Summary/Abstract: Another volume of the series Laboratory of Culture is devoted to the research output of Ralph Linton. It would be hard to overstate the achievements of the scholar in question, whose major contribution into the process of transferring anthropology from museal exhibition halls to national universities, was instrumental in making it an academic discipline. The Linton’s output, who is renowned in Poland mainly for The Cultural Background of Personality – which is worthwhile of separate discussion and in fact demands it. Therefore, we decided to create a monograph devoted to the American anthropologist in question. The volume includes both chapters which are premiere discussions of Lipton’s research biography in Poland and some analytical studies aimed at updating and utilizing his proposals as scietific tools by applying them to the new cultural material. An important theme of our publication is also the American and Polish reception of Lipton’s works.

- Summary/Abstract:The text The Cultural Background of Personality by Ralph Linton; considered as a specific kind of a message; interpreted in terms of methodical rather than methodological guidelines; nowadays seems to be a noteworthy starting point for understanding the processes that have taken place in cultural sciences in the previous decades. The reasons for marginalizing this proposal in Poland seem interesting as well; especially in the context of Linton’s reflection on ”why members of a given society accept or reject certain inventions”. Three issues will appear in the considerations presented: a fragmentary reconstruction of Linton’s argument taking into account the debts to then leading humanist concepts; the non-obvious Polish reception of his concepts and the potential embedded in his proposals; especially when it comes to the instruments that can be used in interdisciplinary research of historical and contemporary cultures.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the issue of shaping cultural personality in two perspectives - Ralph Linton’s: utilizing achievements in anthropology; sociology and psychology; and Sigmund Freud’s and his psychoanalysis. The aim of the juxtaposition of the two research approaches was to find common points in the research on the shaping of human personality and the relationship between the individual and society and culture. However; in addition to the common points; another important element in describing the achievements of both researchers was the indication of (often very subtle) differences between them; which confirms; in many respects; the groundbreaking nature of their research at the time.

- Keywords:primitive art; anthropology of art; Ralph Linton;
- Summary/Abstract:Ralph Linton’s article is an attempt to answer the question of what unites and what divides art of Western culture and non-European artistic forms. The aims of the primitive artist are not very different; at bottom; from those of the civilized one. Superficial differences are his lack of intent for naturalistic representation and his greater attention to technical virtuosity; rendered important by his audience’s understanding of the problems and techniques involved in his work. It appears so to the European because the latter does not understand native symbolism.
