Two complementary concepts of sustainable development and social economy are almost always discussed separately in the Polish scientific literature. However, projects conducted by the initiatives of social economy, including social enterprises, contribute directly to the objectives of sustainable development in the field of achieving both social and environmental objectives. Aims and tasks included in these two concepts seem to be inseparable. These initiatives are characterised by high innovation in mobilising resources (work, materials) and in identifying development opportunities in the least expected fields. The aim of the article is to relate the literature discussions on the relationship of social economy initiatives with sustainable development objectives (especially in the range of environment resources saving) to Polish conditions. The author shows the specificity of initiatives undertaken in Poland, resulting from both legal and social factors in our country.

The subject of the article is the relationship between the purpose of the implementation of the idea of resource efficient economy and potential models of resource efficient consumption. The paper presents the basic challenges and decision-making of the household on the plane of resource efficient household, and then describes four realistically effective models of resource efficient consumption indicating which results from them for the aim described in the article. The author pays attention to the fact that resource efficient management policy is based on the “narrow” philosophy of sustainable development, abstracting from social issues, which can be the source of some problems in the implementation of this project. This applies in particular to the risk of further pauperization of the poorest consumers.

In this paper, some selected problems related to individual transport behaviour are discussed in the context of activities aimed at sustainable development of transport presented in the EU strategy Europe 2020 and related documents. First, the main causes leading to the need of change in transport behaviour and the related reduction of individual motorisation are discussed. Then, the determinants of behaviour of transport users are analysed. In the last part of the paper, the main directions of EU actions included in the latest EU documents are presented. An attempt is made to briefly asses the expected effectiveness of the initiatives in terms of creating sustainable transport behaviour of individuals.

The article presents an issue of ecoinnovations in municipal economy. Ecological innovations are anlysed in the context of sustainable development. The subject is presented under conditions of Polish municipalities. The article analysis experience and practices undertaken in the capital of the Silesia Beskid Mountains. Bielsko-Biała has had a great success record in terms of ecoinnovations in municipal economy and generally in local sustainable development. It is one of the leaders of changes in this field among other Polish municipalities. The currently undertaken works are mostly directed towards energy efficiency. Nevertheless local policy shows the understanding for the need of integration of economic, social and environmental conditions. It also includes a crucial role of local community. Local development in Bielsko-Biała deserves dissemination and promotion of good practices.
