Summary/Abstract: The development of tourism is accompanied with positive effects as well as negative impacts on the natural and cultural heritage of destinations, local economy and inhabitants. In order to minimize the negative impacts, the general requirements for sustainable tourism development have been introduced and they should be incorporated in strategic documents of tourism destinations. Therefore the aim of the article is to analyze the extent to which the strategic documents of public authorities concerning tourism development in Slovakia and in its administrative regions meet the criteria of sustainable tourism development.
