Emil Breiter’s Reading of Stanisław Brzozowski)

- Keywords:Emil Breiter; Stanisław Brzozowski; criticism; interwar period; polemic
- Summary/Abstract:The author analyzes two comments on Stanisław Brzozowski made by Emil Breiter at the dawn of Polish independence. The budding critic was one of the first ones after 1918 to engage with the views of the prominent philosopher of culture. For the author, Breiter perpetuates the manner in which Brzozowski was read and interpreted before the Great War. This unfair and at times even unjust assessment of Brzozowski’s theories put forward by Breiter was the result of–as the article emphasizes–Breiter’s engagement with rationalist tendencies. In addition, the author reminds the reader that Breiter was an enthusiastic proponent of Georges Sorel, who was, in his opinion, the paragon of a social thinker.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the article is interested predominantly in the writings of Władysław Broniewski dated 1918–1922 (the poet referred to them as his diaries) as well as his journalistic writings. On their basis; the article analyzes two faces of the writer: the private and the official one. In his Diaries Broniewski touches upon a variety of different experiences: war memories; creative experiences connected with his desire to become a prominent figure in the literary sphere; the presence of women. Moreover; the article traces the instances of autothematic mentions and attempts at self-assessment; as well as the notes on preservation of the artistic output (both explicit and implicit). In his numerous articles; reviews; commentaries and essays; Broniewski the journalist was capable of approaching the discussed pieces in a serious manner (what is important: in the spheres of poetics; ideology and politics) while at the same time engaging in promotional activities. In the post-war reality of the Polish People’s Republic the writer was able to utilize his public presence to the full extent; however; the article argues that until the end; the public Broniewski always coexisted–though that coexistence proved consistently difficult–with the private Broniewski.

- Author(s):Gaweł Janik
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:69-98
- No. of Pages:30
- Keywords:Adolf Rudnicki; shtetl; Jews; interwar period
- Summary/Abstract:The article constitutes an attempt at tracing the presence of Jewishness in the pre-war writings of Adolf Rudnicki. It does so through the analysis of the places in which Rudnicki sets his stories, tracing the changes in the manner in which Rudnicki describes the shtetlekh. Initially described by the author as a dirty, backwards, insular, unfriendly space (The Death of the Operator), those spaces become synonymous with a contagious disease, which infects the bodies of the characters and gradually destroys them from within (Rats). His writings from the second half of the 1930s come with a change of perspective, while the Jewish towns become more fascinating and exotically seductive. They become the bastions of traditional, orthodox Jewish faith, which should be safeguarded from oblivion (Summer). Moreover, the article attempts to define the shtetl as a concept as well as reconstruct the evolution of the shtetl motif in Polish literature, particularly in its new incarnation which appeared in the interwar period.

- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on the civic disagreements concerning the diary of a Jewish fourteen-year-old; Rutka Laskier. The main part of the article comprises a study of the changes in attitudes of the inhabitants of Będzin; brought about by the discover of the diary in 2006; as well as the readings of the diary by the contemporaries. As the author aims to argue; the reading of such a witness account is subject to a significant transformation. The deformation happens in a twofold manner; erasing the traces of the past. What was supposed to “return” Rutka to the city and save her from oblivion became the source of political conflict; social disagreement and even potentially international scandals.

Growing up in Marymont – the poorest neighborhood in Warsaw – during the interwar period; the protagonist grapples with poverty and the cruelty of the local community. Fascinated with communism; Rysiek decides to join the party just to be disappointed when Stalin disbands the Communist Party of Poland. - Keywords:The Galician movement; tale;alcohol;
- Summary/Abstract:Andrzej Stojowski (1933–2006) was a prominent representative of the Galician movement in 20th century Polish literature. The article is initially devoted to the description of the reception of a volume of short stories entitled A Castle in Carpathia (1973), which includes the analyzed short story. “Siesta in Secession” constitutes for the author of the article not only a caricatural description of a well-connected parochial gentleman but also a description of the old world and its associated worldview. The story, then, can be regarded as a warm writerly goodbye to the place he had been writing about for a long time. Another notable feature of the short story is its nonchalance in its treatment of the literary form of the Sarmatian tale.

- Keywords:Janusz Głowacki; Great Powers Tremble;August 1980;
- Summary/Abstract:The article constitutes an attempt at reviving the intriguing novel Great Powers Tremble by Janusz Głowacki (1981). The author recounts the events surrounding the writing of the novel and reconstructs the original contexts in which–following its launch and directly after that–it was discussed. First and foremost, however, the author is interested in the artistic and content-related potential of Głowacki’s novel, attempting to showcase its continued relevance, originality and the strength of expression contained in this fairly short and rather forgotten work. To this end, the author points to the peculiar, extremely successful and subversive at the same time creation of the anti-hero protagonist, and in the concluding parts of the article, he attempts to contrast Great Powers Tremble with the last work published while Głowacki (1939–2017) was still alive, a volume of stories entitled I Came (2013).

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Polish Literature
- Page Range:181-198
- No. of Pages:18
- Keywords:forest; nature; house; imagination; Concord; Feliks Netz
- Summary/Abstract:Feliks Netz betrays a particular sensitivity towards the nature. He describes the complicated relationship between nature and man; who on the one hand supports it – creating its “constructs” (forests; sanctuaries; or parks) through living in and growing alongside nature – but on the other hand contributes to its degradation. The latter seems to be more frequent than the former: nature is being destroyed by the passage of time and the superiority of one law of nature over the other from the one side; and by the civilization from the other side. The article focuses on the metaphor of the forest in the poems included in the volume of Feliks Netz’s poetry entitled Concord. The green space described by the poet – as Barbara Zwolińska says – “at the brink of destruction and under the threat of fire or felling; feels reminiscent of a house falling apart.” The poet sees both of those spaces in a very similar manner.

- Summary/Abstract:Ryszard Kapuściński’s The Emperor and Shah of Shahs are most commonly interpreted as universal metaphors for the decline of power and are regarded as only loosely related with the actual history of Ethiopia and Iran. The following article attempts to read Kapuściński’s account of the Islamic revolution alongside source material regarding the history of Iran. Moreover, the article notes the influences of August 1980 on the ultimate form of the book and its intertextual connections with Zbigniew Herbert’s 1981 poem “The Power of Taste.” The inclusion of varied contextual information allows to see Shah of Shahs as a multidimensional story which at the same time discusses the history of Iran, touches upon the central ideals of the revolution and constitutes an affirmation of the arts.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the mechanism of uncovering the past in Monika Sznajderman’s novel The Counterfeiter’s Pepper. A Family Story. A series of photographs sent by the relatives from America becomes for the author the starting point for her journey into the past marred by the memory of the Holocaust. The rediscovered photographs become, in the process of reconstructing the family history, literary landscapes of a world that no longer exists, while the author testifies to the physical closeness of the dead that she feels. The author constructs the past out of the broken photographs, contrasting them with other sources and searching for a point of contact with the family members lost in the Holocaust. Following Sznajderman’s process, the author of the article discusses and analyzes the issue of literary creation of characters (the memory of a person) on the basis of photographs and remarks upon the difficulties in reconciling with the familial past, resulting from complicated identity issues.

- Keywords:city; cobblestone; walking; identity;experience;
- Summary/Abstract:The author attempts to analyze “a novel of walking” by Michał Cichy; entitled Today is Every Day. The slow-paced narrative presents the reader with the portrait of Ochota (a borough in Warsaw) and the numerous dangers brought about by the contemporary world; with its chaos and overabundance of uninhabitable space. The novel also touches upon the experiences of the protagonist; who lives in the world of multiple practices and models of communication. The protagonist of the novel of walking witnesses the city; absorbing the polyphony of a multicultural metropolis: the garbage dump of lights; the roar of arteries; the beat of the railway tracks; the noise of construction equipment. Warsaw’s heteroglossia manifests itself also in overheard conversation and the mix of sociolects. The polysensory experience of Ochota is at the same time loud and quiet; colorful and monochromatic; crowded and desolate; Polish and multicultural; in “abject poverty” and “in the care of money.” The narrative of Today is Every Day scrupulously constructs a portrait of Warsaw from fragments of images; voices; scents; while the varied images of the city interact with each other.Cichy’s novel leads the reader down the cobblestone; down the pavement; the trodden paths of the city; close to the concrete and the real.

- Keywords:historical novel; Olga Tokarczuk; Maciej Hen; Jacek Dehnel;controversies;
- Summary/Abstract:In the article, the author – on the basis of three novels: Olga Tokarczuk’s The Books of Jacob, Jacek Dehnel’s Mother Makryna and Maciej Hen’s Solfatara – attempts to showcase the character of contemporary historical novel. Those three briefly discussed novels make it evident that 21st-century writers are eager to revisit the past and wearing historical masks. The emphasis on acts of tracing and retracing the character and mentality of the people living in previous centuries seems to be less prominent, while the issues of identity and subjectivity come to the fore, allowing the authors to formulate a trivial, perhaps, conclusion: that the human nature, despite the historical and geographical changes, remains unchanged. However, such narratives more and more consistently give voice back to those who had been hitherto excluded from and ignored by the historical account, while the protagonists are usually controversial to some degree.
