King Louis I of Hungary founded the chapel in Aachen for Hungarian pilgrims, providing it with relics of Hungarian saints and liturgical equipment. The chapel in the Gothic style was added to the south side of the church. Maintenance and operation of the chapel, as well as supplies for two chaplains, were provided from the surrounding markets, and the land was acquired in cooperation with the Aachen town authorities. The chapel with its equipment and two chaplains was placed in the care of the town and canons in 1370. Pope George XI granted an annual indulgence to all who confessed and visited the chapel. Henry Abbot of Pilis abbot meritoriously contributed to the chapel foundation. His mission referred to negotiations and contractual provision of all relevant matters. The chapel had served its purpose for a few centuries when it burnt down in 1656. Later it was reconstructed in the Baroque style.

The study is devoted to tracing the officials in the administration of the County of Spiš: assessors, deputy reeves, ordinary reeves, deputy fiscals, fiscals, tax collectors, auditors, treasurers, deputy notaries, notaries and deputy sheriffs. For each post, the period of its existence and its standard or specific position in the framework of county administration in Hungary are analysed. Tracing the length of terms of office, whether there were age limits for particular functions, whether there was career progression and which families held individual offices in the given period is an important part of the text.

Epigrafik Belgeler ve Antik Edebi Eserler Işığında Magnesia ad Sipylum

Magnesia ad Sipylum is a Lydian City established on the northern foothills of Mount Sipylos (Spil/Manisa), within the borders of the modern Province of Manisa. Topographically, the city overlooks the fertile Gediz Plain irrigated by the Hermos (Gediz) River. Its location on the intersection of ancient itineraries gives the city commercial and strategic importance. Magnesia, located about 32 km northeast of Smyrna (Izmir), has had good relations with this neighboring city. This relation is also documented by an epigraphic inscription which contains the decree of sympoliteia between the two cities, dated to 243 BC. A few archaeological remains and epigraphic documents have survived from the ancient city. Further the information of the city is acquired by the accounts of ancient writers. This study aims to present current information on Magnesia ad Sipylum in terms of historical-geography and socio-cultural aspects within the possibilities provided by epigraphic documents and ancient literary works.

1876 Yılında Edirne Vilayeti’ndeki Asayiş Problemleri (826 Numaralı Ayniyat Defteri Verilerine Göre)

Ayniyat notebooks are the notebooks where the writings sent from Sadaret in the XIXth century to the provincial administrators, ministries and other authorities were recorded exactly. There are registries about the administrative, financial, military, legal, social and other different matters in these notebooks. The main aim of this study is to determine public order problems which were reflected in the documents sent by Sadaret to the Edirne province in 1876 and are in the 826 numbered Ayniyat notebook. The documents in this notebook contain short letters sent to the province. In the letters, to the provincial administrators were informed about what they should do in front of complaints and requests of the public. The documents determined from the notebook on public order problems are about pillage, extortion, robbery, murder, damaging the crop and property, settling on someone else's property by force, land and pasture conflicts. The behavior of the administrators in provinces and state in the face of public complaints about these events that occurred in 1876 and earlier were scrutinized in the context of the documents in the notebook.

1887 Nüfus Sayımına Göre Bulgaristan Burgaz İlinde Etnik Yapının Mekânsal Dağılımı

The results of the census of 1887 which was published in 1888 by the smallest settlements provide an understanding of the religion, language and to some extent the migration characteristics of the population during the transition from Turkish authority to Bulgarian dominance. The aim of this study is to show the spatial distribution of these characteristics by mapping them in the possible smallest settlement. As a result, it has been seen that the Turks and Muslims have been concentrated mostly to the northern borders of the province especially where the Deli Kamçık strait connects Burgaz to Varna and is an important chokepoint to the “Sağ Kol” while the Orthodox Greeks are in majority at the most of the coastal cities such as Sozopol, Burgaz, Anhialo and Mesemvri. Bulgarian Orthodox population is located in the southern part of the province while to the north gradually Bulgarian coexists with the Turkish population.

LOCALNESS, IDENTITY, AND THE HISTORIC CITY. NEW ELITES IN THE AUTONOMOUS GALICIAN LVIV

This article explores the urban elites of Lviv during its autonomous era under Habsburg rule. The elites included not only state and municipal officials but also ‘self-proclaimed’ groups of local patriots, whose main point of reference was their city and maintaining its respectability. The issue of the preservation of secular monuments in the city (mainly the Old Town) is dealt with, as well as the history of selected grassroots associations, like the Society of the Friends of Old Lviv and the Society for the Embellishment of the City of Lviv and Its Surroundings. The author argues that by investigating the institutions which took care of the physical space of the city and its buildings, it is possible to delve into the identity of the elites in question. He further argues that it was not only the imperial and national identity that was reflected in the sources, but also a purely local one, which points to the issue of localness as an important category of research.

THE ‘KINDRED CIRCLE’ OF VILLAGE MAYORS IN THE HABSBURG MONARCHY AND THE EXAMPLE OF CIESZYN SILESIA, 1864–1918

In Cieszyn Silesia (the eastern part of the crownland of Austrian Silesia) from the time local government was introduced in 1864 until 1918 it is possible to identify 1332 village mayors (German: Gemeindevorsteher; Polish: wójt; Czech: starosta). Of these, at least 1006 (almost 76 per cent) had another village mayor in Cieszyn Silesia in their ‘kindred circle’, which includes second-degree relatives according to canonical computation, as well as witnesses at weddings and baptisms of their closest family (children, parents, siblings). The uninterrupted lineage of these types of relationships connected at least 875 village mayors, or 66 percent of all those known. Thus the partial democratisation at the level of local self-government led to a kind of oligarchy, with the position of the village head being assumed by wealthy peasant families who all had connections to one another. Outside of the ‘kindred circle’, there were the factory owners and officials of archdukes and counts, who took the position of village mayor in industrialised areas, as well as a few Jewish village mayors and probably the majority of village mayors from the mountain villages.

SLOVENIAN ELITES IN TRIESTE AND THEIR ROLE IN THE FORMATION OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES

This text discusses the formation of Slovenian local elites in Trieste in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A significant part of the analysis presented here concerns the habitus of the elite and the attitudes expressed through the significance they attached to being members of the elite. Drawing on the discourses presented in the Slovenian and Croatian press published in Trieste, as well as biographical sources, this article outlines the vision of society held by the political leaders of the local community. It emphasises how the elites gave expression to their habitus in the public sphere through a variety of institutional activities. I argue that the life of the Slovenian politician and social activist Ivan Nabergoj, a figure central to this text, constitutes an ideal-type committed biography. In conclusion, I address the relationship between the elites and the surrounding community, arguing that elites were representatives of the community while also determining the forms of group belonging by their shaping of mechanisms of consolidation. In this article, I also consider the particularities of the political conditions of Slovenians living in the Slavic-Italian borderlands.

OLD DUBROVNIK, YOUNG SERBIA AND VAGUE CROATIA. MENTAL MAPS IN THE SERB-CATHOLIC IMAGINATION IN DUBROVNIK

This article describes the experience of the community of Serb-Catholics living in Dubrovnik in the early twentieth century. It is based primarily on an investigation of the literary and cultural periodical Srdj (1902–08). This study focuses, firstly, on the conceptual ambivalence resulting from efforts to apply linguistic criteria to determine Serbian identity and, secondly, on the efforts to construct a mental map that would serve projections of Serbian symbolic territory. While the presence of the Serb-Catholic milieu in the city was short-lived (from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War), it nevertheless left traces on the urban landscape that typified the ambivalent formation of national identity along religious lines, as Croatians were associated with Catholicism and Serbs with Orthodoxy.

Demetrios’ politics aimed at establishing Ohrid as one of the most important ecclesiastical centers in Europe’s Orthodox Church. These ambitions were tied to the political destiny of the Despotate of Epirus; its downfall buried the ambitions of Demetrios. But despite the radical political changes during that time, Ohrid retained its great importance for the Orthodox Church in Southeastern Europe in the following centuries.

Konstantin Simeonov Petkanov was a public teacher, public figure and activist of the Dobrudzha Оrganization from 1914 until its disbandment in 1942. In the border villages of Tsar Samuil, Zavet and Brăshlen, he built illegal information channels, involved people in the Dobrudzha organization, collected membership fees and free donations, and helped refugees to accommodate and have land. Supporter of the Internal Dobrudzha Revolutionary Organization. He maintained constant contact with the prominent Dobrudzha leaders Asparuh Aydemirski, Angel Stoyanov and Stefan Simeonov.

The present report covers the work consisting in compiling biographies of the clergy of the Kielce diocese for the Dictionary of Polish Catholic Theologians. The research began in the 1970s and was published in the form of individual volumes of the dictionary. The first volume was published in 1981. In 2019, the 10th and latest volume was published. Biographies of the clergy from the period of 19th – 21st century were usually prepared by priests belonging to the Kielce scientific community and associated with the Kielce Seminary. In the Middle Ages and in modern times, the area belonging now to the Kielce diocese was part of the Krakow diocese and the Gniezno archdiocese. Biographies of the clergy working in the diocese at that time were usually drawn up by priests not connected with the theological environment active in Kielce. Thanks to the Dictionary, the majority of church writers from the Kielce area who have left behind any publications of scientific value have well documented biographies consisting of a scientific biography supported by primary and secondary sources.

„Jędrna prawda o utuczonych wieprzach”. Miejsce i rola Gdańska w Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów w ocenie Władysława Konopczyńskiego

This article is devoted to Władysław Konopczyński (1880–1952), one of the most distinguished Polish historians of the twentieth century, and his view of the role of Gdańsk – the most powerful city in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – in Poland’s history. The historian is shown to have held an ambivalent view of the city’s role in Polish history. Stressing the importance of Poland’s access to the sea and appreciating the city’s collaboration with the rest of the country, Konopczyński criticised what he considered to have been the symptoms of the city’s egoism.
