Entrepreneurial Intention: South African Youth’s Willingness to Start Tourism Businesses

Previous studies have recognised entrepreneurship as a tool capable of driving a nation’s economy. This study explored tourism entrepreneurial intention of South African youth, and analysed relationships between entrepreneurship statements on the one hand, and entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial impact on the other hand. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from simple-randomly selected 220 youth living in Mtubatuba Local Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate data analyses yield information to address research objectives. Significant proportion of the youth have entrepreneurial intention, these youth want to solve problems, are willing to pursuing their dreams, have internal locus of control, have positive outlook, have the ability to identify opportunities, and above all have strong sense of empathy. South African Department of Labour needs to develop an operational plan to provide business education, entrepreneurial skills, and relevant support that can empower the youth to start their own businesses. This study validates the alignment of entrepreneurship roles to those of making a difference, innovation, leadership, and self-belief; and shares a positive outlook for the South African economy if the enabling political and economic conditions are created.

Foreign Direct Investment-Growth Nexus in Emerging Markets: does Human Capital Development Matter?

The study explored the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth and examined if human capital development is a channel through which FDI influence economic growth.Literature shows that the impact of FDI on economic growth is no longer a disputed matter. What is still unresolved is an agreeable list of channels through which FDI affects economic growth. This prompted the author to investigate if human capital development is a channel through which FDI influence economic growth in emerging markets using a dynamic panel generalised methods of moments (GMM) technique. Moreover, majority of previous studies on FDI-growth nexus overlooked the endogeneity issues and the dynamic nature of economic growth data. According to the author‘s best knowledge, this is the first study which investigated if human capital development is a channel through which economic growth triggered by FDI takes place in emerging markets. FDI positively but non-significantly influenced economic growth in emerging markets. When FDI was interacted with human capital development, the size of the positive impact on economic growth improved but was still non-significant. Emerging markets are therefore urged to implement policies aimed at increasing human capital development in order to enhance FDI‘s ability to influence economic growth.

Action Learning by Professionals: Evidence from Nigeria

This paper is centered on the concept of action learning, which emphasizes the direct outcome or consequence of acquiring skills or competences through the process of finding solutions to substantive difficult organisational issues. Primary data were collected from 100 respondents from 5 financial service providers/information communication and technology practitioners in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Simple percentages were used to analyse the data while correlation matrix was used to test the hypotheses. The result showed that 88% of the respondents affirmed that action learning, among other benefits, enhances both individual and team problem-solving capabilities, thereby resulting in resource leveraging as the most important factor at the organisational level The correlation matrix showed that action learning positively impacts organisational changes at (r=0.466) while it also facilitates improvement of performance given (r= 0.578).

Human Capital Development: A Catalyst for Achieving Sdgs in Nigeria

There is no gainsaying in the fact that one of the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to attain poverty hitch-free by 2030. However, the continuous increase in poverty level has generated a lot of debates among policymakers, scholars and economists while government have also been continuously formulating different policies to avert this ugly situation. Various studies have documented the contributions of human capital development to poverty alleviation in Nigeria with special reference to MDGs and their results might not be transmitted to achieving the SDGs in Nigeria.This study therefore addresses this issue. The paper examines the impact of human capital development on poverty alleviation in Nigeria over the last two and half decades (1990-2017). The results obtained shall be used to project into the future as to whether investments in human capital expenditure has potential to achieve the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The study adopts a log-linear regression model formulated sequentially from the Solow’s neo-classical growth theory and standard Cobb-Douglas production function. The prevalence of poverty rate as a percentage of total population was regressed on unemployment rate, real government expenditures on education and health. The result of the estimated model reveals that real government expenditure on education and unemployment rate both have significant effect on the prevalence of poverty in Nigeria. However, real government expenditure on health has negative but insignificant inelastic effect on the prevalence of poverty rate in Nigeria during the period under review. On this basis, the paper therefore suggests that government should invest more in education and facilitate the integration of vocational training programmes and courses as part of academic curriculum in schools at all levels. Also, government should increase investment in the health sector to ensure improvement and access to quality health facilities in the country, if human capital investment should catalyze SDGs achievement.

Labour Force Reduction’s Influence on Financial Performance of Manufacturing Companies: A Case Study of Playtime Manufacturers (2011 – 2016)

The objective of the study was to determine the influence of employing labour force reduction initiatives on financial performance of manufacturing companies. The researchers adopted aquantitative methodology. Primary data was collected from the total target population through questionnaires. A census was used to ensure that there was no bias and that findings could be generalised to the entire organisation with accuracy. The first major finding was that manufacturing companies in this developing country use layoffs, furloughs, outsourcing and delayering as labour force reduction methods. The second finding was that employees had adverse emotional reactions after labour force reduction initiatives, however, the emotions did not manifest to physical reactions such as strikes and employee turnover. The final finding was that labour force reduction is positively related to financial performance as measured by Return on Total Assets (ROTA). This research will enable organisation seeking to implement labour force reduction measures to critically assess method, effects and factors to consider before selecting a method best suited for their organisation. The study will add to literature on labour force reduction and performance of an organisation. The research will assist future students researching on labour force reduction as well as academics.

The Sensitivity of the Effect of on-the-Job Training on Employment Outcomes in Experimental and Non-Experimental Settings

This paper examines the effect of on-the-job training on the probability of finding a job. Were evaluate the existing training program using experimental data from the National Employment Service, 2013 and non-experimental data from the Labor Force Survey, 2013. Moreover, we employ the Propensity Score Matching method to estimate the training effect and to check its sensitivity to a different model specification and to different degrees of randomization. The results show that the average training effect on the treated is smaller and the reduction in the selection bias is higher when a different specification is used. Moreover, the effect is also sensitive to different degrees of randomization settings, i.e., the effect is smaller in a non-experimental setting compared to the quasi experimental setting. Hence, we conclude that the average training effect on the treated decreases if we increase the randomization of the treated group.

Comparative Survey of Intellectual Capital in Cement Industry, Pharmaceutical and Food Products Accepted in Tehran Stock Exchange

In this study, a comparative survey of intellectual capital and its components which are the physical, human and structural capital among the companies of cement industry, pharmaceutical and food products accepted in Tehran Stock Exchange has been addressed. For this purpose, in the time interval of 2006 to 2014, 43 companies were selected among the above mentioned industries. ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) test was chosen using SPSS software to analyze the hypotheses of the research.The results of the analysis showed that cement and pharmaceutical companies have a significant difference in their structural capital and the structural capital of the cement industry is more than that of pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical and food industries are significantly different in terms of their Physical capital and the physical capital of pharmaceutical industry is more than that of food industry and ultimately, there is a significant difference between cement and the pharmaceutical industry in terms of their human capital and human capital in the industry Cement is more than that of pharmaceutical industry.

The influence of staff turnover on work motivation and job performance of employees in it sector – the results of empirical research

Voluntary staff turnover is becoming increasingly common, especially in the IT sector. It can impact job performance and the factors which shape it, such as work motivation. Given this fact, the aim of this paper is to empirically verify the impact of voluntary staff turnover on job performance and work motivation of employees in the IT sector, and to verify whether voluntary staff turnover can be a moderator of the relationship between work motivation and job performance of employees in the IT sector. The formulated research hypotheses were verified on a sample of 151 employees from organisations within the IT sector in Poland. To verify the impact of voluntary staff turnover on work motivation and job performance, a correlation analysis was conducted. In order to verify the moderation effect, a regression analysis with a moderator was used. The results of the research reveal that voluntary staff turnover has a negative impact on the job performance of employees from the IT sector. Moreover, voluntary staff turnover is a moderator for the relationship between work motivation and job performance of employees from the IT sector and has a negative impact on this relationship, which means that an increase in voluntary staff turnover reduces the positive impact of work motivation on job performance for employees from the IT sector. In this way, it has been proven that – in terms of impact of work motivation on job performance – the phenomenon of voluntary staff turnover is a negative one, although it is common among employees from the IT sector.

The importance and complexity of thisfield make structural changes one of the most important areas of scientific research. The purpose of the study is to identify and evaluatechanges in the sectoral employment structure in the Silesian Voivodeship in the years 2009-2017,with particular emphasis on intra-sectoral changes in the service sector. In connection with this,an analysis of structural changes was carried out in the Silesian Voivodeship in the examinedperiod. The research was based on data obtained from the Local Data Bank. The analysis of structural changes in employment was conducted using structure and dynamics indicators as well asone of the known measures of structure diversity. The results of the analysis allowed this study torecognize and assess changes within the sectoral employment structure within the studied region.

Effect of Locust Bean Pod Ash and Eggshell Ash on the Mortar Compressive and Flexural Strengths of Cement Blends

An increase in the generation of biogenic wastes such as locust bean pods and eggshells coupled with the need to drive sustainability in the cement industry has led the use of these wastes as cement replacement materials. The paper aims to investigate the effect of locust bean pod ash (LBPA) and eggshell ash (ESA) on the mortar compressive and flexural strength of ternary cement blends. The LBPA was obtained by calcining locust bean pod (LBP) at various temperatures of 800-900 °C and time of 60–120 minutes at an interval of 50 °C and 30 minutes respectively to determine the optimal conditions. The chemical composition of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), LBPA and ESA were obtained via X-ray Fluo-rescence (XRF) Spectrometer and LBPA chemical composition did not satisfy one of the requirements specified by ASTM C618-01 (2001) with SiO2+ Al2O3+Fe2O3 of 30.42 wt. % which is less than 50 wt. %, but satisfies SO3 content requirement of 0.7 wt. % and Loss on Ignition (LOI) of 7.12 wt. % and contains 19.42 wt. % CaO which is within the range of 10-30 wt. % CaO is class C pozzolan. The com-pressive strength of blended cement mortars at the early age of 2 and 7 days pro-duced better strengths for cement blends with higher ESA content than LBPA especially at LBPA/LBPA-ESA ratio of 0, 0.4 and 0.6 for 2.5 wt. % cement replacement respectively. The early strength gain could be attributed to the provision of more nucleation sites by ESA inclusion which results in the acceleration of cement hydration rate. On the other hand, the enhanced strengths at 28 days of cement blended with various replacement from 2.5–10 wt. % could be attributed to the pozzolanic reaction between the available lime and reactive silica from LBPA despite clinker diminution which was close to control. Another reason for enhanced strength' could be attributed to the increased potassium content by an increase in LBPA content resulting in a gradual strength gain (retarder) muscovite formation K2Al2Si6Al4O20(OH)4. All cement blends experienced an increase in the mortar compressive and flexural strengths as the curing day progressed with some blends producing enhanced strength compared to control especially with 1.5 ESA1LBPA produced the best strength at 50.15 (6.82) N/mm2 against 48.80 (6.80) N/mm2. This enhanced strength could be related to the pozzolanic activity and the high potassium content from LBPA despite clinker diminution, especially at 28 days.

The spread of COVID-19 and the drastic blockages that followed led to the placement of economies and labor markets around the world in a state of emergency. Governments are fighting to protect jobs and businesses. Some of the measures identified and implemented are short-term telework and support for companies and the self-employed. The epidemic caused by coronavirus poses a threat to the European economy and to the living standards of its citizens. In the short term, this means an extreme disruption of citizens and labor markets, as countries impose travel restrictions and blockages at the national level to slow the spread of the virus and prevent overwhelming health services. Governments need to find great ways to protect workers and their economies from financial hardship and potential collapse (Sohrabi et al., 2020). The recession seems inevitable. Citizens themselves also face exceptional limitations on their movements, which could have overwhelming effects on their health and well-being. But the full effects of the crisis are still unknown and could last for many years.

Criteria and instruments for the appointment of top-officials in the EU-member states and the EU-institutions – how ethical and meritocratic are we in practice?

Purpose – Literature assumes that politicization is increasing in HRM policies in the public sector. This article will test this claim in the field of appointment procedures for top officials. Aims – The article analyses appointment procedures for top officials in the European Union (EU) member States and EU institutions. it focuses on the ethical dimension of appointment procedures and how the different administrations and appointment committees manage conflicts of interest as regards political – (politicisation) and merit-based interests. Design/Approach –The article draws on a research assignment for the European Parliament, following the appointment of a former Secretary General of the European Commission in february 2018 and the subsequent European Ombudsman enquiry and finding of maladministration. the research is based on a critical review of the existing literature on the appointment of top-officials, the assessment of European Commission and European Ombudsman documents, the review of appointment procedures in other international, European and national organisations and interviews with civil servants in international and European organisations, the EU institutions, and EU member States. Findings – The article finds that appointment procedures are highly opaque. Politicisation remains a complex challenge but can be attenuated if positions are published and committees improve the management of conflicts of interest. Limitations – Because of the – often – complex nature of top-officials appointment procedures, it is difficult to get access to “real life facts”. Also in the case of appointment procedures in the European Commission, we were confronted with opaque decision-making processes and found it difficult to get a real picture of processes. Practical Implications – the findings of this survey were presented to EU decision-makers and officials from various EU institutions Originality – Still, this study is based on – so far – unofficial documents and data that made it possible to get access to so far disclosed information.

Augmented human-centered management. Human resource development for highly automated business environments

Purpose – Digitalization and automation increasingly change, enhance, complement and substitute the human workplace. There is a crowding-out of human work by machines driven by underlying paradigms still rooted in scientific management and neoclassical economics. The focus is on technology which – unlike human beings – rapidly improves in fulfilling the requirements of an ‘actor economicus’. in this dynamic context, humans are continuously requested to adapt to new structures, processes and systems which are supposed to be more efficient. The purpose of this article is to shift focus from management for automation with residual human work to what is called Augmented Human-Centered management (AHCm). Aim – The aim of this article is to derive an approach for human resource training and development that is suitable for a world with increasing digitalization and automation. it bridges the gap between human resource management and related disciplines that can contribute to this aim. methodology:methodologically based on an integrative literature review, it is interdisciplinary in its approach and builds on work in computer science to outline the future context of Human-Agent Collectives (HAC). further, it is informed by human factors science and by relevant literature from the fields of philosophy, economics, and strategy. Findings – A conceptual framework for human resource training and development is derived that can support AHCm in highly digitalized and automated HAC. Limitations – Only a first overview indicating consistency and plausibility can be provided. Pilot projects and empirical testing can be considered as next steps. Practical Implications – AHCm is an integrated approach to human resource training and development for a world with artificial intelligence, ready for operationalization by human resource management departments Originality – The combination of existing knowledge from the disciplines of human resource management, human factors science, strategy, economics, philosophy and computer science leads to new insights.

Wykorzystanie drzew regresyjnych w badaniu zależności pomiędzy wskaźnikiem efektywnośc

The aim of the article is to analyse the relationship between the employment efficiency index and the structure of unemployment in county (‘powiat’) employment offices in Poland. Five research hypotheses connected with the research goal were formulated. The most important features characterizing the unemployed were: education, age, the duration of unemployment, gender, the place of residence. Regression trees were used as the research tool, which enabled to group county employment offices with differing values of the employment efficiency index with a simultaneous indication of independent variable variants (diagnostic features) affecting its level. After conducting the research, the authors managed to verify positively and unquestionably the hypothesis that the higher the percentage of the unemployed with higher education, the easier it is to achieve higher employment efficiency. In a less explicit way, only under certain conditions, hypotheses regarding the age of the unemployed and the place of residence were verified. Nevertheless, it was not possible to verify positively the hypotheses regarding the impact of gender and the duration of unemployment on the employment efficiency index.

Konwergencja czy dywergencja zasobów pracy w Polsce?

Eurostat’s projections indicate that by 2050 Poland will see a significant reduction in and ageing of its labour resources. The country is experiencing a strong polarization of demographic phenomena and disproportions in population structure. The goal of the study was to determine whether Poland’s labour resources are undergoing convergence or divergence. The occurrence of beta, sigma and gamma-convergence in the country’s individual provinces (voivodeships) in the period 2012-2018 was verified. Three models were created (working age population ratio, young-age dependency ratio and old-age dependency ratio). The results indicate the occurrence of absolute (unconditional) beta-convergence of the variables that characterise labour resources. No unambiguous confirmation of sigma-convergence, i.e. a significant reduction in the diversification of the provinces in terms of the studied variables, was obtained. Similarly, the occurrence of gamma-convergence, i.e. a significant change in the positions of the provinces in terms of labour resources, was not unambiguously confirmed.
