Valeriu Anania is right when hesitating to definitely classify the texts from the volume Din spumele mării. Pagini despre religie şi cultură (Out of the Foams of the Sea. Pages on Religion and Culture) (1941-1994; 1995) as they neither are polemical journalism proper, editorials, documentaries, nor are they methodically integrated in his literary work. Eventually, they are an expression of the writer’s effort to communicate with occasional reader in a concise formula, while he reveals to him certain aspects considered to be of perennial not circumstantial importance. This is why the journalistic style is combined with the essayistic one, out of the pages of the volume shapes an extremely interesting biography, which bears the touch specific for all his writings. Out of the Foams of the Sea, a late and unintended compilation of the writer, which renders a prolix, repetitive, redundant, heteroclite and heterogeneous character, remains however a document of real interest. Sandu Frunză sees the value of the volume in the unitary confession of the performance of a “restoring hermeneutics”, thus reuniting the theological dogma and the mythical considerations with the aim of a constant attempt of restoring interpretation of the exhaustive significations of culture seen as a carrier and expression of the sacred. Obviously influenced by Mircea Eliade’s approach, Valeriu Anania shows an effort “… to find significations and symbols full of the archetypal essence capable to render the ritual dimension of man’s passage through he world.

After the glorious reception of Voices of Putna – a key contribution to the genre – Viorel Munteanu makes now a new “offering of sound and letter”, a “different” sort of eulogy for the Orthodox Byzantine monody, meaning to encourage us to embark on the difficult journey of salvation together with the endless train of “pilgrims to Saint Parascheva”. It is, thus, a daring compositional effort that will be spiritually experienced by both its creator and its public, from the first contact with the graceful resonance of the title to the last shimmer of sound at the end of the final scene. If one considers the Orthodox art and its spirit, Viorel Munteanu’s Oratorio for Saint Parascheva is more than a creative act; it is an act of faith, of hope and of love, “a prayer to”, and “joy in”, Jesus Christ; it is living tradition and self-giving truth, by which we partake to one of the most memorable unions of Christian experiences and symbols.

Many commentators argue that Valeriu Anania’s dramaturgy is the most important part of his literary work. The former Metropolitan of Cluj-Napoca introduced himself, in the literary circles of his age, as a dramatic poet. Valeriu Anania’s play uses, as source of inspiration, the Romanian Mythology, or the Holy Bible. Versatile writer, the former Metropolitan of Cluj uses a different register in his play Păhărelul cu nectar (The Glass of Nectar), a drama play for children. Although a clergy, Valeriu Anania accomplishes, as Lucian Vasile Bâgiu argues, a „dissociative reportting to the biblical parable” writing the drama play Hoțul de mărgăritare (The Pearl Thief). The drama play is essentially different from the story told by Jezus and it is based on a complicated conflict – which is similar to that of a novel. The writer pays a lot of interest to the fall of the prodigal son, offering us motives for his (although, bad) choices; the writer also analyses the prodigal son’s weaknesses, he dissects his feelings, putting them into a context. The interventions of Humbaba – the Father’s servant – suggests the Greek and Latin philosophy as a strong vain of inspiration. Humbaba speaks in Latin maxims, and his interventions resemble to the parable speech. Valeriu Anania’s writing suggests a deeper message, a general one, that one needs in his or her life forgiveness and blessing from their parents. Both of Eli’s sons are wrong: the prodigal son (called Eliabar, in Anania’s play), and also his elder brother, Rimon. If Eliabar wastes his fortune in the pleasures of life, Rimon is incapable of observing his father’s pain – sufferance determined by the loss of his younger son. Also, he is always concerned with earning more; besides that, when Eliabar gets home, Rimon scolds his father for forgiving him so easily. The father – Eli – is an admirable character. Kind and forgiving, he is a model for all parents in the world. He is waiting for his sons to return from sin. He patiently keeps on waiting for Eli, being convinced that he would eventually return. The father is the only character without a sinusoidal evolution. He embodies Our Father in Heaven, Who awaits sinners to return to virtue. He is not scolding us, but offering freedom. When we commit errors, He is there, carrying a part of our burden (the burden of our wrong choices), unconditionally giving us His forgiveness. He keeps on waiting for us, with love and devotion. The drama play Hoțul de mărgăritare (The Pearl Thief), published four decades after its writing, is a pleading to argue the importance of parents’ role in one’s life, but also highlighting the role of such virtues as: gentleness, patience, forgiveness – but, above all, the virtue of love – virtues that mankind need to progress. Without love, we are week. Love lifts us. Love makes us human.

The article addresses to romanian biblical scholars preoccupied with the history of biblical translations. We search for the biblical sources (editions and critical editions) of „Anania” translation of the Sacred Text in order to establish the dependence of the authorized versions in Europe and America. The most common francophone editions used by translator was the following: La Bible de Jérusalem (Paris, 1973); La Bible. Traduction Oecuménique (Paris, 1978); La Bible. Traduction par Émile Osty (Paris, 1973). We identify La Bible. Traduction Oecuménique (TOB) as the key one. The most common Anglophone editions used by translator was the following: The Holy Bible. King James Authorized Version (Oxford, 1977); The New Oxford Annotated Bible (Oxford, 1977); Good News Bible (New York, 1978) – with the preeminence of KJV edition. These two biblical translations (TOB and KJV) influenced the Romanian translator in his entire process of translating the original Greek text.

THE TEACHING ABOUT THE HOLY CHURCH IN THE VISION OF METROPOLITAN NICODIM MUNTEANU

In the present study we want to present the teaching of the Metropolitan of Moldavia and Suceava, from the period 1934-1939, Nicodim Munteanu as it is found in his speeches, related to the divine-human institution - the Church, mysteriously founded by the Savior Jesus Christ through the sacrifice His from the cross, and in a visible way at the time of the descent of the Holy Spirit, on Pentecost, when following the sermon of the Holy Apostle Peter, 3000 souls were baptized (Act. Apost. 2, 41). Metropolitan Nicodim Munteanu, a tireless writer and scholar with experience especially in translations, known as a translator of the Bible and numerous works belonging to Russian literature, more than 100, considered that the mission of the Church is not only to sanctify the faithful and their lives, but also to teach them, to pass on knowledge that will also be useful for their temporal life on earth. In his speeches, he made an analogy between everything that the Church preaches, what is found and happens inside it with everything that promotes, is found and happens in the school, the comparisons and connections made by Hierarch Nicodim having the role of emphasized the importance and irreplaceable role of the Church in society and in the lives of believers.

The article reviews the volume entitled “Brăila prin veacuri și în zilele noastre” [Brăila through the ages and nowadays], by means of which th author, Ioan Munteanu, makes an extensive monography of the city and its surroundings. Details of the history of development from the beginnings to the present day are presented, involving all the important aspects of the economy and social-political life of both the city and the county with the same name. The information is up to date, including statistical data illustrating the comprehensive picture of Brăila. The volume is a good guide for historians and for those who wish to document and write down about a city that played an important role in defining Romanian modernity, but which today is suffering a period of decline.
