After the reopening of the library, the access for users was allowed only to persons who strictly complied with the sanitary norms valid in this context: wearing a protective mask, disinfecting their hands, maintaining physical distance and having the green certificate (proof of vaccination or of the SarsCov-2 virus infection). Among all library services only one aspect remained unsolved in this context, namely, cultural and artistic events: conferences, book launches, concerts, film screenings etc. Because all those required the physical presence of the public, they were suspended after the outbreak of the pandemic.

On February 23, 2020, retired associate professor of the University of Lodz, Stefan Pytlas, passed away. He is certainly one of the few most outstanding experts in the history of industrial Lodz, and in particular of the Lodz bourgeoisie. His monograph on this social group in the years 1864–1914 entered permanently into the canons of Polish historiography. The deceased professor was for two terms the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Lodz and in the last years of his employment at this university he headed the Department of Polish History of the 19th century. In addition, for half a century he was associated with the activities of the Polish Historical Society, in which in 1997–2003 he was the president of the Łódź Branch. For many years he was involved in the editorial work of the Lodz Yearbook (“Rocznik Łódzki”), and in 1995–1997 he was the editor-in-chief of this oldest scientific journal in Lodz.

The reviewed book consists of several separate essays, the unifying element of which comprises the current position of various issues in the contemporary debate in Czech society. The essays cover topics such as homelessness, suburbanisation, climate change and disinformation, which are illustrated using principally contemporary Czech examples. The author applies a number of concepts from various fields of the social sciences and humanities for the interpretation thereof and places them in the broader context in a legible, concise and appropriate manner with regard to the popular learning format.

The reviewed publication describes the situation in nine Czech villages and towns and its impact on public attitudes. The book's author suggests that the selected settlements have a number of commonalities, and that many problems that are perceived as "burning issues" at the national level are not felt at all at the local level or, more often, are transformed, i.e. “distilled“ by local specifics and priorities. The reviewed publication can be recommended to readers who are interested in the functioning of Czech municipalities "from below", as well as those who have tired of major national problems and for whom it may be inspiring to consider everyday reality at the local level.
