Translating Romanian Modern Fairy Tales

At the beginning of the new millennium, the fairy tale genre still preserves its authenticity and freshness appealing to children all over the world. Inspired by traditional folk tales, contemporary writers for young target readership face the dilemma whether to maintain the already consecrated patterns and elements of cultural specificity or to innovate and adapt their literary texts in order to answer the expectations and demands of a different audience. As a consequence, this paper aims at a thorough analysis of Petre Crăciun‘s Basme (Fairy Tales) (2013) and Basme pentru familia mea (Fairy Tales for My Family) (2014) in which the Romanian author purports to ingenuously combine old and new elements frequently tackled from an ironical and practical perspective. Nevertheless, the influence of the original folk tales determines the use of a regional and popular language whose possible translation into English may cause problems and difficulties to be dealt with in the second part of this paper.

Markers of Stereotyped Communication

Stereotipurile de comunicare sunt caracteristice atât persoanelor cât comunităţilor şi funcţiile pe care acest tip de comunicare le poate îndeplini sunt fie legate de modul de organizare al discursului fie de construcţia categoriilor de gen, vârstă sau identitate socială. Stereotipurile pot fi cosiderate, uneori, elemente care marchează apatenenţa la un anumit grup, statut sau gen iar studierea mecanismelor de formare şi proliferare ale acestora constituie întotdeauna o provocare. Discuţia stereotipurilor de comunicare ar trebui să graviteze în jurul unor aspecte precum vorbire specifică unui grup, folosire conştientă sau inconştientă a automatismelor de limbaj şi influenţa contextului social asupra dobândirii abilităţilor conversaţionale. Comunicarea stereotipică poate fi considerată o ideologie lingvistică propagată (conştient sau inconştient) de către vorbitori atăt in conversaţii uzuale cât şi în comunicarea în cadru institutional. Această lucrare are ca scop descoperirea elementelor care indică existenţa unei comunicări streotipe în conversaţia uzuală, naraţiuni şi interviuri.

Vasile Lovinescu's Writings. Notes for a Total Hermeneutics

Vasile Lovinescu's creation is unique in the context of the Romanian culture. He proposes a new formula, an original one. His work is a unique exercise of analysis and interpretation based on an algorithm, which may be applied apply both to literature, iconography and heraldry: polarization around the symbol, confirming elements of mystery and confirmation of the steps of initiation. All his writings are based on the emphasizing a deep spirituality, according to traditional doctrine, in order to prove that the Romanian cultural space is nothing but a real region that collects unsuspected esoteric messages in it.

Statutul literaturii în sistemul de învăţământ românesc înainte de 1948

After 1948, the Inter-War Romanian educational system changed due to the brutal intrusion of the political factor which structurally modified the literature teaching perspective. The abusive politically-coined pact distorted Spiru Haret’s educational reforms up to the total subjection of literature textbooks to the dominant doctrine. Our study analyses these ideological changes in teaching literature by comparison to the former Inter-War educational system, with a special view on literature textbooks.

The year 1953 marked the end of Stalin’s era, but the damage had been done. Once set in motion, the great mechanism could not be stopped. Romanian literature remains subserviant to socio-political orders. Traduction et intégration culturelle

These two words which form the title of our paper imply one another in the sense that translation remains the only means of cultural integration, the only means to ensure communication between two apparently different systems of thinking, the only means to remake the scales of pre-established values which are classified into inferior and superior values and classified according to influences, consanguinity, interests, etc. Translation offers to every culture a double “citizenship” by its double opening status: discover et be discovered. Our paper deals with some Panait Istrati’s texts, a Romanian writer who translated his own work, in order to analyse how he translated his texts by recreating what he had already written in French.

ROMANUL ROMÂNESC DIN VOIVODINA: TEME ŞI MOTIVE

The beginnings of the Romanian novel in Vojvodina were in the late fifties of the last century. Before this date a novel or even fragments of novels that might be considered the beginning of Romanian novel in Vojvodina had not been published. A literary history of Romanian literature in Vojvodina had not acknowledged the existence of any novels published by other countries before the fifth decade of the last century. This paper presents the most important moments in the evolution of the Romanian novel in Vojvodina from the first fragments published by the magazine “Lumina” in 1952, with an emphasis on the themes and motifs used by the authors in their novels.

THE IDENTITY OF A ROMANIAN-ISRAELI WRITER IN LIGHT OF TRANSCULTURAL THEORY: THE CASE OF VIRGIL DUDA

The article at hand comprises an attempt to answer the question about the identity of Virgil Duda, a recognized and respected in literary circles Romanian writer, who, as an almost 50-year-old artist, decided to leave (together with his family) for Israel – a country whose language and culture were completely foreign to him. These will not be deliberations on the subject of national identity. From amidst many a research field associated with the subject of identity, I have selected cultural space and it is from this perspective that I will look at Virgil Duda and his Israeli-period writing. In the case of this Romanian- Jewish-Israeli artist justified is a rendering of the concepts of cultural character and cultural identity as seen by Wolfgang Welsch and François Jullien.

Arome şi simbol în universul poetic minulescian. O analiză textual-discursivă

The approach proposed through the textual-discursive analysis of some samples selected from Ion Minulescu’s poetic universe (especially the Romanţe [Romances] series) aims at highlighting elements expressed in the world of signs, which conveys different cultural connotations (the study achieves a short history of perfume and the influence of perfume houses on Romanian poetic space: for instance, the line from a poem by Minulescu “Here is why I love Rosine”, which refers directly to the French perfume house Guerlain). The devices employed to express different textual networks (as they are defined in the model of iceberg texts) – networks that may be of an intonational-melodious kind (identified on the level of rhythm, refrain, and so on) or of an intertextual one (realised by means of direct citation or indirect allusions) – overlap and/or blend with the synesthetic effects in which various sensations (olfactory, colourful, and aural) “communicate” on the affective level and contribute to the construction of meaning.

THE IMPORTANT RECURRING THEMES OF OCTAVIAN PALERʼS PROSE AND ESSAYS

The themes of Octavian Palerʼs prose and essays are part of the writer's existence and belong to an assumed and experienced reality. Being in a perpetual state of loneliness, dominated by existential "deserts", Octavian Paler develops true obsessions related to loneliness, to indulgement into melancholy, to time, to death, etc., perhaps because of his proverbial pessimism, but also of his conversion to existentialism, being the proclaimed follower of Albert Camus. One can notice in Octavian Paler's writings some recurring themes like the solitude, the emptiness, the fear, the terror, the dream, the silence, the waiting, the time, the faith, the sea, love, the creator's condition, etc., that define him as a writer and shape him as a man.

N. D. COCEA: ”VINUL DE VIAŢĂ LUNGĂ”OR THE LONGEVITY OF AMBIGUITY

Traditionally seen by the Romanian literary criticism as a journalist and a talented pamphleteer, but only as a minor writer, N. D. Cocea endures in Romanian literature first of all because of “Vinul de viaţă lungă”, a work with an uncertain narrative status (tale / short story / novel). In the course of time, the exegesis approached this literary work from various hermeneutical perspectives, of which the most productive is probably the symbolic approach, which re-assigns the text to the fantastic genre, therefore reporting it (critically) to this genre’s conventions.

MARA. THE VOICES OF ETICHS

Human feelings are something unbelievable, unexplained . They cannot be controlled. Mara, Persida, Națl, Bandi, Trică they all fell prey to them. Persida fell in love and run away with her lover, Națl, and she did everything to save her marriage. She succeeded through tolerance, patience, love and everything she did. Națl lost his mind and sought support in alcohol and violence, and he is coming back to what he was because of his love for his family. Bandi, being the illegitimate son of Hubăr, when he finds out he is his father, he cannot control his feelings, he does not control himself, and he killed his father. Mara did everything for her children and for her social statute. Due to her, Persida managed to save her marriage. Inner rages, desires, emotions are what characterizes us as human beings.

SHIFTING FROM HISTORY TO LIFE STORIES IN GABRIELA ADAMESTEANU’S WASTED MORNING

The present paper intends to portray the two facetes of Gabriela Adamesteanu’s Wasted Morning. Thus, we can approach the novel from a binary perspective. The novel relies on two hemispheres: it depicts, on one hand, a collective regime, and, on the other hand, an individual regime. The collective regime can be easily inferred by catching this colossal feeling of history, by recognizing a narrative formula which returns to past images. This narrative pattern designs the insuperable collective trauma. The individual regime consists of the fact that history is evoked and interpreted via mentalities and conceptions, which proves that the individual cannot be separated from the general (i.e. social, political) frame which belongs to. In these conditions, the human being is seen as a miniatural expression of history. The narrative discourse is oriented around these two supra-themes: individuality and collectivity. All these create an outlook in which the individual and the collective dimensions coexist. This is a legitimate reason to focus upon the shifting from history to life stories in Gabriela Adamesteanu’s Wasted Morning.

ASPECTS OF POLYPHONY IN MIHAIL SADOVEANU’S WRITINGS

The analysis of the discourse, in terms of its polyphonic aspect, over time has undergone various approaches, all of which have as a point of convergence the idea of dialogism and plurality of voices. This article seeks to identify some aspects of linguistic polyphony to highlight their pragmatic and discursive role in several of Sadoveanu's works. Consideration is given to ways of marking the presence of the speaker and the assignee in the discourse, the marks of the conative function, the presence of the phatic formulas, the interference of the quoted discourse with the quoted speech, the elements of metadiscursivity.

MIRCEA ELIADE’S PORTUGAL JOURNAL: DOCUMENTARY AND LITERATURE VALUE

The Portugal Journal is one of the less known and the most controversial books of Mircea Eliade. The article gives a brief survey of it. The author demonstrates that Portugal Journal represents a precious document for the literary historian and critic. It is full and frank statement of his political and scientific view. But perhaps the greatest value of this book is what it shows us the personality of its author. The Portugal Journal reveals more about the man Eliade than any other volume that has been published. Eliade's grief over the loss of his beloved wife defines a special character of Journal chronology. The relationship between real facts and their interpretation may be considered as one of the sources of his scientific theories (myth of eternal return in particular).
