Summary/Abstract: The authors present instructions on taking care of oneself (including one’s voice) for people who are preparing to speak at various types of academic conferences and often work with their voice. The text contains references to non-verbal aspects that are important when presenting, i.e., posture, way of sitting or positioning of hands. Researchers' views on how to start speeches are also quoted and aspects that may facilitate the start of a speech are discussed. Instructions on what should be avoided in order not to damage the image and reception of the speech at the very beginning, proper use of the microphone, and problems that may arise during the speech are also highlighted.
