Review of Grzegorz Niziołek’s book Ciało i słowo. Szkice o teatrze Tadeusza Różewicza [‘The Body and the Word. Sketches on Tadeusz Różewicz’s literary output’] (Wydawnictwo Literackie publishers, Cracow, 2004). The book attempts at taking a comprehensive glance on the Różewicz output as a playwright. The key to a conceptual regard to these plays is the categories of the Body and the Word, being of crucial import to the poet. The monograph’s author consistently proves to us how inseparable they are whilst analysing their mutual relations across Różewicz’s texts. As strongly emphasised by the reviewer, the book’s author has embarked on an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the plays, studying their form, possible readings, and ways of getting delivered on stage.

Review of Włodzimierz Bolecki’s book Inna krytyka [‘A Different Criticism’] (Universitas publishers, Cracow, 2006). The reviewer draws the reader’s attention to the character of this new book by the illustrious literature historian and critic, proving so different from this author’s previous releases. The diversity of concepts and subjects is emphasised, with special attention paid to Polish transformations of the recent two decades, as regards both social awareness and culture (literary and other), having been inspired by political events related to the political-system transition. Emphasis is also put on the book’s colourful style, tinted with polemical passion, or even irony, at times – albeit always remaining full of wise reflection.

Review of Dorota Masłowska’s fiction book Paw królowej [‘The Queen’s Peacock’], Lampa i Iskra Boża publishers, Warszawa 2005. The reviewer draws our attention to a specific stylistics of this piece of prose by Masłowska, approaching such a style of writing as a distinct sign of the author’s individuality, in the sphere of both form and content. Ms. Masłowska skilfully sneaks out any type of discourse which would like to appropriate her output whilst at the same time expropriate it of the language. She is not willing to fit into a linguistic template that waits prepared for her as a woman, and then, a mother. Her language differs from the one that her environment has at its disposal. And her book is different too, as it continues the linguistic and philosophical discoveries of Witold Gombrowicz’s Ferdydurke.

Review of Andrzej Juszczyk’s book Retoryka a poznanie. Powieściopisarstwo Teodora Parnickiego [‘Rhetoric vs. Cognition. Teodor Parnicki’s fiction writing’], (Cracow 2004). The author of this essay emphasises that Mr. Juszczyk’s book is the first attempt, among several existing studies, at a comprehensive discussion of Parnicki’s oeuvre. However, a clearly marked interpretative context is provided in the form of the Derridian concept of ‘signature’, and it is from this standpoint that Mr. Juszczyk reads the Parnicki output, thus reviewing the existing analyses of this author’s writings. As remarked by the reviewer, the book’s author refers to post-structuralist practices of intertextuality and theory of interpretation, as well as rhetoric as a classic and post-modernistic concept – that is, ‘rhetoricality’, as for the latter.
