Chaotic and rather mixed-up as it is, the Serbian society is a product of the actual government’s unwillingness and inability to take stock of the past and thus establish a link with reality – the reality that makes a part of contemporary global trends Serbia distinguishes not. With Montenegro’s independence and the solution of the Kosovo issue at hand, Serbia will get its borders at long last. However, she still has to come to grips with key problems if she wants to become a modern state. By sticking to the same pattern – and thus disclosing its frustration more than anything else nowadays – the government fuels Serbian radicalism that will mushroom as long as Serbia remains an undefined state. Premier Kostunica’s communication with the world more and more sounds like Slobodan Milosevic’s discourse. So he messaged the European Union with rather bitter hostility that “the policy of permanent conditioning was utterly wrong” for its outcomes had been nothing but negative up to now. As it seems, Vojislav Kostunica has not realized that the EU is a club with clear standards and tenets, and that any new membership implies that a state has endorsed its value system...

East Slavonia is a region with a recognisable agrarian tradition and a culture specific to itself, in which religion has had great importance. Concretely, through a long period of history, Roman Catholicism was the most extensive confession and it has left the deepest traces in the spirituality, and also in the daily life of the area. Despite a dynamic past, frequent changes of states and rulers, penetration of Islam and Eastern Orthodoxy and a large number of other religious communities, Catholicism remained dominant in terms of numbers of adherents and also in regard to its influence on social processes in Slavonia and Baranja. The new historical reality in Croatia emphasised even more this presence of Catholicism. This paper studies the development and proportions of the Roman Catholic population in relation to the Eastern Orthodox and other communities in the example of six cities in Slavonia and Baranja.

Reports about war crime trials rarely reach the public as feeding the facts about the developments in 1990s to the nation is not a "profitable" business either for policymakers or the media. Of evil grain no good seed can come, goes a saying. In the Balkans too many fruits of evil come from evil grains. In early 1990s when these grains were sowed in the soil fertilized with lunacy and hatred of nationalism and chauvinism...

The article contains a description of manuscript Nr. 276 from the Library of the Serbian Patriarchate, from the XVII c., containing the Book of Job with commentaries. The text appears to present the third translation of the Book of Job, of which only two Bulgarian copies were known to exist so far. A possible genetic relation of ms. Nr. 276 and ms. Nr. 4/14 from Rila Monastery is suggested.

It is known that the western part of Romania was and it continues to be a region with very intense cultural and social contact. In Arad County, the Hungarian, German, Serbian or Jewish Communities have their own publications witch maintain the connection between the members and announce the important news for the internal life of those organisms. We proposed a panoramic view of some publications, parts of the journalistic landscape from this part of the country. Those publications have their place, a necessary and precise one, in the configuration of the regional and national press. The analysis of those publications determines the researcher to conclude that the intense socio-cultural contacts from this region between the different minorities and the Romanian majority influenced the world of the press too. The diversity and permanent evolution of publications is a proof for the intercultural character of this area.

This article aims to present an analysis of the dialogue between Blaže Koneski (1921-1993) and medieval fresco painting, on two levels: 1) the role of fresco painting in Koneski’s poetry through an analysis of two of his emblematic poems (“Angelot na Sveta Sofija”; in English: Hagia Sophia’s Angel, and “Markoviot manastir”; in English: The Monastery of Saint Mark), and 2) the role of medieval fine arts in Blaže Koneski’s nonfiction through an analysis of several of his essays and lectures (“Svetlinata na nashite ochi”; in English: The Light of Our Eyes; “Sovpagjanja”; in English: Coincidences; and “Eden opit”; in English: An Experiment), in which the poet develops his views on literature and key points of his immanent poetics, by examining the relationship between literature and the fine arts.

The duke Kosta Milovanovic Pecanac is one of the important figures of recent Serbian history. A number of works was written on his participation in Serbian guerilla warfare in Macedonia, Toplice Uprising and the Second World War. However, his activities from the end of the First World War until August 1919, when he gave a statement to the Board of Inquiry of the People’s Assembly on his role in Toplice Uprising, remained unknown. The duke and the small unit of his chetnik troops were still engaged in maintaining order in Metohija. Their unresolved status, as well as the public appearances of the duke contributed to the idea in the ruling military and civilian circles that the unit should be disbanded.

The chrysobulls issued by the Bulgarian emperor Constantine Tich (1238), and by the Serbian king Milutin (1299) authenticated all the estates and privileges of the St. George monastery near Skopje. From these chrysobulls, one learns how, during the XI, XII and XIII centuries, the monastery acquired diverse gifts from some ten Byzantine emperors, four Bulgarian emperors, and four Serbian kings or rulers. Both the Bulgarian and the Serbian documents mention a large number of matching expressions that indicated the obligations of the subjugated peasants (serfs), criminal offences and judicial penalties, and one sees the same titles for the representatives of all local authorities. Greek and Slav words were used as special terms. It was attested a long time ago that the Greek expressions originated in Byzantium and that they were taken from the rich Byzantine terminology. All of this occurred when Skopje and its vicinity were under stable Byzantine rule in the course of the decades and centuries, and, more substantially, when it was an integral part of the large Byzantine thema of Bulgaria. The case is different where Slav terms are concerned. They originated within the borders of the Bulgarian or the Serbian state, or they may have come into being as the Slav translation of some Greek expressions. The presence of Greek and Slav terms in the Bulgarian and the Serbian documents did not escape the notice of scholars and they have succeeded in accurately explaining most of them. Still, there are no adequate interpretations for some terms, and the inaccurate explanations given for a number of expressions have nonetheless become accepted in professional literature.

In the XIX century, Macedonian towns experienced a transformation. They increasingly acquired new “modern” architecture. Strong, solid and quality objects were built of stone, bricks and iron, with a functional and aesthetic exterior idea. Paved streets and squares were built, copying the European model of centres of important events. The outward appearance of structures in bigger settlements altered when houses made of timber, clay bricks and mud would be replaced by new, richer looking houses. By the end of the XIX century, initiatives emerged to implement plans for the improvement of hygienic and health conditions in bigger towns. They were often partially realized. The main reason behind this were the poor living condi- tions, a low health culture, insufficient nutrition, hard and exhausting work, economic conditions, etc. Outbreaks of cholera, smallpox, malaria, hepatitis, dysentery and other infectious diseases often developed and in huge proportions even at the beginning of the XX century.

The survey presented here shows how the German literary identity gradually took shape over more than four centuries, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempt to find new ways of expression. It is difficult to provide exact dates for the Old period, due to the relatively small number of textual sources available, but it is generally accepted that the centuries from 800 to 1100 were the highpoint of Old German literary activity. Of all the pagan poetry hardly anything has survived. The famous „Hildebrandslied“, an epic fragment narrating an episode of the Dietrich saga - the tragic combat between father and son -- was written down after 800 by two monks of Fulda, on the covers of a theological manuscript. In this article light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed. Each individual work opens up intertextual „chasms” which led to digressions into the history of ideas. The result is a multi-faceted panorama, offering many insights into the mentality of texts and their socio-cultural contexts.

The text is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Correspondent member of BAS, ScD. Rumyana Radkova, a prominent researcher of Bulgarian Revival. The scientific biography of the researcher is briefly presented and a concise historiographical overview of the most significant of her works is made. For a better presentation of her scientific works, parallels with works of artists have been used: the works devoted to historical and geographical objects are compared with landscapes, biographical works with portraits of individual national revivalists, and the research on social groups with collective portrait compositions.
