Summary/Abstract: Considering the reading issues in the 21st century, where students are required to master by critical reading and reflection, and connecting with actual life situations, the paperpresents the need to stimulate the development of reading competencies of classroom education students. Previous research in elementary school teaching in the field of language 219and literary education points to the dominant representation of literary texts in the structure of curricula. The non-literary texts are insufficiently represented in classroom practice and textbooks, although they couldserve as linguistic models for different forms of animation of student's reading competencies in all teaching subjects and in higher quality of extracurricular reading. Led by this knowledge, the paper discusses the methodological aspects of non-literary texts in classroom teaching and lists reading comprehension strategiesthatenhance the degree of development of reading competencies. The content of non-literaltexts, as a source of professional and scientificin formation, can contribute to linking and extending previously acquired knowledge at and outside school. In this context, the life and reading experience that students have in some phases of their literary-intellectualdevelopment plays a significant role.
