Summary/Abstract: Understanding the new stage of urban development towards smart and sustainable cities observed in the last decade requires knowledge of both the nature of the changes and the available opportunities that can allow cities to increase their wealth and raise the standard of living of their residents – under the conditions set out in Industry 4.0 strategy as well as the strategy of sustainable, responsible development. The monograph introduces the reader to the strategic context of digital transformation of cities and outlines a new methodology for managing urban projects, taking into account the benefits as well as economic, social and environmental barriers. The publication also discusses the theoretical foundations of the smart and sustainable city concept and the current trends in the digital transformation of cities. An illustrative example of the use of the new ideas relates to the Horticultural Expo 2024, which is to be organized by the city of Łódź. The book’s audience are a wide range of people interested in creating innovative solutions in the urban environment as well as in managing the digital transformation of cities.
