This study wants to give proof of the close connection between army policy and the questions of authority leading to the outbreak of World War I. How did the Austro-Hungarian Empire start the war? How well -prepared for war was the army of the Monarchy in 1914? How did the military preparedness affect the length of the war? What caused the neglect of the Austro-Hungarian army before the Great War? Did the High Command of the Austro-Hungarian Army have any choice between supporting the war or rejecting the conflict?

In this lecture, I would like to summarize the circumstances of the fall of the Austro-Hungarian chief of staff, Field-Marshal Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf in 1917. Conrad (1852–1925) was chief of staff from 1906 to 1911, and then again from 1912 to 1917. He was the longest serving chief of staff on either side during the war. His memoirs and records are an obvious, if poorly known source of the Great War. Although he managed to stay in the army, and remained a remarkable commander until the summer of 1918, Conrad’s career was doomed to failure from the point he was removed from his position as chief of staff. His successor, Arthur Arz, could not replace Conrad, but Arz’s personality was more suitable for Emperor Charles I, who wanted to make peace as soon as possible. I am looking for the answers to the following questions: Which events caused the end of his carrier? Why did Emperor Charles choose to remove Conrad?

The leader of bibliotherapy directs the choice of the piece of art work, its interpretation, and its inclusion, in order to achieve a certain effect. The three protagonists of the literary therapy process are the receiver, the literary work and the therapist. The literary works can fulfill more functions. One is the mirror-function, where the receiver recognizes his problems in the art work. Another function is the model function, where he gets a model to follow, or negative model function. The main aim is that the literary work, in one or another way, should dynamize the participants, so that they recognize some message of the art work and find a relation between the story described in it and their own life stories.

Many factors distort teachers’ assessment and evaluation of students in the process of education. These distorting factors include the phenomenon where teachers stigmatize the varieties students bring from home, and, according to my hypothesis, during educational assessment, students’ performance is judged against this variety even in cases where factual knowledge is to be measured. Therefore, in my research, I examine the extent to which students’ vernaculars influence the validity of the evaluation and teachers’ attitudes in situations when teachers intend to measure the students’ factual knowledge in oral production. However, traditional research methods are inadequate for this measure – consequently, a partially new approach is required.The method requires teachers to evaluate, based on various factors, the oral test versions of six short teaching material parts. The questions may be divided into two main groups: those related to the actual test performance and to students’ personalities. The answers vary along three dimensions: (1) standardization (standard or non-standard), (2) code (restricted or elaborated), and (3) information content (100% or 60%).In this paper, I introduce this method briefly and the methodological consequences of the pilot study and also the partial results of the currently running research that uses this method.

Purpose: M4 metro line has been the biggest transport infrastructure project in Budapest in thepast decades. Taking into consideration the size and importance of the project, scientificliterature owes the evaluation of its economic impacts yet. This paper seeks to address this needwith the exploration of the impact of the new metro line on real estate prices. Design/methodology/approach: To assess the economic effect of the M4 projects on the valueof nearby properties, the method of counterfactual impact evaluation was combined withmeasuring the utility increase with the change of property prices. The research sample coversten subway stations and more than 25.000 dwellings in five districts of Budapest, the analysiswas made for the 2007-2015 period. // Findings: When examining the nearby properties at the M4 metro line stations in Budapest, wehave found mixed results for the property prices. The new stations exert a positive effect onlyin those areas which were not connected directly to the existing underground lines. // Research/practical implications: I is worth to consider using these results when adoptinga decision on further directions of transport development in Budapest. Nevertheless there isroom for future research focused on the sophistication of distance measurement, the quality ofthe apartments and the examination of other, especially private development processes besidesthe metro investment. // Originality/value: The paper presents original research in the field of economic effects of theM4 subway project. As it has been shown in the case of the M4 line, several stations have failedto generate additional economic value. This information is most useful for the planning of futuretransport infrastructure projects.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION BRIDGING THE LINGUISTIC BARRIER BETWEEN CULTURES

The question that in multilingual regions (such as the case of Romanian and Hungarian people in Transylvania) which ethnic group should learn the language and the culture of the other has proved to be an outstandingly tough one. These quarrels usually turn into an unnecessary demonstration of force – but this is not what I am going to discuss. It is a well-known fact that most of communication (about 65–70%) is non-verbal. Only 30–38% of communication is verbal, and even that is paralinguistic (accent, intonation, inflection, tonality). We need nothing else than the speaker’s voice to find out his/her gender, character, age, and dialect. Only 7% of communication is found in the meaning of words. Taking these facts into account, it is odd that we do not really bother with non-verbal communication and its opportunities, which could solve a tremendous amount of problems. In some situations, we are successfully handling non-verbal communication, in others, we are not. When can we and when can we not handle information using nothing else than metacommunication? When can we replace the verbal with the non-verbal? This work tries to give answers to these questions.

THE LIMES ON THE DANUBE AND THE CARPATHIAN BASIN

The Pannons living on the southern part of the later Roman province of Pannonia came in touch with Roman culture already towards the end of the Republic. The Celtic tribes living north of them have never organized themselves into a unified state, which facilitated the Roman occupation of the territories up to the Danube. The new province, though much less advanced than the territories occupied earlier by the Empire, due to a fast and deeply penetrating process of Romanization quickly caught up with the rest as evidenced by the linguistic and literary skills and the knowledge of mythology found on inscriptions and on products of material art. The limes not simply separated the Empire from the Barbarian territories, but also helped interaction. On its Pannonian section the Romans had the closest contacts with the Quad Kingdom. Ruins of Roman villa shave been unearthed in the valleys of the Vag and Morva rivers, which were built by the Romans to the Quad princes in return for their cooperation. Peaceful Romanization and the policy of allying with the neighbours were part of a Roman strategy without which the Roman Empire would not have been able to maintain its sway over large territories for several centuries.

The author aims at the presentation of the Szeklers' attitude to the Dacian and Roman history and to the principle of the Dacian-Roman continuity (in Romania). Important Dacian-Roman occurrences in Szeklers' Land are presented. The author briefly sketches what damages the aggressive and propagandistic history writing had brought on in the appreciation of these two cultures before 1989. The negative attitude towards this matter is being strongly presented in our days.
