Towards an anthropolgy of care: cleanliness and consumption in urban Romanian homes

The anthropology of care has come to the fore in recent years and has produced a number of distinctive and valuable approaches, which this paper characterises as relatedness, care politics, and as value-based. This paper argues that while all these approaches have merits, a better appreciation is required of the silent, embodied sense of care in specific localised contexts. The appreciation of care requires a more precise anthropological language to describe the variety of phenomena referred to, and use of the term care to refer to local manifestations, experiences, emotions and work practices. I outline one example of a material culture of care in urban Romania, which reveals how a procedural and creative sense of the domestic is manifested and appropriated through soaps and cleanliness.

Cafes do not really exist in the old sense. There were about 600 at the turn of the century. At the end of the forties most of them were closed or converted to espressos. Café New York (VII. Erzsébet körút 9-11.) in landmark New York palace (an insurance company headquarters) originally opened in 1894. That’s where modem Hungarian literature wéis actually born. After WWH it was reopened as a sportsware department store. Then it was reborn again as a café. A writer, when asked by a waiter what he wanted to have, answered: “A pair of tennis shoes...” The place is quite deserted nowadays, especially since the departure of the editorial offices of a dozen dailies and weeklies from the building.

The present study tries to analyse the manner in which the discourse of Romanian street protests, manifested through banners and slogans written in English, gets the structure of an action meant, on the one hand, to express the protestors’ dissatisfaction, and, on the other hand, to unite people that share common beliefs about specific problems. This paper focuses on the relationship between the protestors’ being (Romanian, but also EU citizens) and acting (in English, in a joint social action, such as the street protests). Having as a background the principles of visual rhetoric, the paper tries to show how the slogans written in English, in the context of the Romanian street protests of 2017 get a persuasive effect.

Between 1967 and 1972, period when the possibility of founding in Iaşi an open-air museum was taken into consideration, complex researches and acquisitions carried out on the territory of the county of Botoşani, various materials were purchased, describing the most significant aspects of the Botoşanean village. The collections which entered the heritage of the Ethnographic Museum in Iaşi, illustrate through their items the traditional occupations and handicrafts of the inhabitants of this zone of Romania, and include various objects of domestic inventory, furniture articles, numerous wooden objects of domestic usage, folk costumes, ceramic ware etc. A particularly interesting item is the wind mill, of rather small dimensions (with mill stones), purchased from Crăiniceni village, Paltin commune, and which has been installed in the first room – illustrating agriculture - of the permanent exhibition of the museum.

The subject of this paper is the question of assessing the impact of structural industrial diversification of companies in terms of their innovative activities in Poland. The authors attempt to answer three basic questions: Firstly, is the domestic aggregation sufficient for diversifying innovation in Polish industry? Secondly, do companies in various industries behave differently in terms of their innovative efforts? Thirdly, are technologically advanced industries more interested in the active creation of knowledgeor its passive transfer to domestic industry and to what extent? The main goal of the study was an attempt to seek out the directions and influence of various industries on the innovative activities of companies in Poland. The methodological section was developed using logit modeling based on probability theory. The study has shown that the key to accelerating research and development in Poland is the stimulation of such activities, primarily in the case of entities in the high and medium- high technology sectors. The low technology sector is a significant burden and limits possibilities for the active creation of new solutions in Poland. The passive transfer of knowledge should only be supported by companies included in these technologies to a limited extent. In other industries, the transfer of knowledge generated significant interest regardless of type of activity. At this stage of economic development, research and development processes are evolving in the direction of high technologies, while investments remain the domain of a broad group of companies unless they relate to traditional technologies.

We know that for all instruments, the Baroque era represented a period of transformation: some of them appeared in that era, while the Renaissance instruments underwent substantial changes, some of which were totally rebuilt.This true revolution, however, was slow, with the various instruments undergoing transformations in turn. In this epoch, the harpsichord, the clavichord and the pianoforte coexist. As early as the eighteenth century, we find a precipitation of change in the construction of keyboard instruments, with essential transformations taking place, the elements that have been added over time are now rethought and resized so as to meet new aesthetic requirements and musical practices increasingly diverse and complex. In the following, we will discuss the evolutionary course of the instruments and their diversity and importance.

Global competition has evolved from the competition between companies to the competition between regions. In this context, clusters play an important role as competences’ concentration poles. The cluster initiatives represent concentrated efforts to increase the wealth and competitiveness in a certain region including companies, local administration, research and training institutions. This paper proposes the analysis of the European clusters’ role in ensuring the regional development. Resulted conclusions emphasize both the positive results of clusters’ existence, as well as the fields where improvements can be made in order to increase the clusters’ impact on the economic development.

In order to achieve the desired performances and the increased value added to the final consumer, organizations need not only to integrate their core businesses and align them to business strategy but also to embrace the marketing philosophy. After presenting the main issues in operationalizing the marketing performances, we propose an empirical research using a working dataset of 64 firms from various industries to analyze the relationship between marketing and organizational performances. The research methodology employed is based on structural equations modeling. Results document that marketing orientation influences organizational performances in the framework of the supply chain management strategic approach to organizational performances.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that Shrek is more than a simple animation for children and that it uses constructs which apply to our day-to-day lives, irrespective of the fact that we are fully grown adults, dealing with taxes and bills. The plan is to detail the ways in which humour was generated, as well as explain how the film gained its success by deconstructing the classic notion of fairy tales and everything they invoke. Although not the first of its kind, Shrek sets the bar quite high for animations, comedies, rom-coms and realistically-portrayed relationships everywhere. Scenes in the film will be used as examples of the concepts herein described.

Positive psychology was founded on three main pillars: positive emotions, positive character traits associated with good living and positive institutions that create conditions for students to flourish (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Nevertheless, the research in psychology so far has been concentrating on positive emotions and character strengths. Enabling institutions have been the least well studied of the three pillars. A salient additional perspective, as MacIntyre and Mercer (2014) propound, would be to concentrate on the context in which students can experience enjoyment and flourish in foreign language learning. I try to fill the niche by analyzing a language school in the further education context in Poland which seems to be a positive institution. I base my study around the two criteria: enabling success and promoting positive language learning environments or student wellbeing. The language school is analyzed from three different angles: physical, pedagogical and psychological by means of an ethnographical research method and participant observation. The study is carried out in order to answer the research question: Can the school be labeled as a positive institution? The results demonstrate that the institution enables success as well as provides a positive learning environment and thus could be regarded as positive. The study is hoped to have contributed to positive psychology research by demonstrating what it means to be a positive institution in practice.

This case study of the medical technology sector in Czechia places a major focus on the position of Czech firms, particularly SMEs, in global production networks and their internationalization. The medical technology (MedTech) industry is on the rise in Czechia, although in relative terms it is part of a relatively less important category. Three types of MedTech firms have been identified in Czechia: branches of TNCs, mostly domestically-owned innovative SMEs, and local SMEs focusing on low-value production. Despite there being several innovative and successful firms, production is dominated by low-value disposables and medical and surgical products. Apart from exports, other forms of internationalization are rare and occur mostly among a number of innovative firms. With a few exceptions, production facilities are established in neighboring post-communist countries. The low levels of internationalization are mostly related to the nature of local SMEs as well as the limited ambitions of local firms. With more sophisticated products Czech SMEs could focus more on Eastern European countries outside the EU, where Czechia has historical economic ties and the regulatory requirements are likely to be less strict. An industry move towards connected health solutions is also an opportunity for start-ups focusing on health applications.

Art history has asserted the idea that Pre-Raphaelitism is a matter of artistic individualities, missing to regard it as a particularity of a series of works. Accordingly, the appellation came to encompass the whole range of works belonging to the Pre-Raphaelite artists, for reasons extrinsic to artistic analysis, such as the mere fact that, for instance, those artists belonged, at a certain moment in their lives, to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. With these in view, it is worth mentioning that the early members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood either developed artistic practices that were no longer congruent with the notion of Pre-Raphaelitism, at least, in the case of Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, or repeated themes that had their origins in the period of the early period of the Brotherhood, in the case of William Holman Hunt. Meanwhile, Pre-Raphaelitism may also be considered an all-pervasive characteristic of the work of a large number of artists, who practiced the style, although did not embrace a permanent Pre-Raphaelite identity.

The palace in Krzesimów was built in the classicist style at the beginning of 19th century. The building is the part of the palace-park complex entered into the register of monuments because of its historical, aesthetical and landscape values. From 1970s, it is the headquarters of a social welfare home. Over the years, this function enforced many changes in the functional layout of the building to adapt it to the needs of people with various types and levels of disability. Despite many minor renovations and modifi cations, the palace didn’t undergo complete overhaul, which would greatly improve the technical condition of the original fabric. This aim of article is to analyse introduced functional changes, which were supposed to facilitate the use of the building by the handicapped, and to consider what actions must be undertaken in order to improve its technical condition. The authors of the paper underline the need to start renovation works on the basis of the archive documentation, as well as conducted survey and research of its current technical condition.

Making a Living: How Middle-Class Couples in Warsaw Start and Practice a Household

This article is a study of the domestic monetary and financial life of young middle-class couples in Warsaw, Poland, and its suburbs. We use ethnographic evidence presented as case studies to illuminate the practices in which our interlocutors actively appropriate, mobilize, and transform money and finance to pursue moral visions of the good life. The article focuses on the household understood in processual terms of ongoing negotiations between moral and market dimensions. The first section is focused on the ways in which young couples perform relational work aimed at achieving or maintaining moral order. Couples match the diverse possible uses of money at home to their changing notions of the kind of couple they are or wish to become. The second section proceeds from the observation of a widening gap between rising middle-class aspirations and economic possibilities in contemporary Poland and explores the practices of negotiating various forms of assistance from parental households. The third and final section argues that the incursion of technologies into domestic life means that artifacts like software or digital banking increasingly materialize and mediate morality and thus actively contribute to the shaping of the household as a project of a good life.
