- Summary/Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to present the issue of the poetics of pleasure in The Adventures of Sindbad the Sailor, a well-known volume of fairy tales by Bolesław Leśmian. The collection of fantastical stories, seemingly directed only to the child audience, does not fit into the traditional model of axiology of children’s fairy tales. The title character consistently makes morally dubious decisions, guided by the principle of experiencing the fullness of pleasure rather than caution. As the story develops, Sindbad acquaints himself with a variety of shades of pleasure, derived, among other things, from the erotic sphere (when the young man engages in romances with successive fairy-tale princesses), aesthetic sphere (when he discovers new lands and experiences the beauty of the world), and intellectual sphere (which is associated with the pleasure of communion with literature, as well as the status of Sinbad, being both a reader and author). In this regard, it can be observed that in the prose of Leśmian, the hedonistic philosophy does not acquire a pejorative tone. The detailed interpretation of selected episodes shows how the sensations from discovering pleasure translate into emotional maturation of Leśmian’s hero, finally transforming the bored-with-life ladies’ man into a sensible family man.

On Adventures of a Thinker by Maria Dąbrowska)
- Author(s):Przemysław Kulawik

- Page Range:35-56
- No. of Pages:22
- Summary/Abstract:This paper concerns the second and last novel by Maria Dąbrowska, which appeared on the publishing market no sooner than five years after her death. To date, Adventures of a Thinker has not gained recognition among critics and readers. It has not yet been the subject of a more serious study. Its autobiographical character, however, has made it a very intriguing work. The main characters – Joseph and Eve – are a literary mask of the author, and their love’s twists and turns are a mirrored reflection of the most important love relationships Maria Dąbrowska had with Mariusz Dąbrowski, Stanisław Stempowski, Stanisława Blumenfeld, and Anna Kowalska. The article also focuses on the portrayal of the war, described from the perspective of civilians. It is against the background of the tragedy of the nation that the characters experience the rapture of love, try to live normally and enjoy the small things. However, their personal tragedies are inseparably linked to what is happening in the country. The important role in their lives is played by physical love, and the courage with which Dąbrowska writes about eroticism certainly makes the novel worthy of being restored to the attention of readers.

- Summary/Abstract:Based on the existing findings and conclusions concerning the study of socrealistic novels, this article relates to the issue of male sexuality emerging from literary works of that period. It also indicates the source of the structure of social roles as reflected in the prose of the 1950s and investigates gender issues. The analysis concerns Eugeniusz Paukszta’s novel Lody pękają (The Ice Breaks), which seems representative in this respect and it also presents these issues vividly.

On Spanish Eyes by Maria Nurowska)
- Author(s):Natalia Żórawska-Janik
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:75-106
- No. of Pages:32
- Summary/Abstract:Published in 1990, the novel Hiszpańskie oczy (Spanish Eyes) is an attempt to depict the difficult relationship between mother and daughter against the backdrop of the political events during World War II and People’s Poland. Maria Nurowska abandons the topos of a nurturing mother in favor of the creation of an unhappy, tormented woman struggling through everyday life, whose daughter is battling depression and bulimia. The author of this article focuses on the analysis of female characters and their psychological portraits. Women in Spanish Eyes display a wide range of character traits. They are guided by different values and have differing priorities. Each of them pursues happiness and pleasure in something else – Anna in encounters with successive men, whereas her daughter derives a special kind of satisfaction from focusing on her appearance and weight control. The topic of this paper is also the theme of the trauma transmitted from generation to generation, related to experiences of war, failed family relationships, and unrequited love. The author of this article interprets the characters’ behavior from the perspective of past experiences, which become present-day agonies. Therefore, the objective is to analyze Spanish Eyes through the prism of three main categories – the workings of memory, the influence of history on the life of an individual, and the image of a woman breaking with the stereotypes of a lover, grandmother, mother, and daughter.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article concerning the works of Gaja Grzegorzewska, I look closely at the category of pleasure as a key category for investigations conducted by the main heroine. The author constructs a specific relationship between the female detective and men, who also play a significant role in solving crime riddles. They are usually involved in a triangle, from which none of the participants are able or desire to free themselves. Thus, we have a story about crime, mysteries, and secrets from the past, the foundation of which proves to be the progression of addiction based on passion, lust, and pleasure. Sex becomes symbolic – through sex, the protagonists solidify their involvement in the investigation. When the tension between them begins, the pursuit of the offender continues.

On Katarzyna Bonda’s Crime Novels)
- Author(s):Olimpia Orządała

- Page Range:123-142
- No. of Pages:20
- Summary/Abstract:This article focuses on the pleasure of profiling in crime novels by Katarzyna Bonda. First, attention is drawn to crime stories authored by women, as well as to types of protagonists in contemporary crime prose and their psychologies. Next, the article discusses the pleasure of reading this type of literature and explains what the profiler’s work involves. It offers a thorough analysis of the four parts of the tetralogy Four elements by Sasza Załuska. It describes the private and professional life of the main heroine and creates a psychological profile of Załuska herself. Among other things, the problem of Sasza’s alcoholism was raised, her struggle with the chauvinistic remarks in the masculinized police environment, and her taking pleasure in working as a profiler. The article argues that for Sasza, profiling has become a form of escape from the demons of the past, the key to understanding not only other people, but herself above all, and to finding her own identity. Work is also a substitute for alcohol.

- Summary/Abstract:This article aims at showing the role of the mask in the works by Gaja Grzegorzewska. In constructing the non-standard character of a female detective Julia Dobrowolska, the author shows the non-revealing of the true self ad finem while assuming more and more newer roles not only as hiding one’s own identity behind the socially accepted behaviors, but, above all, as a way to “processˮ traumatic experiences and finally enjoy creating one’s own image and life.

On Love by Ignacy Karpowicz)
- Author(s):Agnieszka Nęcka
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:167-182
- No. of Pages:16
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to analyze and interpret Love by Ignacy Karpowicz, especially in terms of the Barthesian pleasures of the text. Karpowicz likes to test the sensitivity and patience of readers by checking how far he can go in his literary trickery. He is intrigued by the simultaneous hinting at and confusing of intertextual tropes, allowing him to construct tales at the “metaˮ level, which are clever and even “twistedˮ (both in thematic and poetological terms). The stories under this title are linked by the theme of homosexuality. Karpowicz, again, focuses on the impossible love, trying not so much to recount one of the many romance stories, but rather, capture the ontology of the feeling. Consequently, we can observe a quite risky recourse to sentimental rhetoric, but essentially, we are offered an account of a difficult personal struggle.

- Page Range:183-204
- No. of Pages:22
- Summary/Abstract:This paper discusses select Polish written accounts from trips to Australia and attempts to answer the question about the source of pleasure in the Australian encounters and how this pleasure was conveyed in the books concerning the escapades to the antipodes. The material comprises four accounts which, despite being addressed to a similar public and having a similar purpose of presenting Australia’s tourist attractions, are clearly distinct in terms of authorial perspective. These are: Australia. Gdzie kwiaty rodzą się z ognia (Australia. Where Flowers Are Born from the Fire) by Marek Tomalik, Blondynka w Australii (A Blonde in Australia) by Beata Pawlikowska, Julia jest w Australii (Julia Is in Australia) by Julia Raczko, and Australijczyk (Australian) by Marek Niedźwiecki. The subject of analysis is a way of describing the flavor of the antipodes, the experience of discovering and creating one’s own individual identity on the road, photographic recording of admired phenomena, and, finally, of creating a personal account.

- Summary/Abstract:This article concerns the volume Wyspa klucz (The Key Island) by an acclaimed Polish reporter Małgorzata Szejnert. In her collection of reportage, the author rescues the stories from Ellis Island from being forgotten. Based on several individual biographies (including Robert Watchorn, Annie Moore, John Baptiste Weber, and Jόzef Jagielski), set against the background of broader issues (i.e. emigration, multi-nationality, homelessness, foreignness, mythicism, pursuit of happiness and a new life, and suffering), Szejnert attempts to tell a universal story to save the history of Ellis Island from fading into oblivion.

On Eating and Devouring in the Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm)
- Author(s):Joanna Wawryk
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:229-252
- No. of Pages:24
- Summary/Abstract:The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are perceived as horrifying, whereas their pleasureful aspect seems harder to grasp. In the light of the fact that fairy tales primarily relate events, without giving descriptions of the internal experiences of their heroes, the topic is viewed through the theme of eating and devouring, which have become conveyors of horror, but also of temporary pleasures that bring positive or negative consequences. The analysis of the material is conducted in terms of the monomyth in order to point out that at different stages of the fairy tales, select themes are realized differently and perform different functions. At the first stage, the lack of food is often the cause of leaving home. At the second and most important stage, food becomes one of the trials and tasks facing the hero. The most horrifying tales are those in which a transgressive experience is associated with the theme of devouring. In the hierarchy of values encoded in fairy tales, the principle of pleasure loses to the principle of reality. The pleasureful aspect comes to the fore when all the adversities are overcome and the hero deserves happiness, the symbol of which is, for instance, royal feasts. Another important pleasureful aspect derived from fairy tales is the reception experience.

- Author(s):Anna Szóstak

- Summary/Abstract:This article is an attempt at answering the questions about the shifting functions and meanings of traditional typological categories in fantasy literature, and especially in its variation which, thanks to humor and parody in the fantastic details, has the ambition of recording and commenting on reality also in its depiction layer, related to the broadly-understood culture and its emerging paradigms, stereotypes, and conventions. Tracing these relationships on the example of a heroic character leads to very interesting findings and conclusions confirming that the convention of comic fantasy was for Terry Pratchett a sophisticated conveyor of subtle and very relevant philosophical observations regarding the mental, civilizational, and cultural psycho- and socio-sphere, as well as the transformations that occur in them. Thus, the subject matter of pleasure viewed in the context of the heroic myth gives rise to considerations about the sphere of values and meanings far beyond the discussion, which is based on the Epicurean model of life and the understanding of existence.
