Summary/Abstract: This study is based on the overview of publicly available research on media and journalism in Bulgaria in the first two decades of the 21st century, as well as on meta-analytical methods to assess the capability of monitoring and analyzing the media environment. The focus is on the critical points in the field of journalism, outlined based on the collected data, to highlight the risks and opportunities for the development of the Bulgarian media environment and, in particular, deliberative communication. Although Bulgaria is considered a free country with legally guaranteed political and civil rights and freedoms, the study shows that journalism and media are under the threat of growing instability and dependence. The research is conducted as a part of the EU Horizon 2020 project Mediadelcom (2021 – 2024).
