Presence of students experiencing mental health issues in the academia is not a new phenomenon. The new aspect of this group’s participation is greater visibility of the challenges that the academic community is facing. Challenges that not only raise practical questions related to the teaching process and creation of appropriate procedures at universities, but also task them with inclusion of students with mental health difficulties into the mainstream of academic life. In order to accomplish this task, the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University initiated project „Friendly University” beginning in the 2013/2014 academic year. The initial goal of this project was to establish a friendly learning environment for students experiencing mental health issues. Numerous activities that increased academia’s awareness in terms of such students’ needs were carried out within the project, and at the same time they raised the question of mental hygiene. Project feedback and experiences gathered in subsequent academic years indicate that, despite challenges presented, they can also help to improve quality of academic life for the whole community, as in present form the project also includes work related to promoting mental health in the academia.

The present article discusses two crucial areas of the work of a conductor with a big band type of band: the musical area (the concept and the interpretation-related area) and the extra-musical (organisational) area. It also indicates the substantial role of the competence of the leader in the work with an orchestra as far as the musicianship, the organisation-related skills and interpersonal communication are concerned. The thesis which was put forward in the considerations is the following: at the stage of the particular skills of the band which are acquired (when the comprehension of sheet music is taken for granted), the weight of the directing of a band is shifted to the sphere of other competences of the conductor. The author emphasises the verbal commentaries and the indications contained in sheet music which are crucial for the process of interpretation. He also explains the role and the tasks of the conductor in the context of the art of conducting on the basis of an example furnished by the work with a jazz-profile orchestra (The Gestures of the conductor). The many years of experience of the author with big band-type orchestras, and particularly the activities and the achievements of the Big Band of the Uniwersytet Zielonogórski became a basis for the presentation of the conductor also in the role of an organiser and an educator.

The word “you” used to address the interlocutor covers a wide of social relations in English. The Slavic languages have a wider range of forms, each of which is appropriate in a specific social context. The asymmetry between the languages requires the translators of English texts to interpret the relationship between the speakers and choose only one of a number of possible forms in the target language. The paper analyses the interpretative strategies of translators of A. A. Milne’s “Winnie-the-Pooh” regarding the ways in which the characters address each other and discusses their implications for the target texts.
