Energiewende: And the Energy Security of the Czech Republic and Poland

The study focuses on the impact of the Energiewende (EW), i.e. German shift towards a decarbonized economy, and more specifically the large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources (RES), on the energy sectors of its eastern neighbors – the Czech Republic and Poland. Firstly, we provide a reflection of the EW by the Czech and Polish grid operators and energy policy decision-makers. Secondly, we introduce the possible pathways of EW’s future development, using the scenario analysis method. Thirdly, we provide a thorough explanation of the impact mechanisms through which the changes on the German electricity market are translated to changes to the ones of the Czech Republic and Poland. Fourthly, we evaluate the impact itself. Lastly, we provide a set of recommendations to both Czech and Polish decision-making bodies.

Adolescent psychosocial development in Brno: An ELSPAC Study 2005–2011

Our longitudinal findings are in line with published research describing current adolescence as a dynamic stage of life during which an individual‟s personal participation or influence on his or her development sharply increases. This leads, amongst other things, to higher variability of developmental changes and to an erosion of some stereotypes about the psychological and social life of adolescents. The respondents of the Brno longitudinal study (ELSPAC) represent a new generation of Czech adolescents. They were born in the time of turbulent social changes when political, economic and cultural conditions were significantly changing bringing along shifts in lifestyles, social norms and values of all generations including the parents of current adolescents. It can be hypothesised this society-wide change partially moderated the traditional inter generational conflict between adolescents and adults. We can speculate that the adults, not only the adolescents, partially spent the past two decades searching for a new personal and social identity (e.g. career changes, social security decrease, increase in personal freedom and responsibility of own life course). What was appreciated in the beginning of the 1990s as new possibilities – e.g. freedom in opinions and attitudes, opportunity to attain quality education, foreign travel, opportunities for self-actualisation etc. – is perceived as commonplace by today‟s adolescents.

This ethnographic study analyses the (re)production of gender in the classroom. It is theoretically grounded in the ethno-methodological approach and inspired by the poststructuralist research of children and gender. This focuses on 11-13 years old children in school environment (music, art, and family education classes). The analysis applies a complex perspective on gender reproduction within the classroom and focuses on gender at distinct levels (the level of everyday interaction, the level of discourse and positioning of individuals within the discourse, and the level of individual identities and the importance of gender for girls and boys).

This ethno-political study deals with the relation between Romany politics and Roma policy. It analyses how politics is done by Roma people in the Czech Republic and at the same time how Roma people are approached and accommodated in Czech policy. It offers an insight into various forms of the present Roma politics and reflects the ways and circumstances under which the mutual dialogue is allowed by the majority politics. The book contains the theoretical introduction (discussing the influence of the state, cultural specifics, and majority political arena) and four portraits of contemporary Roma politicians. Interception of Electronic Communications in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

One of the most important forming factors of the distribution of public powers in the Czech Republic is its totalitarian history. There is a strong sense of distrust towards official institutions in the general public. It is probably due to this fact, that the procedures and powers of public bodies and agencies are set very rigidly. The principle of legality is set in Art. 2 para. 3 of the Czech Constitution (Act No. 1/1993 Sb. Constitution of the Czech Republic), which states that “State authority is to serve all citizens and may be asserted only in cases, within the bounds, and in the manner provided forby law” and in Art. 2 para. 2 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms (the Resolution of the Presidium of the Czech National Council of 16 December 1992 on the declaration of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms as a part of the constitutional order of the Czech Republic No. 2/1993 Sb.), which states that “State authority may be asserted only in cases and within the bounds provided for by law and only in the manner prescribed by law”. Since all the public authorities authorized to intercept telecommunication fall within the scope of these articles, they are permitted to act only within the framework of what is expressly allowed for them by law.

Inscribing Difference and Resistance: Indigenous Women’s Personal Non-fiction and Life Writing in Australia and North America

The monograph examines the ways in which Indigenous women’s non-fiction published in the 1990s contributed to theoretical articulations of Indigenous feminism and to a historiographic counter-discourse which has intervened into the dominant narratives of nation-building in settler colonies. Personal non-fiction and life writing by Native American authors Paula Gunn Allen and Anna Lee Walters (USA), by First Nations authors Lee Maracle and Shirley Sterling (Canada), and by Aboriginal authors Jackie Huggins and Doris Pilkington Garimara (Australia) are analyzed in detail to demonstrate how a hybrid writing style, combining scholarly criticism with auto/biography and fictionalized storytelling, is used to inscribe Indigenous women’s cultural difference, subjugated knowledges, transgenerational trauma from colonization, and resistance to forced assimilation.

The book describes the history of two civilization spheres in the territory of present-day Vietnam: The Viet culture in the north, developing under a direct influence of China, and the Champa culture in the south, formed by small independent indianised communities. By the 15th century, the growth of the Viet statehood reached its peak in the creation of a centralized realm. On the other hand, Champa was driven back by the expanding Viets, a far-reaching defeat resulting in their gradual regress in the following centuries. The authors offer a chronological explanation based on Vietnamese and Chinese chronicles. They present two main trends: The transition from a thousand-year-old Chinese domination to independence, and the power shift from the Buddhist sangha to military rulers and neo-Confucian civil administration.

The book describes the modern history of Vietnam from the 16th century till the present time. It covers the development of Vietnamese statehood before the colonial era and under the dynasties Lê, Mạc, and under the influential families of Trịnh and Nguyễn. After the Tây Sơn unification, the rule was returned back to the hands of Nguyễns with the help of French advisers. Later, the French took over the power in the war with China. Their colonial rule was not satisfactory for Vietnamese and it stimulated local nationalism. The war with the Western countries in the second half of the 20th century led to partial and formal friendship with its allies (China and the Soviet Union). Post-war modernization, own political authority, and renewed Confucian values are the main features of the recent development.

One of the most researched and discussed problems of the Bronze Age in the Aegean is the question of the absolute date of “the Santorini eruption”, i.e. the explosion of the Santorini volcano, a disaster that affected the lives of people in the vast region from Egypt to the Middle East to Central Europe. Opinions of natural sciences and traditional archaeology do not match as they determine that the event could have happened in a broad period from the mid-17th to the end of the 16th century BC. Intergenerationality is one of the most natural aspects of learning, which stays with us for all of our lives. The age difference between the learner and the person teaching feels natural. The general assumption is that this age difference will guarantee a sufficiency of information, stimuli and experience which the learner will be able to profit from. This volume is trying to problematize this “natural feel” of intergenerational learning. We are showing that learning situations in which people from different generations encounter one another are specific in many respects: by learning contents, by types of activity of the individual participants while providing and accepting learning stimuli, by the variety of learning situations and opportunities. The book explores at the theoretical level and also by empirical research of intergenerational learning across social environments: in school, in the workplace, and in communities.
