The present study is the result of a four-year research done in the Roman-Catholic parish archives in the Archbishopry of Alba Iulia. Having direct access to the archive, we have been able to classify the various types of documents one can find in a parish archive. In principle, the first parish documents date from the time when each parish came into being (i.e. the 12th and 13th centuries), but, in fact, the earliest written ecclesiastical documents which have been preserved in the Archbishopry of Alba Iulia come from the end of the 17th century. Documents written before this period have been persevered only as copies. This situation can be easily explained if one takes into account the historical circumstances, which had a significant impact on the “destiny” of the Roman-Catholic parish archives. In spite of adverse circumstances, the richness of these small archives (of about four or five meters of documents in each parish) provides a unique and, as yet, little investigated source of microhistorical research. That is why we should value these archives more and investigate them more thoroughly.

The following paper suggests that the visitation records of churches and parishes from the Old Polish period be held in the structure of the fonds of diocesan historical archives (storing). This issue is omitted both in theory and practice of diocesan archives in Poland due to diffi culties (or, as many claim-impossibility) in applying the principle of provenance to the production of the episcopal chancery during the period of functioning the book of inscriptions. So far, only the Rev. Stanisław Librowski has suggested the project to solve this problem. This project, however, does not fully respect, acknowledged in the archival science, the principle of provenance.

The disaster that has befallen the largest city on the Rhine is immeasurable and its consequences to people and the wider community feel for a long time. When we see pictures of scale disaster, we think “no way” that a lot of that could be saved. So that the percentage of 96% of salvaged material is extremely great success. “Found no means saved”, as said the head of the Historical Archive of Cologne Bettina Scmidt-Czaia after the end of the search for the material, because the archives has had varying degrees of damage, and the first task was to identify and determine its origin, and the process will take a few more years. As can be seen from the given examples, a new complex damage occurred in many cases because they appeared previously not repaired the old damage, and require extra time and complicated procedures of restoration. From this disaster has yet emerged something “positive”, so to say. The project was born in Digital historical archive of Cologne, just a few days after the collapse of a building archives. The goal was to digitize the restored originals and microfilms, as well as photographs and copies of which are held by private persons and make them available online on the website archives. So from an “idea emergency”, thanks to various donations and support by the DFG (German Research Community) grew a great new project. The restoration and digitization of salvaged material is the basis of this project. Material that is left after the rescue of the 20-odd asylum archives throughout Germany, there is systematically out of the restoration and digitization center Historical Archive in Cologne-Porz (RDZ). There the material restored in a few steps preparing for digitization. As the most important measure and a first step to re-use material imposes the process of dry cleaning. After a dry cleaning material submitted to archivists, who decide whether to digitize the material and determine the safety limits of availability due to damage. Mainly digitized material that is often used, in order to protect the originals, and the material that can not be identified, in order to over the Internet could offer someone to identify. Meanwhile, the use of barcodes and unidentified material, or material that can not be put under a certain signature, as well as make it easier to be machine-readable. Digital Archive of Historical Archive of Cologne will continue to be the most important source for research and access to the memory of Cologne.

The archival supervision in the control‑related activities of the ecclesiastical authorities has a rich tradition of many centuries in the history of the Catholic Church. In the course of episcopal and dean inspections not only the fact of regular record‑keeping of baptisms, nuptials and burials of parishioners was checked but also the state of preservation and the condition of the storage of the remaining documents produced by parish offices. However, after 1945, in the altered conditions of the political system, the continuity of the practice of the archival supervision was broken. Since 1997 in the Katowice diocese a project of the centralisation of the parish archive resources in the Archdiocesan Archives in Katowice has been realised. At the same time, the project entails the first complete inventory‑taking of the archival heritage of the Katowice diocese to be carried out in the post‑war period.

As one of Poland’s major rivers, the Oder requires the writing of an updated monograph to provide a new perspective on its history. In the historical portion (up to 1945), this work should be based on a thorough search of libraries and archives. Among those archives containing the most material relating to the river’s past, the State Archive in Szczecin should also be included. This article discusses the resources of the Szczecin archive in terms of research on the history of the lower Oder River. For the Ducal period, the most interesting collection featuring records pertaining to the river is undoubtedly the Archives of the Dukes of Szczecin. Among the materials preserved here are those on the navigation of the Warta-Oder or trade issues between Szczecin and Frankfurt on the Oder. On the other hand, for the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, the most valuable archives, from the Oder’s perspective, are the collections of the Chief Presidium of the Pomeranian Province and the Szczecin Governmental District (Regierungsbezirk). Here we can find many folios discussing: navigation and fishing on the lower Oder, regulatory work on the river and finally the effects of the Oder floods. Also noteworthy are the files of the Directorate of Water Construction in Szczecin, which record all hydrological works carried out on the Oder. The above-mentioned groups constitute the core of the State Archive in Szczecin, which should be subjected to a thorough search if a decision is made to work on a new monograph of the Oder.
