This study tries to shed light on the conflict between the Islamic waqf administration in Jerusalem and the Christian populations of Bethlehem and Beit Jala over the land ownership in these two cities. This conflict emerged in the mid-twentieth century after these people refused to acknowledge that the land in their possession was an Islamic waqf and not private property. The present study attempts to shed light on this legal issue by tracing the historical roots of this conflict and up to the time it was taken to the court for a decision. The main question in this research is: What were the origins of the dispute between the two parties that broke out at this particular time? Why did it not break out before this date? Did the difference in religion have a role in this conflict? Or was it a matter of personal and material interests?

The author here relates, in part, the history of the European Social Fund’s (ESA in the period 2000–2006) evaluation process, and also covers, in part, the culture, models and patterns of an international evaluation team. As a contribution to the general aims of the European Commission, ESA mobilized the labour market of Europe – and 8–10 million workers and students moved, mainly from East to West, to seek out new opportunities for work and study. This is one of the biggest social innovations in the history of the European Union, one which was caused by labour market forces (Eastern unemployment, Western levels of income). The author, whilst dealing with further causes of the great migration, additionally mentions the new and rapid developments in communications (ICT, transportation). One great experience noted from the fact of international cooperation in evaluating ESA was the importance of cultural differences among participant evaluators. While the English partner represented professionalism and high-level technical training, Italians brought ideological preparedness to such cooperative work; and while the Spanish partner had great experience in Hispanic evaluations, a small but forceful German team contributed its specifically German cultural background to the international task. The Hungarian team was in an intermediary position amid these different evaluation cultures.

Finally, István Polónyi writes about the ideological background of economic theories in education policy in his essay entitled The Economic Ideologies of Education and Education Policy. He believes that issues of education efficiency and quality assurances are connected with globalization – and are a consequence of the predominance of economics. The author argues that economic ideologies barely make an impact on education in schools, though education policy tends to adopt and redefine the language and goals of economic and fiscal policies.

The article discusses the philosophical rootedness of the economic analysis of law. Utilitarianism is identified as the main source of inspiration for the law and economics movement. A brief account of the most important issues that utilitarianism raises is given. A detailed analysis of the complex relationship between utilitarianism and wealth-maximisation is carried out. The affinities and the differences between the two standpoints are specified. The main disparity, i.e. the status of both maximisation precepts is highlighted. The incoherence of R. Posner’s position including his pragmatic argument for wealth maximisation and his commitment to the thesis about ethical convergence is pointed out.

Law & economics scholars have claimed, from the very beginning of the movement, that their ambition has been to make studies of law more scientific. The neoclassical approach in economic analysis of law is based on the assumption that rationality of people acting in legal contexts can be characterized in the same ways as rationality of homines economici. However, emergence of behavioral economics and attempts to apply it to analysis of law by some law & economics scholars resulted in critical revising the achievements of neoclassical approach. The so called behavioral law & economics criticizes the neoclassical approach on the basis of experiments, which test hypotheses derived from neoclassical theories. Outcomes of those experiments allow to draw conclusion that in many (legal) contexts people don’t behave in accordance with predictions based on neoclassical models. Behavioral law & economics scholars argue that neoclassical theories are grounded on so highly unrealistic assumptions that in many situations they cannot offer predictions of human behavior. I distinguish three main issues that are discussed: philosophical, methodological and normative ones. I formulate critical comments on the raised arguments and final general remarks concerning possibility of making legal studies more scientific, as well as application of economics to studies on law.

The author, using the cathegory of “democratic turn” proposed by the British researcher Cristina Flesher Fominaya, makes the report a starting point for reflecting on the relationship between cultural practices and the quality of democracy conceived in this case as the subjective self-determination of the local community. The indicators of good management help to answer the following questions: How well the company uses its resources? Is there a good coordination between the efforts of people and units involved in the joint task? Are there system effects (synergies)? What is the degree of advancement/ organization of the system? With competitiveness on the rise and conditions for the functioning of modern organisations changing rapidly, it has become more and more important to recruit and retain employees who, in addition to being highly competent, will also be ready to identify with the goals and mission of the organisation. An important factor in this respect is employees having a sense of influence on the organisation. The aim of the article is to present and discuss the results of research on the relationship between the sense of influence and readiness of employees to engage in work and their commitment to the organisation. Two ranges of the sense of influence at work were distinguished. The first involved the possibility of submitting one’s own innovative proposals to improve the operational processes while the second consisted in entrusting employees with a certain scope of autonomy at the workplace. The results confirmed a correlation between the sense of influence and commitment in its affective and normative aspects. At the same time, it was found that experiencing a sense of influence on one or the other level influences one’s commitment to the organisation to a similar degree.
