Frame Semantics And Verbs Of Motion. The Case of Enter And Go Into. A Corpus-Based Study

The article studies the verbs enter and go into in a corpus of technical texts on a comparative basis. We apply the methodology of Frame semantics with the purpose of showing foreign learners of English an indicative characteristic of the language, i.e. the various constructions, in which enter and go into participate, as well as the semantic network of their distinctive meanings. In this research we rely on the usage-based approach and provide evidence for the importance of context in the semantic analysis and frame profiling. The analysis contributes to constructing a theoretically and empirically coherent approach to technical corpus data and investigating its specificities to help students acquire English constructions and use them efficiently and effortlessly in written and spoken communication.

Перцепција стварности употребом температурних придевских лексема хладан у српском и холодный у руском језику

The paper discusses two adjectives whose semantic meaning relates to temperature – hladan in Serbian and holodnyj in Russian. The adjectives discussed are the most dominant representatives of the lexemes that contain semantic component ‘temperature under average’, which is the reason why they are analyzed in more detail. The aim of this paper is therefore to determine whether the temperature value of adjectives hladan and holodnyj is always negatively perceived, or their perception can vary depending on the context.

An Attempt At A Typological Investigation Of The Ice Motif As A Symbol Of Death

It is based on a restricted corpus, yet the survey made proves the recurrent meaning of ice to be a symbol of death and its various other connotations – inherently associated with the primal meaning revealing it in different aspects in the works to be analyzed.

Valency Constructions At Work: A Case Study

This is a corpus-driven analysis which aims at highlighting the complex behavior of V+eye(s) collocation (1372 occurrences) drawn from the BNC, more specifically from Kilgarriff’s WordSketch of the lemma EYE. Statistical scores are used to identify patterns of use in relation to relative frequency. As a result, some monovalent, divalent, and trivalent valency constructions are described. Such observations have important implications both for future research of language use as well as for foreign language learning and teaching.

Phrasal Verbs With Off May Not Be Hard To Pull Off

This article studies the phrasal verbs (PV) widely used in contemporary English . They are challenging to foreign language learners not only because they are numerous but also with their multiple meanings. Polysemous phrasal verbs are seen from a new perspective with the development of cognitive linguistics. Researchers apply the cognitive principles to arrange them in systematic groups and to prove that their meanings are not randomly chosen but motivated. The present study focuses on phrasal verbs with OFF and organizes their meanings in a radial network related to one core, invariant meaning. The particle encodes specific conceptualizations of spatial relations non-native speakers of English are unaware of. The article provides some suggestions to teaching PVs using a cognitive-based approach to help EFL learners memorize phrasal verbs more efficiently.

Understanding Name-Based Neologisms

The article discusses some issues and good practices in teacher collaboration, lesson planning and team teaching in different CLIL contexts. The discussion is based on lesson plan analysis and lesson observations conducted in four European countries under an Erasmus+ project.

Teaching Conversational Implicature To Adult Language Learners

Despite the widely-held belief that second/foreign language acquisition takes place more effortlessly in the early age, this paper aims to research the impact of the age factor in this process and to find out what adjustments need to be made in the teaching environment in order to optimize the second/foreign language acquisition for adult learners of English. The paper will address the topic of teaching particularized conversational implicature through the activity attached, because it gives a real example of what it means to know all the words of what one hears, but not to be prepared to respond in a socially acceptable manner. The aim of this paper is to equip adult learners with the linguistic formula “Not + very + positive adjective” that will help them overcome awkward situations that inhibit their engagement in communication, on the one hand, and, on the other, to prompt teachers to consider factors such as motivation, self-confidence and fixed-mindset that may considerably change the desired outcomes.

A Gender-Based Study Of Apology Speech Acts In British And Bulgarian Tv Series

The major aim of this paper is to examine the way Bulgarian men and women apologize and investigate whether they exhibit differences with respect to the apologetic behavior they adopt in comparison to British male and female native speakers. The article focuses on the speech act of apologizing and it draws on two linguistic datasets for its analysis: six episodes from a British TV series Scott & Bailey and six episodes of comparable data from Glasshome, a Bulgarian TV series. Extracts of data containing apology speech acts in both corpora are compared qualitatively and quantitatively and the issues of apology strategy, type of offence, social status and social distance are discussed with respect to gender cultures and politeness.

Speech Situation, Speech Event And Speech Act In The Domain Of Apology Speech Act Pragmatics

The present paper focuses in general on three discourse phenomena in the domain of speech act pragmatics with regard to the functions of language, the structures of the interaction and the relationship between text and context. In particular it dwells on the structure of the speech situation, speech event and speech act with view of their specific characteristics in the area of apologetic communicative acts in English and Bulgarian. It also discusses one basic socio-cultural and linguistic variable that describes the apology speech situation and in part determines the form of successful utterances. Additionally, this variable is presumed to constitute the specific circumstances or situational constraints which the interlocutors in an interaction must be able to identify in order to produce adequate and appropriate communicative acts that conform to them.

Strategies And Techniques In The Translation Of Movie Titles (An English-Russian Comparative Case Study)

The purpose of the present article is to popularize the findings and observations acquired from a corpus-based comparative case study of 200 English-language titles and their officially promoted Russian-language versions. The study observes and analyzes on a comparative basis the strategies and techniques employed in the translation of movie titles in the specific context of English-Russian translation. As a result of the nature of the study and its predominantly qualitative character, the results and observations are not intended to be representative or conclusive, but rather to provide a glance into the process of translation within a specific context, through the prism of a systematic classification of strategies and techniques. Due to volume limitations, the proposed article includes detailed analysis of only 10 titles excerpted from the entire corpus. These examples have been selected by the authors as representative to a large degree of the case study findings.

Analiza imena hidronima u Lašvanskoj dolini

The Paper deals with the theoretical definition of hydronyms, hydronymy and hydronomastics. The mentioned terms are analysed, and about 11 hydronyms from the Lašva Valley have been interpreted. The origin and etymology of those terms are cited. With the hydronym Bílā ikavian jat reflex is recorded. Some hydronyms are of an unknown origin, e.g. the hydronym Ilomska. The Lašva Valley is actually the valley of the Lašva River, so geographically, it is a part of central Bosnia. Historically, in that area there was a medieval parish, and today it includes the towns of Vitez, Travnik, Novi Travnik and Busovača.

Anthology of Bosniak Oral Lyric Poetry by Munib Maglajlić. The linguistic expression of the sevdalinka can be researched on the phonological-phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and semantic level. The sevdalinka showcases folk elements the best because it is raised by people and lives with people. Sensuality and tragedies of life/humans are also emphasized. However, the most important task of the sevdalinka is the expression and transference of emotions and feelings that are far too complex to be presented by the basic conversation. The language of the sevdalinka is a folk language, the language of the period in which it was emerging. However, observed from contemporary linguistic perspective, this linguistic expression is archaic.

Prilog istraživanju toponimije Lovranšćine: mikrotoponimija Tuliševice

The toponymy of the village Tuliševica territory is examined in this article. Possibilities of several computer databases were used as a preliminary step for the creation of basic corpus of toponyms. These databases allowed the maximum precision in the determination of the toponyms location. The corpus was supplemented by interviews with informants and by the excerpts from literature and archival sources. All toponyms were listed in the alphabetical order and analyzed as separate entries. Toponyms were analyzed at several levels: 1) geographical: every toponym was pinpointed and the area which it names is graphically presented on the toponomastic map; 2) historical: an overview of toponymsoccurence in the primary archival sources (last wills) was given; 3) linguistic: a brief explanation for some toponyms was offered, especially for those originating from the local idiom, and all of them were also accentuated. Considering the extremely poor toponomastic research of the Lovran region, this article aims at filling that gap, but also offers a methodological basis for further similar studies.

L'EXPRESSION DU FUTUR EN ARABE LITTÉRAIRE ET EN ARABE TUNISIEN

This article is meant to be a contribution to the study of the future in natural languages. It aims to describe the future in literary (classical) Arabic as well as Tunisian Arabic. In fact, one of the characteristics of both literary (standard) and spoken varieties of Arabic is the lack of a prototypical future. Nevertheless they have a host of linguistic tools (markers) which make it possible to express “particular futures” signalling imminence, intention, desire, etc.After presenting the future in literary Arabic through examples borrowed from the quran, we will review the linguistic means in the Tunisian dialect to express this temporal form. Then, focus will be laid on a grammaticalised form which is typical of Tunisian Arabic, namely preverbal particle (prefix) “bāŝ”, phonetic reduction of the active participle “māŝi” which express near future. We will also show that the grammaticalisation process in the spoken varieties of Arabic signals (proves) the existence of linguistic universals that relate to cognitive representations.
