Summary/Abstract: The conference entitled Linguistic and Cultural Interactions – An Interdisciplinary Approach (TRANS-LINGUISTICA 3) is the third of a series of conferences launched in 2011 with the clear aim of creating tradition. It is a continuation from several points of view. The theoretical foundations have not changed: we are convinced that in the multicultural and plurilingual Europe, cultural interactions and multilingualism are true values. It is also our aim through the multilingual sections to create opportunities for presentations held in one of the traditional languages of Transylvania (Romanian, Hungarian, and German) as well as the possibility to engage in the European scientific discourse through the English language. The topics of the conference wish to ensure stability (foreign language teaching; mother-tongue language pedagogy; the theory and practice of translation; language use and language contact; linguistic and cultural interactions) and, at the same time, to create a flexible framework for the presentation of different research topics, of new methods, of transferring practical experience. Through the interdisciplinary approach, we also wish to emphasize the fact that our conference intends to be a forum for scientific dialogue between the representatives of the different disciplines.

- Summary/Abstract:In my paper, I wish to reveal some astounding similarities between the ways how contemporary Northern Irish and Transylvanian Hungarian poets encounter silence. Along centuries of their different histories, silence has been engrained into the identity of these two nations. Expression of confusion, awe, grief, pain, anger, and shame, their silence is inevitable self-torture. An evil that must be endured with responsibility, and transformed into sweetness and light despite reality, a final resource, an ultimate human response to evade moral disintegration. In my study, the themes, motives, genres, poetical attitudes, and responses of several Northern Irish and Transylvanian Hungarian poets are being compared. There are poems with exactly identical titles. Moreover, the silence of certain poets leads from self-guilt to the fruitful regeneration of both the poets and their audience.

- Summary/Abstract:In the years of preparation for his public activity, Széchenyi was faced with the issue of language use, and during the elaboration of his reform programme he was forced to address this complex, complicated, multifaceted question in much more detail. As a politician, he had to deal with the issue of plurilingualism and multilingualism, as well as the status of the Hungarian language; as a writer, he explored the possibilities of linguistic expression with a new approach as he planned writing taking into account the aspect of the norms of expectations of the recipients (the readers). He approached the question from the issue of the success of communication: in the first case, he explored the problem of “we do not understand each other” from the aspect of plurilingualism and multilingualism. In the second case, he analysed the possibilities of text creation based on the recognition that meaning outlined in the text does not necessarily coincide on the level of the writer and on that of the recipient.

- Summary/Abstract:The present study aims at outlining the status and position of the Hungarian translators and interpreters in Romania, with a special regard to the legal framework and the state of training of young professionals. It also addresses the issues that can be outlined regarding the process of authorization. The study also discusses why interpreters of Hungarian are much more likely to be born in Romania, and not made, a factor that hinders the professionalization of Hungarian interpreters in Romania.

This kind of translation is considered to be a form of simultaneous interpreting because it is an on-line or real-time rendering of a written text in oral form (reading in language B a text written in language A).

- Summary/Abstract:The production and decoding of media texts are phenomena that display certain linguistic and extralinguistic peculiarities. In the case of audio-visual texts, there is a set of overtly expressed meanings accompanied by a number of hidden, unstated meanings, called implied or implicated meanings. This study attempts to make a contrastive analysis of presuppositions on a corpus extracted from two main types of media texts: the discourse of advertising and radio news, focusing on the semantic–pragmatic implications of each.

- Summary/Abstract:The question that in multilingual regions (such as the case of Romanian and Hungarian people in Transylvania) which ethnic group should learn the language and the culture of the other has proved to be an outstandingly tough one. These quarrels usually turn into an unnecessary demonstration of force – but this is not what I am going to discuss. It is a well-known fact that most of communication (about 65–70%) is non-verbal. Only 30–38% of communication is verbal, and even that is paralinguistic (accent, intonation, inflection, tonality). We need nothing else than the speaker’s voice to find out his/her gender, character, age, and dialect. Only 7% of communication is found in the meaning of words. Taking these facts into account, it is odd that we do not really bother with non-verbal communication and its opportunities, which could solve a tremendous amount of problems. In some situations, we are successfully handling non-verbal communication, in others, we are not. When can we and when can we not handle information using nothing else than metacommunication? When can we replace the verbal with the non-verbal? This work tries to give answers to these questions.

- Summary/Abstract:Minority existence involves bilingualism or multilingualism, which permeates everyday life and its numerous decisions. This time, we examine the motivations in school choice of the eighth-grade students and their parents from Cluj County, especially form a linguistic point of view. How is bilingualism reflected in school choice? Whose decision is that where and in what language children continue their studies? In what manner does the linguistic factor influence the decisions of the students and those of their parents? What impact does this have on the functioning and possible decline of the Hungarian educational network in Cluj? These questions are very important every year in terms of school enrolment plans (and not only): for how many Hungarian classes is there demand in certain settlements of the county; what “flows” are taking place during the move from secondary school to high school?

- Summary/Abstract:This study presents a part of a larger research dealing with the components of self-image based on self-portraits written by primary-school pupils – the various linguistic aspects of naming their characteristics in the self-portraits. The research is based on the realization that the monitoring units of psychological content analysis can be personal documents, case studies, life stories, and biographies. According to the multifactorial theory of the self-concept, the repeated behaviours observed by the individual about him-/herself and the past experiences are transformed into self-schemas. This perspective is the starting point of the idea that the contents of these already developed self-schemas are verbalized in the self-portraits.

International projects and developments require team-work and verbal interaction in foreign languages. In the language-teaching process, speaking skills can be developed through role-plays. In this study, we have made an attempt to reveal engineering students’ and engineers’ attitude and opinion related to role-plays in language learning, and explore those job-related situations in which they will need to use the target language.

- Summary/Abstract:Starting from the context theory, we identified and revealed the speaking frames of two of V. Voiculescu’s poems. Our linguistic and po(i)etic journey tried to reveal the thresholds of those frames theorized by Eugenio Coşeriu, thresholds which are not closing but opening the poet’s spiritual horizon. We made this journey through the “common” Romanian words, decayed, seemingly, to the status of chat tools. Briefly, we tried to reaffirm the world’s Logos-centred spirit reflected from the work of a traditional poet, combining, transdisciplinary, Coşeriu’s tools being useful in the development of one of the newest branches of linguistics, pragmatics.

- Summary/Abstract:In this study, we intend to analyse the possibilities to translate cultural references in Liviu Rebreanu’s novel Ion into Hungarian. Rebreanu’s novel presents typical aspects of a Romanian community in a Transylvanian village in the multicultural time and space of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ion is a text interwoven with cultural references, with phrases related to the daily life of the community from the Pripas village, phrases related to holidays, proper names (anthroponyms and toponyms, with and without symbolic load), names of objects from the household, clothes, dances, etc. We wish to study the possibilities and techniques how these realia are translated in the Hungarian version of the novel, a translation signed by Tibor Oláh.

- Summary/Abstract:The richest source of semantic obscene words refers to the human body and its parts, as well as to its physiological functions, particularly to those which are related to love. Thus, the phenomenon we are interested in dates back in linguistics over two hundred years. Although the selected examples represent „a fairly intimate zone”, we must say that the component elements of euphemisms or ad hoc euphemisms remain foreign. Divorce, quarrels, private parts, genitals, etc. are constant sources of the origin of euphemisms. Modesty, religious and social prohibitions are the reasons for the use of euphemisms in this domain.

- Summary/Abstract:The terminological inventory of present-day specialized fields has developed not only through traditional lexical methods of European linguistics (terminologization, derivation, thematic compounds, etc.) but also through specific cognitive constructs. The terminological vs. conceptual metaphors (the latter expressing a specialized meaning, most of them being registered in general and/or special dictionaries) are formed based on a preconceptual pattern, and they develop disciplinarily and/or interdisciplinarily through metaphor transformation. Virus is a generic metaphor with different degrees of relevance in the medical, pharmaceutical, and informatics field, similar to the Gr. Eidos, the qualities of which in our conception being transdisciplinarity and trans-temporality.

The premise that every language is affected by other languages is also true in the case of Romanian. From all of the contact elements, we investigate the ones that have entered the language from Hungarian. In the present article, we are going to analyse all the modalities of phonetic-phonological adaptation of palatal consonants of Hungarian (which have no articulatory correspondents in Romanian).

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents preliminary results of research of primary sources (newspaper advertisements, postcards, official documents), which show the effects of language and education policies, economic conditions and social relations on language practices in Pula/Pola (Austria) and Rijeka/Fiume (Hungary) during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In spite of different policies, Italian maintained its prestige in both cities, indicating the strong connection between language, culture, and social class.

- Summary/Abstract:Istria is a multicultural region with very significant population, which puts a strong emphasis on their regional identity. At the official level, Istria is a bilingual region (Croatian – Italian), but multilingualism is a distinctive feature of its everyday reality. Based on qualitative ethnographic data, the paper explores the degree to which the local Istrian varieties, code-switching, and receptive multilingualism carry symbolic value for their speakers and play a crucial role in the formation and preservation of the authentic regional identity. Based on the results of the research, the paper re-examines the aim and applicability of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

- Summary/Abstract:This study represents part of a larger research within the field of pragmatics. The area of study is the language of stand-up comedies, namely, utterances considered to be rude and offensive, which are eventually perceived as humorous. The present paper points out lexical and structural ambiguity in a collection of jokes performed by British stand-up comedian Jimmy Carr and looks into the meticulous construction of their language with the purpose to show how successfully the comedian manages to increase humorous impact by using offence embedded in ambiguities.

- Summary/Abstract:It is a generally accepted idea that the more, the better. At first sight, this is the case with term bases as well, and their quality relies on having as many relevant entries as possible in two languages. However, when a bilingual term base is completed with terms from a third language, complications arise. Our study analyses a sample from an English–Romanian database of legal terms when entries are added in Hungarian, leading to a considerable growth in entries. The conclusion returns to CAT-tool vendors, who develop their software facilitating translations from a source language into a target language.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, I will illustrate the important role that translation can play in teaching a foreign language and I will also analyse some of the vocabulary activities that I have carried out with my students, making use of translation. - Summary/Abstract:Georg Scherg’s Paraskiv Paraskiv is an outstanding novel offering a detailed panorama of the Romanian village of the post-war period. A remarkable value of the novel manifests itself in the depiction of the cultural and linguistic dimension of different ethnic groups living together in Transylvania. The multiethnicity of the region, the cohabitation of several ethnic groups is expressed in an impressing manner especially through the phenomenon of linguistic code-mixing and the use of narrating language and the language of communication among the characters. The present paper has in view the investigation of Georg Scherg’s novel from an intercultural perspective, focusing on linguistic diversity and the phenomenon of linguistic hybridity.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper deals with the German–Swedish linguistic contacts in the Middle Ages, with their properties and consequences. First of all, due to the expansion of the Hansa League, the Scandinavian languages, among them Swedish, came under the influence of Low German. The result was the taking over of a lot of words, and with these also of word formation elements and grammatical structures; some of them are to be found today only in Swedish.
