The subject of analysis in this article is the poetic complex of the sea in the poetry of Galina Kuznetsova, a poet representing the “first wave” of Russian emigration. In the Olive Orchard (Олив-ковый сад, 1937), the only poetry book she published, the sea appears as a source of aesthetic sen-sations, but above all it is an impulse for existential reflections of the narrative subject, a projection of his mental states and an explanation of her artistic worldview. In the analysis of maritime themes in Kuznetsova’s poetry, Vladimir Toporov’s research was used. according to which the poetic complex of the sea is determined by the psychophysiological structure of the author of the text and is a carrier of non-poetic realities.

The subject of discussion in the article is the way the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov’s short story Sounds perceives the world. The sense-forming function of the sound as a literary trick, serv-ing to conceptualize the image of the world and the descriptions of emotional states of Nabokov’s characters, is revealed. It is proved that due to the recollective strategy (reconstructing in his mem-ory the day of parting with the beloved) the protagonist-artist perceives the ubiquitous harmony of sounds in the surrounding reality and at the same time recognizes (Gadamer) his own feelings that once bound him with his beloved. The “rhythmic order” of nature experienced by the protagonist evokes associations with Pythagorean reflection on the existence of permanent dependencies be-tween the rhythm of the Cosmos and the rhythms of man. This finds its expression in Nabokov’s short story in showing the intermingling of the worlds: establishing a relationship (unity) between the internal (emotional) and external (nature) world, between micro and macrocosm. The act of rec-ollection itself inscribes in a strategy of tranforming memories: forming in imagination a different image of the lovers’ parting and creating another – a dreamed image of the beloved.

The image of the writer plays an important role in the publicist works of Ivan Bunin in 1920. It is the image of the author struggling against the Bolsheviks, and the image of those writers who helped the Bolsheviks propaganda as well as “new Soviet writers”. In 1920 Bunin as the most signif-icant writer of the Russian Diaspora focuses on the most famous writer among those who, according to Bunin, supports the Bolsheviks – Maxim Gorky. Bunin also pays close attention to the contro-versy with H.G. Wells: this is due to the role that the English writer played in the context of Soviet Russia. Bunin’s works in 1920 are written as a reaction of the Russian writer to the various texts published in the press, and the discussion with the works of his main opponents – Gorky and Wells.

This article is devoted to the analysis of the autobiographical element in the novel by Zachar Prilepin The Pathologies. It can be noticed that the contemporary Russian writer resigns from postmodernism poetics and turns to the tradition of realistic literature. What is more, he wants to overcome the crisis of authorship. The novel The Pathologies is also a response to the esthetic need of modern readers, who are interested in broadly understood autobiography and observation of life in all its dimensions. Prilepin – a veteran of The First and the Second Chechen Wars – shares his soldier’s experience and emotions. The autobiographical element is present in The Pathologies on various levels (hero, narration, extreme situation).

This article aims to study the use of terms such as fiqh al-lughah and „ilm al-lughah by early and contemporary scholars of the Arabic language. The definition, content and object of these terms are reviewed. In the early periods, there is no distinction of fiqh al-lughah and „ilm allughah. This distinction is identified by some modern scholars of the Arabic language after reading early studies of the Arabic language through western literature and translating and adopting western concepts of philology and linguistics to the Arabic language. Therefore, first of all, the meaning of the concepts in western terminology is scrutinized and then the question of whether there is such a distinction in the early period of Arabic language studies is examined. Finally the point that to what extent modern distinction of fiqh al-lughah and „ilm al-lughah reflects the reality is discussed.

Qushayri is one of the important Sufis of 11th century. He wrote a number of books about Sufism including Risâlah and Latâif al-ishârât, the last of which has been seen as one of the great esoteric commentaries of the Holy Qur’an. There is another treatise of his, called Nahv al-Qulūb (or al-Nahv al-muawwal), in which he interprets the rules of Arabic grammar from a Sufi perspective. This interesting treatise is like a bridge between Sufism and the Arabic philology. It is a well-known fact that the basic sciences of Islam (‘ulum ash-shar‘iyya) including Sufism were closely knit together. However, the relationship of Sufism to Arabic philology is not very well documented by both classical and contemporary writers. This treatise, which seems to be early work in this respect, focuses on this particular subject. This paper shall analyze the content of this treatise and try to explain some of the concepts used in it.

The subject of this paper is a transtextual analysis of two texts entitled Les trois aveugles de Compiègne: a 13th-century “fabliau” and its play adaptation by a lesser-known French author, Jean Ott (1878–1935). Applying Gérard Genette’s terminology (Palimpstestes, Seuils), the author examines different levels of transformations, focusing mainly on the semantic message of hypo- and hypertext.

In a recent article (Löfstedt 2016), the author argued that Thomas Becket’s three French letters from his exile preserved by Garnier de Pont-Sainte-Maxence as a part of his versified Vie de Saint Thomas (ed. E. Walberg 1922) were not translated from the Latin letters (ed. Anne Duggan 2000). Further, she raised the suspicion that the Latin letters – considered to be authentic, but preserved only in copies – had been altered. Focusing on the beginning and the end of the letter Expectans expectaui addressed to Henry II, this present article compares its Latin text to the French text. The French letter is written by an intelligent and sincere friend of the King, while the Latin letter has been « retouched » to let the letter-writer appear as verbose and unintelligent, and, then, as a sanctimonious, vicious enemy of the King. Apparently, the person responsible for this manipulation tried to destroy all affection the King might still have had for Thomas Becket, because he did not want Thomas Becket to be invited to return from his exile.

In his miscella the author deals with the problems of scattered notes and remarks on Károly Rédei’s work Nord-ostjakischen Texte (Kazym-Dialekt) as well as with several reviews of this work and shows with which difficulties we are still confronted when dealing with all these materials. Indeed, there are still some remarks and corrections to be done on Rédei’s work which have been overlooked by all the reviewers, but besides all criticism the work is still worth reading since it is one of the most important collections of Northern-Ostyak texts.

Bearing in mind the importance of attitude in sociolinguistic research and its huge theoretical potential for accounting for various language behaviours, it is surprising to see numerous misconceptions concerning this construct and its conceptualization as well as criticism as to its role in predicting and explaining speech behaviour (cf., for instance, Cargile, Giles 1997: 195; Edwards 1999: 109; Ladegaard 2000: 229–230; Garrett 2001: 630; Soukup 2012; Taylor, Marsden 2014). The author claims that attitude research can still prove very insightful and helpful in sociolinguistic theory building, but to do so, one needs to reconceptualize attitude along the reasoned action approach on the foundations of which the theory of planned behaviour rests. The theory posits that attitude is one of the three general predictors having a sufficient explanatory and predictive power in the case of most human behaviours.

This paper presents a survey of the notion of sentiment linguistique (Sprachgefühl, linguistic feel) as seen by philologists and linguists of the end of the 19th century, mainly Littré, Paul and Saussure. The notion appears as a conceptual link between the traditionnal philology and the new „linguistics”. We first discuss the termes, then examine the positions of Littré and Paul, and finally concentrate on Saussure, in whose work the notion receives the most extensive treatment. Sentiment linguistique is also presented as having great potential for a renewal of our current views on language, especially related to analogy.
