Summary/Abstract: The need to defend the country in order to preserve its territorial integrity, combined with the geopolitical situation in the 19th century, led the decision-makers of that time to rethink the organization and equipping needs of the army. The predominantly mountainous terrain in the central area gave rise to the idea of setting up special troops to operate in the Alpine environment – the mountain troops.
