popular among the academic society, which popularized his worship across the centuries and contributed summa summarum to his canonization. The road of John Cantius in super Apotheosim was, however, long and full of dramatic twists and turns. It took a lot of effort on the part of many people to bring the canonical process to fruition. One of the people who made significant contribution to the popularization of John Cantius in the pre‑beatification stage (before 1676) was Rev. Grzegorz Jan Zdziewojski of Łask, a man whose commitment and sacrifices for the cause of John Cantius have been for centuries disregarded by the source texts and other studies. Thus, it seems prudent to use the 250th anniversary of the canonization of John Cantius (1767–2017) as a good occasion to redress the disservice done to this unjustly forgotten preacher, poet and bibliophile of Łask. The aim of the following paper is to bring the first poet of the Łask and Sieradz area back from the oblivion of history, who should be also regarded as an apostle of mercy and a martyr as well as the forefather of the regional movement in the literature of Polish Baroque.

- Summary/Abstract:The following article concerns literary texts commemorating the death of one of the most famous reavers of the Eastern Borderlands, who died in the battle of Rastawica in 1571. The author argues that, in his commemoration of Stanisław Strus, Jan Kochanowski, in his „Gravestone for Stanisław Strus”, praises his entire line, while „Song VI On Strus Who Died at Rastawica at the Hand of the Tatars in the Year of Our Lord 1571” by Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński constitutes an apotheosis of the heroic sacrifice of the knight, even though his death should not be regarded as a de facto suicide. Moreover, the article traces the parallels between the Polish hero and Roland of Old French chansons de geste.

His translatorial debut consisted of “excerpts from ancient poets.” He translated Homer, Horace, Ovid and Vergil. The collected works were then published in „The Report of the Headmaster of the Imperial‑Royal Secondary School in Przemyśl for the School Year 1888”. It was the third full translation of Ovid’s „Metamorphoses” into Polish (after the 17th‑century translations by Jakub Żebrowski and Walerian Otwinowski). Moreover, the article contains excerpts from Schneider’s translation of Ovid’s „Metamorphoses”.

- Summary/Abstract:The article attempts a comparative study of two poems: a Renaissance and a contemporary one, connected through a species of a tree, i.e. the linden. In both poems, the linden situates itself at the center of the poetic imagery. The article is particularly interested in the portrayals of the tree and the world of the poem created around it. Those two poems, written four hundred years apart, complement each other at the same time as they enter a dialogue concerning the place of nature in the life of man. Moreover, the search for the sources of inspiration allows to investigate the significance of the motif of the linden against the backdrop of the entire oeuvre of both writers.

- Keywords:Andrzej Komoniecki; banditry; Żywiec; chronicle
- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the issue of bandit activity in the Żywiec region in 17th and 18th century. The main source of information regarding that topic is „Chronography or the Chronicle of Żywiec” by Andrzej Komoniecki, which documented the history of Żywiec and its vicinity between 1400–1728. This singularly fascinating source text mentions a plethora of executions of local bandits, while the author does not shy away from detailed descriptions of torture and death penalty. The chronicle confirms that, due to the geographical location of Żywiec (the proximity of the mountains), bandit activity constituted a serious issues – hordes of bandits robbed houses, manors and parsonages, as well as traveling merchants, sparing no one who dared oppose them. On the other hand, many inhabitants of Żywiec assisted the bandits and – according to the sources – did so not only out of fear. On the contrary, the courage, resilience and lack of the fear of death that characterized the bandits made them more relatable to the rest of the populace. Those mechanisms, in turn, facilitated the emergence of the myth of the “noble bandit.”

- Keywords:Horatianism; Horatian parody; the Duchy of Pomerania; Dawid Hoppius
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents a hitherto unstudied volume of paraphrases of Horace, penned by David Hoppius and entitled „Parodiae in libros odarum et epodon Q. Horatii Flacci rebus sacris maximam partem accomodatae”, published in Szczecin in 1634. The volume was conceived as a spiritual reading for pious Lutherans, who could find there Christian equivalents of all songs, epodes and Carmen saeculare. The volume constitutes one of the largest Protestant collections of paraphrases of Horace, if not the largest one, whose structure and contents closely resembled volumes popular among the Jesuits. Hoppius’s choices and decisions as a translator (since such parody‑paraphrase should be considered intercultural translation) are informed by the idea of varietas, which serves – similarly to Horace’s version – as the organizing principle for the particular chapters.
