The circumstances and conditions for either deliberate or unintentional falsifications of documents were created at the beginning of the sixteenth century with the sudden growth of the culture of literacy. Investigators of those times were faced with the task of examining said counterfeited documents. However, a part of the falsifications have not been identified since. In consequence, contemporary historians and publishers are burdened with the possibility of finding such documents. There may be an instance when a falsified document is published several times and, on the basis of that, factual errors in historiography may appear. A particular example of such falsification may be the case of the privilege of Aleksandras Jogailaitis, which was awarded to Ona Masalskienė and her three sons on March 22, 1506. After applying the diplomatic method and thorough formal analysis, it has been revealed that the quoted privilege is a falsification. This privilege does not meet the formalities of the documents issued by the Chancellery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the beginning of the sixteenth century. The use of words and expressions that would otherwise be unusual for the sixteenth century, e.g., the word “love,” further confirms the fact of falsification. Additional proof of falsification is that the witnesses mentioned in the eschatocol are listed incorrectly; moreover, the used stamp is titled “sigillumque ducale.” The language in which the document was written does not convince of its originality either. There were not many documents that were issued in Latin in the beginning of the sixteenth century. In addition, it is quite complicated to find any documents that could be easily compared to the examined one. Most likely, this falsification appeared in the background of Vilnius Bishop Ignacijus Masalskis, while trying to increase income received from Druja as there was an important customs point as well as a tobacco warehouse there. However, it remains unclear why this privilege was first recorded in the books of the Supreme Tribunal and approved by the ruler only 25 years later.

Betonas. Mitas. Antrojo pasaulinio karo Sovietų Sąjungos karių palaidojimo vietos Lietuvoje, Mindaugas Nastaravičius kalbėjo apie projektą „100 Lietuvų“. Panašu, kad renginio organizatoriai partizanų istoriją (jau) mato kaip bendro Lietuvos istorijos lauko, istorinės tapatybės dalį – dėl to iečių laužyti nebereikia.

Vieno žinomiausių XIX a. [...]

History teaching has been raising many didactic issues recently. First, the concept of the very discipline of history has been undergoing changes; the aim of school education is being shifted from memorizing pre-defined content toward developing historical literacy based on critical thinking and the development of historical research skills. Second, admitting the impact of the sociocultural context on pupil achievement, the attitude toward children’s receptive skills and their development has been gaining new perspectives. This is of high importance in primary education, where a heroic story is often still dominant. At present, the discourse of primary education curriculum change emphasizes the attractive communication of scientific knowledge and the demand for active research to broaden children’s deep understanding. However, the development of historical literacy in primary classes still remains to be complicated, since, on the one hand, it requires new landmarks – what and how to teach, and on the other hand, research in this field has been very limited. In Lithuania, there is an intention to re-new the curricula in all the fields. Therefore, it becomes relevant to analyze what skills to understand historical time should be developed in primary classes. This scientific problem is solved by carrying out a qualitative analysis of the content of the primary education curriculum. Based on the chosen model of understanding historical time (De Groot-Reuvekamp, Ros, Van Boxtel, Oort 2015), this article analyzes the extent to which the curriculum requirements of history teaching correspond to the goals and comprehension levels of the model (A – Emergent; B – Initial; C – Continued) and what should be improved when updating the curriculum. The last stage of research contains the research data supplemented with data gathered by a survey of the primary teachers and prospective primary teachers, who are in the final year of their Childhood Pedagogy university studies. The respondents defined, in written form, their expectations regarding the skills of historic time perception, which should be developed so that primary school students would understand what historic time is. The research results reveal that the present curriculum requirements for the primary school pupils are low. They lead toward the stage of acquiring understanding (A – Emergent) rather than Initial (B) or Continued (C) stages. Descriptions of program knowledge, understanding, and procedural skills do not reflect growth-oriented expectations and research-based learning outcomes. The analysis of results have shown that their expectations do not correspond to the conclusions made by the latest academic research about the primary age student learning achievement possibilities. The study revealed that teachers’ and students’ express higher expectations for student achievement than the program. Therefore, while revisiting the curriculum, it is important to pay more attention to the development of historical research and higher thinking skills, which would be a significant step toward gaining a deeper understanding of historic time.

This article presents an analysis of the issue of how Lithuanians, namely, their ethno-social elite – the nobility – became more Russian in the 14th–16th centuries. The study reveals that social, political and cultural relations at the top levels of government in the GDL and in the privileged estate did not encourage the Lithuanian nobility to “turn Russian”. The ethnocentric vision of language equality nurtured by representatives of Lithuanian culture and writing is highlighted, which in turn established a fertile ground in which the nationalist ideas of the early modern period’s Lithuanian nation could germinate.

This study attempts to find out whether during the first half of the 20th century in Vilnius Jewish culture was a separate cultural space or an integral part of the city’s cultural scene. The research is based on analysis of documents and periodical press in Lithuanian, Yiddish, and Polish. The article evaluates two aspects of participation in cultural life: active participation (artists) and consuming (the public). Analysis of the periodical press and archival documents allows to claim that involvement of Jewish artists differed in different types of culture: Jewish artists and musicians were visible and valued by the non-Jewish public, whereas Yiddish theatre and literature were noticed very sporadically.

Lithuania was included in the scope of international humanitarian organizations in the early post-war period. Although the mission of the American Aid Administration, the American Red Cross and Lady Murielė Paget helped to alleviate Lithuania’s difficult social situation, humanitarian aid to Lithuania was provided without much enthusiasm. This was due to funding problems and political factors, as well as competition between international humanitarian organizations, and not always peaceful relations between the Lithuanian government and humanitarian organizations. Only Lady Paget’s mission has had closer ties with local authorities and long-term results.
