INNOVATION POTENTIAL OF REGIONS AS A MIRROR OF ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE

Summary/Abstract: Innovations have become a key factor of the regional competitiveness. Their existence is dependent on the quality of the knowledge creation and diffusion system. This system is represented mainly by universities and research organizations. They are available in regions in different intensity, which is also reflected in the presence of skilled human resources. In the article, selected factors of this subsystem are expressed as an innovation potential of regions. At the same time the economic performance is observed, which is represented by a group of factors too. The study is focused on the Czech regions (NUTS3). Based on the evaluation of innovation potential and economic performance their ranking is compiled. Subsequently, the relationship between the values of the total score of the both ratings is investigated. The Pearson correlation coefficient has been used. It is proven that the innovation potential corresponds closely with the economic performance.
