On the Education of the Bulgarians in Adrianople and the Impact of the “Brothers of the Ressurection”

The Bulgarians in Adrianople at the end of 19th – the beginning of 20th century had four secondary schools – one for boys and one for girls, respectively for the Orthodoxies and for the Eastern Catholics (Uniats). After a short introduction in the history of the Bulgarian Uniat secondary school for boys in the Thracian city, guided by the “Brothers of the Resurrection”, it is shown in the light of documents, hold in the Bulgarian historical archives of the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia.

The Transcendence in Lucian Blaga’s Philosophical Thinking

On the occasion of the conference on Transcendence and Immanence - a topic building on the dialogue between philosophy and theology in the modern and post-modern time -, among the produced subjects, a discussion was held on the role played in respect with this dialogue by the inter-war famous philosophers, such as Lucian Blaga and Dumitru Stăniloaie. Below, we will present the issue of Transcendence according the philosopher-poet Lucian Blaga’s vision; his vision is structured into a Trilogy in his work: The Trilogy of Knowledge - The Dogmatic Aeon, The Luciferic Knowledge, The Transcendental Censorship - The Trilogy of the Culture - Horizon and Style; The Mioritic Space; The Genesis of the Metaphor and The Meaning of Culture - and The Trilogy of Values - Science and Creation; Magic Thinking and Religion; Art and Value. In these trilogies, the philosopher - poet elaborates, from an original metaphysical point of view, on the dimension of the knowledge of Transcendence - which he would define in in The Horizon of Mystery and Revelation. His vision will be addressed in a new theory of knowledge, which the philosopher-poet Lucian Blaga would distinguish as paradisiac knowledge and Lucifer knowledge, within a new Metaphysics that would allow access to Transcendence and to the wonders beyond. Postulating the existence of certain faculties of Conscience, his Metaphysics would become, according to the Theory of Transcendence, a must for the human spirit; a proof for his approach would be the great philosophical systems of the world, from the antique to the modern.

Sfântul Macarie din Patmos (1688-1737) și primele lucrări de teologie polemică ale obștii paisiene

The aim of the present study is to emphasize the importance of a special type of works translated and copied during the revival of the Hesychasm in the monastic community of Saint Paisios Velicikovsky, namely the apologetic/polemic writings, which defend the Orthodox faith against various ideas, beliefs or philosophies, in order to protect Christians from soul- damaging dangers. Our approach was motivated, on the one hand, by the fact that this type of works had been less highlighted by the historiography and, on the other hand, because the apologetic writings were and still are true and valuable theological treaties, many of them unpublished in Romanian so far. We focused our research on two manuscripts, kept at the Library of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest (756 and 426). They contain the homilies of Saint Macarios, the founder of the Theological School in Patmos and fragments of the works of famous Greek theologians of the 18th century: Evghenios Vulgaris, Evstratios Arghenti and Nikiforos Theotoke, combating – with strong arguments – the dogmatic and liturgical innovations, promoted by Catholics (such as: Filioque, the ecclesiastical supremacy of the Pope of Rome over all christianity, the purgatory, the practice of the Christian baptism by sprinkling).

Udmurt Religious Practice Today: Between Native Traditions and World Religions

This article reflects on the complex Udmurt religious situation. The Udmurt, a minority group in Central Russia, have an animistic background and live today in different administrative units of the Russian Federation: they have their own Republic, Udmurtia, in which the majority of the population is composed by ethnic Orthodox Russians, but they live also, from West to East, in the Kirov oblast, in the Mari El Republic, in Tatarstan, in Bashkortostan, and in some smaller groups eastwards. In the core territory they were submitted to forced Evangelisation by the Orthodox Russians after their integration into Muscovy, in the 16th century. Eventually, the imposed conversion succeeded, while in regions where the dominant religion was Islam, and where many fled under pressure, they kept their original religious practice. This article investigates this group’s religious affiliations and real practice today, between Orthodoxy and Islam, observing that where Islam dominates, animism thrives while where Orthodoxy dominates, different forms of syncretistic religious practice keep the former worldview alive.

Атрибутивные свойства поэтики Ф. И. Тютчева

The article substantiates the idea of Tyutchev as a recipient of the Orthodox ideals of East Slavic literature. Four of the eight attribute properties inherent in it, which are of particular importance for Tyutchev’s poetry, are considered in detail: knowledge of God, grace, religion, conciliarity. As in ancient Russian literature, Tyutchev’s author appears as an instrument of the Creator, which is manifested in the practical absence of a lyrical hero in Tyutchev’s works and the activity of an epic narrator. For Tyutchev, the poet is a student of the Russian poetry school. The highest authorities for Tyutchev are Pushkin, Karamzin, Zhukovsky and Lomonosov, who, like himself, are only an instrument in God’s hands. The property of the knowledge of God for Tyutchev is associated with the image of a secret-seer, a contemplator of elevated spectacles: natural, historical, spiritual. In this regard, Tyutchev’s poetry abounds with natural, airy, heavenly images. Tyutchev’s image of the temple is also connected with the property of God-knowledge, which comprises the whole complex of dogmatic, historical and liturgical meanings. The property of grace in Tyutchev is especially manifested in love lyrics, acting as poetry of spiritual and moral self-exposure. Wounds inflicted in a personal relationship can only be healed by the gift of divine grace. Suffering and sacrifice for Tyutchev are the means of acquiring godlike properties: patience, meekness, humility, love. In Tyutchev’s mature lyrics, the property of religion manifests itself to a special extent, visibly appearing in the cycle of poems about Slavs and in polemical poems directed against Catholicism and Protestantism. They also actualize the category of sobornost’, which reveals itself in Tyutchev’s address to a fellow poet, a Slav poet. Tyutchev’s poetry thus appears as the place of struggle for the Truth, for Orthodox ideals, for his native word, native faith, and for his soul. It is a decisive refutation of Western individualism and secessionism and the affirmation of the ideals of Orthodox sobornost’.

Перворимский контекст послания Филофея: Православие и католичество в России XV–XVI веков

The article is a trial of reconstructing one of the most important components of the cultural-historical landscape of Russia at the 15–16th centuries, which is of paramount importance for understanding the essence of the ideas of monk of the Pskov Eleazar monastery Filofei, the author of the theory «Moscow as the Third Rome». According to the conventional opinion, relations between Russia and the West after the Ferraro-Florentine Council became irreconcilably hostile, and the perception of Catholicism, the «First Rome», was unequivocally negative. If cultural contacts persisted, it was only in spite of confessional differences. However, the situation of the late XV – early XVI centuries demonstrates a more flexible and pragmatic attitude of the Russian intellectual and political elite: society and the church remained faithful to Orthodox teaching, not inferior in dogmatic and canonical issues — such as filioque, communion with unleavened bread or the ecclesiastical supremacy of the pope, but were quite ready to assimilate Western experience. Even such prominent representatives of the church hierarchy as Avraamiy of Suzdal, Gennady of Novgorod and Metropolitan Makarius recognized that something could be learned from Catholics. Against this background, the position of Filofei, who considered everything emanating from the Western church to be the machinations of the devil, seems much more categorical and intolerant. According to the author of the article, this difference in the perception of the «First Rome» is one of the reasons for the weak interest of the Pskov elder’s contemporaries in the idea of the Third Rome. He sees the explanation of such a position of Filofei, on the one hand, in the specifics of the border position of Pskov, which is why the degree of hostility to the West was clearly higher here, and on the other hand, in the fact that the theory of the monk of the Eleazar Monastery was exclusively theological and had nothing to do with foreign policy, the structure of the Russian state or the perception of Western culture.

Волынская губерния в годы царствования императора Николая II в политическом отношении являлась одной из самых ярких и колоритных и по праву считалась «оплотом русского правого дела в юго-западном крае»1. Произошло это вследствие возникновения на Волыни в годы Первой российской революции Почаевского отдела Союза русского народа (СРН), ставшего самым многочисленным — количество его сельских подотделов превышало тысячу, а общая численность членов была более 100 тыс. чел.2 Как отмечалось в одной из записок, направленных в высшие сферы накануне 1917 г., «душою этого дела» были митрополит (тогда архиепископ) Антоний (Храповицкий) и «его ближайший энергичный помощник» архимандрит Почаевской лавры Виталий (Максименко)3 — будущий архиепископ Восточно-Американский и Джерзейситский. Особенностью Почаевского отдела СРН, ставшего после расколов в этой организации самостоятельным черносотенным союзом, являлось то обстоятельство, что создавался, направлялся и окормлялся он церковными деятелями, а его массовой базой стали малограмотные крестьяне, искавшие в СРН поддержки в решении агарного вопроса, защиты от бюрократии, помощи в борьбе со своими основными конкурентами — поляками-помещиками, евреями и немецкими колонистами.

PERSPECTIVES ON RELIGIOUS DENOMINATIONS AND SOCIAL CRISES IN ROMANIA

The relationship between social crises and religious cults in Romania is a topic neglected by the specialized literature. In this paper, we propose a series of analyses regarding how social crises have influenced religious life in Romania and the mechanisms by which religious cults have played a role in solving or amplifying them. We will refer to the Romanian Orthodox Church, the majority religious denomination, and some of its positions on events/stages of these social phenomena between 1990 and 2023. This text does not propose a thorough examination of these relationships but attempts to sketch perspectives of analysis in response to the following research questions: What do Romanians think about the Church’s involvement in the life of society and implicitly in social crises? Why is it important to understand the position of religious actors on the evolution of social crises? How have religious denominations influenced the improvement/ aggravation of some dimensions of social crises? Official stances of Religious Cults during different social crises were examined, alongside instances of informal religious practices aimed at enhancing societal conditions. In Romania, religious cults have been essential partners of the State in reducing social crises, providing support through their rich infrastructure and human resources or their symbolic position in society. However, there have also been cases in which religious cults have generated conflictual social states and tension, producing or aggravating social crises.

Ławryn Drewiński – najważniejszy prawosławny protagonista szlachecki w czasach Zygmunta III

The article concerns one of the most important Orthodox noble leaders in the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – Ławryn Drewiński. He was one of the most outstanding parliamentarians of the Old Polish era. He participated in 15 parliamentary assemblies. He became famous for his expressive speeches in the parliamentary forum (especially in 1620 and 1621) in defense of the Orthodox Church, which after the conclusion of the Union of Brest (1596) had to compete with the Uniate Church for the preservation of previously held freedoms and privileges. Drewiński was a deputy from the Volyn voivodeship, whose sejmik, during the reign of Sigismund III Vasa, most often spoke about religious matt ers, consistently advocating for religious tolerance. He played an outstanding role during the interregnum of 1632, when the Orthodox managed (largely thanks to the determination of the king-elect Władysław IV Vasa) to regain some of the bishoprics, and then also a number of churches, previously taken over by the Uniates. Despite his consistent stance of fi delity to Orthodoxy, in 1629 he actively supported the att empt to build a union between the Orthodox Church and Uniates in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Drewiński was also one of the most active activists of the Orthodox brotherhoods in the times of Sigismund III, seeing them as an opportunity for the spiritual and intellectual revival of Orthodoxy in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Despite the emphasized Ruthenian origin, Drewiński was also to some extent polonized. In public activities, he used the Polish language. Like his father Basil, he was a supporter of the Polish-Lithuanian Union, while at the same time being an opponent of involving Moscow in the fi ght for the restoration of the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (after the Union of Brest).

Vplyv svätováclavských legiend na hagiografické texty o svätých Borisovi a Glebovi

The Borisogleb and St. Wenceslas cults form the basis of ancient cultural and literary ties between the Czech lands and Kievan Rus. The work solves the question of how far texts of Czech prove-nance were used in the creation of hagiographic texts about the Kiev sufferers, not only as an ideological model for the justification of the cult, but also as a source of specific topos (common place), adopted in the creation of hagiographic texts. As a result of the comparison of Czech legends about St. Václav with the Narrative about Boris and Gleb is acquaintance that the author (or authors) of the Narrative knew the texts about St. Václav and used them as a template not only for the narrative plan of the story, but also by taking over specific images and sometimes whole passages, but reworked them to the realities of the place and time of the Kiev saints.

Reference-encyclopedic edition by Prof. Milen Kumanov Orthodoxy in Bulgaria: Concise Historical Encyclopedia (Kumanov, Milen. Pravoslavieto v Balgaria: Kratka istoricheska entsiklopedia. Sofia, 2023) – panorama and basis of the e-library ORTHODOXY are presented in the cadastral tree of 31 e-libraries of the Student Scientific Society at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT) and its Research Center for Promotion of the Student Academic Activity in 2023. The last 221st reference-encyclopedic edition by M. Kumanov Orthodoxy in Bulgaria: Concise Historical Encyclopedia is taken as a model for the structuring of an encyclopedic hypertext which furthers to present and develop theoretically the fundamentals of the encyclopedica as a cognitive reference-information picture of the universal encyclopedic motion of the universe in the systemologic polyphonic unity and diversity of 84 encyclopedias in 1523 typographic units of different editions, written in 16 languages – the manual Encyclopedica (Kumanova, Alexandra. Encyclopedica. Religious terms from the Greek source can be divided into two layers: an old, who has traveled to the northern regions, predominantly Catholic Church; another younger, who belongs to the Orthodox faith with stretch in Southern Albania and Arberesh settlements. In the most ancient layer, which has reached the North, we note some names of saints such as Mëhill, Llesh, Llezhdër, Toder, Biter. Among other terms borrowings note the following: avis, fli, idhull, ikóne katholik, këllogjën, kem, manastir, orthodoks, palare, potir, pregjim, prikë, qeli. Some other terms belong only to the southern dialect, where the Orthodox religion is greater extent. Such are: ajodhimë, arkimandrit, dhespót, dhjak, dhjdtë, fron, igumén, ikonóm, kamillàf kullure, llazóre, miro, naforë, pardjsë, Pendikósti, petrahil, pisë, poganik, psall, randis, rrógje, thimjàm, vangjelizmój etc. From the Greek are also some names ofthe months ofthe year with religious origins, such asjandr, shëmitër, shëmhill.

In the following article we shall attempt to study the concept of priesthood in biblical-thological perspective and focus on the last book of our Canon, the book of Revelation. This first part focuses on the explicit priestly texts (Rev 1,6; 5,10 and 20,6). Analysis and comparation of these texts brings up several important conclusions. The priesthood in Revelation is always closely conected to (active) kingship (rather than ambivalent kingdom). There is wide disscusion on the eschatological character of these concepts. To stay faithful to the apocalyptic genre and narrative character of Rev we need to take into account the overall theological and practical purpose of this writing. Only than we can grasp the inaugurated character of the priesthood with strongly soteriological and christological aspects which take us back to the unique historical moment of Christ´s priestly sacrifice.

TÜRKİYE’NİN TEK ERMENİ KÖYÜ VAKIFLI KÖYDE DİNSEL MÜZİK UYGULAMALARI

In this study, religious music practices in Surp Asdvadzadzin Church in Vakıflı village, which is the only Armenian village in Turkey, were examined culturally and structurally. It is aimed to create scientific literature by examining and analyzing the structures of faith music made in Vakıflı Village from a cultural and formal point of view, and to reveal the social and cultural contexts of the vision of Vakıflı Armenian Village faith music. The Armenian people in the Vakıflı Village of the Samandağ district of Hatay province, which has different ethnicities, are affiliated with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. The repertoire of faith music performed during the services in the Armenian church in the village is performed in various forms. The musical performance of other prayer and hymn texts (Badarak, Sharagan and Sharagnos), which constitute the ethnology of faith music in the village of Vakifli, is sung solo, the choir accompanying the solo, only the choir and the call and response between the father and the choir. The traditional rituals of the region are used in the rituals held with the five basic feasts and the commemoration days of some saints. These special days are "Gaghund", "Bızdağ Zadag", "Surp Sarkis", "Dardanas", "Vartanants", "Pargindınk", "Dzarzartur", "Mindz Zadag", "Hampartsum", "Vartivur", "Khaghigi Zadag", "Khiçen Zadag" "Serpagip". Apart from these special days, another area where faith music is used is birth, wedding and death ceremonies. In this study, ethnomusicology research methods were used to examine ethnomusicological approaches in the perspective of ethnology of belief music. Within the scope of the field research, he participated in the services in the church in the village as an observer and interviewed the mugannis, especially the father of the church, and the local people. The focus of the study is the understanding of the history and demographic structure of the village of Vakıflı in the Musa Mountain region and the religious music of the Armenian Orthodox

СТИЛЬ КЛАСИЦИЗМ У НАСТІННОМУ ЖИВОПИСІ ХРАМІВ КИЄВО-ПЕЧЕРСЬКОЇ ЛАВРИ

The purpose of the article is to study the features of the classicism style in mural paintings of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra churches. The research methodology based on the complex using of historical and cultural analysis, art study one, biographical method. The scientific novelty of the study. The implementation of the classicism style in the mural painting of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is discovered. The archival descriptions of murals, photos, cartograms have been put into scientific circulation. On the basis of records, the stylistic signs of classicism in the mural paintings of the side-altar of the St. apostle and evangelist John the Theologian of the Great Church and the interior of the Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos have been researched. It has been revealed, thanks to which principles of the construction of composition and colour, as well as specific decorative elements classicist mural paintings have been created in the compartments of these churches. On the basis of stylistic analysis and analysis of archival documents, the working hypothesis for the improvement of the attribution of mural painting of the Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos has been proposed. Its connection with the painting baroque decoration of the Great Church (Dormition Cathedral) has been observed. Conclusions. The classicism style was represented in the mural painting of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra churches in the 19th century. The murals of the side-altar of the St. Apostle and evangelist John the Theologian of the Great Church and the interior of the Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos were created in the classicism style. The painting decorations of the side-altar and the church were formed on the general principles of classicist composition, such as strict symmetry, a calm and clear rhythm, an ordered structure, and emotional restraint. The artist painted a number of elements of the classicist architecture such as caissons, elements of the Corinthian order, rust, etc. He created the illusion of bas-reliefs and stucco moulding thanks to the use of the grisaille technique. He painted illusory gilt frames of various shapes that bordered the compositions, stylized monochrome ornaments. He chose blue (the symbolic colour of the Theotokos) and shades of gray as dominants for colour. The analysis of the artistic style and records made it possible to propose the working hypothesis regarding the authorship and time of creation the murals of the Church of Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. They were painted, as well as murals of the side-altar of the St. Apostle John the Theologian by Kornilii Voloshynov during 1837–1838. In the mural painting of the church, in the plots and locations of the compositions there were borrowings from the baroque decoration of the Church (Dormition Cathedral).

УКРАЇНСЬКІ ПАРАЛЕЛІ ДО ЯГЕЛЛОНСТВА І САРМАТИЗМУ В БУТТІ ЄВРОПИ ХVIII–ХIХ СТОЛІТЬ

The purpose of the work is to analyse Ukrainian parallels to Jagiellonianism and Sarmatism in the history of Europe in the 18th-19th centuries, particularly in the musical sphere. The research methodology involves a combination of historical-cultural, comparative, and empirical-analytical research methods to identify Jagiellonianism and Sarmatism in the artistic scope of Ukraine and Poland in the 19th and 20th centuries. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time in Polish and Ukrainian musicology, historical information on the Jagiellonian principle of religious-state regulation of the Slavic Commonwealth is summarised from the point of view of the Ukrainian positive in the rise of Ukrainian Orthodoxy and the supranational resonance of Petro Mohyla's reform. Conclusions. Jagiellonianism is the age of freedom of the Cossacks, who sanctified the Cossack age with high education and singing energy, which is the centre of high honour and pride of the Ukrainian nation, its thoughtfulness (in Old Ukrainian and Old Polish languages, duma means honour). For the Polish tradition, Jagiellonianism is the time when the capital was Krakow, and not Warsaw, which, due to its ethnic and cultural advantages, was and remains the custodian of the Old Catholic traditions, originating from the time of the undivided Christian Church and in the awareness of kinship with the East Slavic world. It was Jagiellonianism in Poland that contributed to the construction of the Zaporizhzhia Sich, which became an essential pillar of defence against the military expansion of the Crimean Khanate (since the 13th century) and Ottoman Turkey. Crimea is the last of the Greek colonies, the birthplace of Eastern Slavic Christianity, the place of activity of the "Orthodox brothers" expelled by the Anglo-Saxons from Catholicised Britain (XI century), transformed in the 13th-14th centuries. to the stronghold of Islam. Polish Sarmatism in the romantic era was influenced by the Cossacks, who en masse joined the chumaks who carried out commercial, military, and political operations, and, similar to the Polish-noble circles, considered offensive proposals to engage in agriculture, which did not correspond to the status of a foreman in the 17th century.

SACRED MUSIC FROM AN ORTHODOX PERSPECTIVE

In recent years, a considerable number of books and articles in English dealing with art and the sacred from a Christian perspective. These publications have proposed many useful and stimulating perspectives to the discussion of the ways in which the sacred can be represented and have contributed to achieving a crucial goal in raising the level of this discussion in both artistic and theological terms. Thus, the work of plastic artists over the centuries on the icon was discussed and a complex analysis of the philosophical context of approaching the sacred in art was carried out, which required hard work in the direction of establishing an artistic mystagogical creation. There is, however, no real attempt to discover how, for example, Byzantine and Gregorian chant, Christian polyphony, Palestinian Masses, Georgian polyphonic music, or the countless compositions of the Divine Liturgy in Russia, to name just a few examples, could embody or transmit the sacred in their respective liturgical contexts. Despite some remarkable contributions and the fact that many of the recent studies in Western European languages concerning the relationship between art and the sacred have been quite prolific, they have generally avoided discussions of liturgical music, a special dimension when discussing the sacred music of the Orthodox Church. The present work aims to establish some themes for the continuation of this discussion, drawing not only on recent commentators, but especially on the comments of the Fathers of the Church on liturgical hymns.
