The formation of the information and scientific-cultural space is the most important task of the libraries. Today, when the world is affected by an unprecedented pandemic and people live in isolation libraries are in front of extremely great challenge.The work of libraries in a remote duty acquires a great importance because it is carried out in new conditions with help of the modern information technologies.The activities for the realization of this pressing task are focused in two main directions: 1. Inner library work. 2. Readers facilities.The library activity in the Central Library of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the present situation was implemented at a remote mode of operation – a retroconversion of the library catalogs and digitization of the rare documents from our collections. From 13.03 to 13.05.2020 more than 8000 bibliographic records were created and 17 titles in 5141 files were displayed in digital collections. The work in the national scientific program Cultural and historical heritage, national memory and social development whose implementation was not ceased during these two months, consisted in editing of more than 1000 bibliographic records and displaying of 11 periodical titles (38 series in 6130 files). Remote duty was in force for all of the current initiatives, which were carried out before the state of emergency and were periodically displayed and disseminated on the website of the Library and its facebook page.The reader services during this period were, of course, not provided in the traditional way. The policy of our Library is to offer an open access to all of its resources. Our digital library encompasses 20 collections – 3943 titles, 282 383 files. During this period an abrupt increase in the use of the electronic catalog and the digital collections was observed.Indeed, this does not represent the full range of the versatile library activities and is by no means an alternative to the traditional library work, but we do believe that it is a big step forward and we will continue to work hard in this direction in the near future.

A computer terminal with an electronic tourist map has opened in the “Stilian Chilingirov” Regional Library in Shumen. It provides information about the cultural and historical heritage of the Shumen region, which is of national and local importance but is poorly popularized and today remains outside the traditional tourist routes. The library provided access to its information arrays for blind people through a specialized electronic device.

The paper presents the history of the Union of Local History “Mizia”, which is established on November 9, 1965 in Veliko Tarnovo by volunteers – managers and librarians from four libraries: in Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Lovech and Pleven. The article summarises the initial results from an evidence-based study which is exploring the response to the COVID-19 pandemic of the library sectors in Qatar. The methodology of this study is based on the uses of content analysis from the contents of websites, press publications, social media and official statements mostly in English and Arabic. These materials are analysed using NVivo. Although this study captures only data from the two initial months of the library closures (mid-March 2020–mid May 2020), some notable trends are showing which library services are most visible in the conditions of self-isolation and social distancing. The article also includes a model for analysing the potential for transforming library services in the spirit of digital transformation. The stressful social isolation can be seen as a catalyst for the digital transformation of libraries. This model can be a helpful tool in the process of identifying institutional priorities for digital transformation.

Along with other cultural sectors, the library sector in Bulgaria was put to a serious test due to COVID-19. The entire network of public libraries turned out to be closed. The library is both a physical and a virtual place. Physical presence continues to be a strong support for communities. The library remains a space for a wide range of purposes - reading, communication, learning, playing, meetings and more. Physical presence serves the economic development and revitalization of neighborhoods or settlements and strengthens community identity. These are values that, in line with reality and new challenges, remain leading in the future development of libraries in the country. As a result of the arisen situation and the need for social distancing and self-isolation of people, it was resorted to the only publicly available method of communication, namely, the active use of online services and all opportunities provided by the global network for access to information.

However the real and biggest challenge for the “Pencho Slaveykov” Regional Library – Varna, in the conditions of COVID-19 caused social isolation, was the organization of the XVIII Reading People Marathon.The annual event, organized by the Varna Library, was held for the first time online only.

The two-month period of isolation required a complete reorganization of the library activity both in the work with readers and with the collections and the electronic catalogs. The Library team was faced with the dilemma – either complete cessation of work, leaving employees at home until the state of emergency is lifted, or preparing an organizational plan for remote work. The first option was rejected immediately as the “it is easiest to do nothing” principle would lead to social and professional problems.

The presented short statement describes the characteristics of the digital platform (digital library) РЕГИНА ПИ (REGINA PI), created ten years ago by a consortium of four regional libraries. The excellent functionality of the platform is highlighted along with the significant investment of public funds in the project. The need of future enrichment and development of the digital library is motivated with five arguments and the recovery of РЕГИНА ПИ is strongly recommended by the academic community.

In the first days of the state of emergency, “Petar Stapov” Regional Library – Targovishte developed a plan for activities based on effective solutions and aiming at keeping people healthy, calm, able to work, informed and connected. At the end of March, the Library joined the GLBF initiative, part of the Get Your Fact Straight project, which focuses citizens' attention on media literacy and in particular on the dissemination of educational resources to combat misinformation on social networks.

“P. K. Yavorov” Regional Library – Burgas accepted the challenges during the crisis (pandemic) related to COVID-19 through active voluntary participation at the Municipal Crisis Headquarters in the city. During this period, the most endangered by the coronavirus were the elderly, our parents and this fact provoked our social self-consciousness as an institution dedicated to society.Along with the volunteer activity, the team of the Library did not stop its main library activity, related to the books, reading, presentation of favorite artists and replenishment of the library collection. In just a few days we were challenged to reorganize our work according to the prescriptions of the Ministry of Health in a way that allows us to continue our normal functioning, while complying with anti-epidemic measures to protect the health of library staff and their users. “Lyuben Karavelov” Regional Library – Ruse complied with the following priorities: continuing the main tasks of the Library, uninterrupted contact with users, maintaining physical distance and at the same time providing quality, modern, remote library and information services.

In the conditions of remote service, the online services on the library’s website were available to the users. A part of our services during the social isolation were the virtual reference service and the responding of e-mail inquiries from readers. We have published online a variety of educational, informational and entertainment materials, links and web addresses. The topical information of public interest was related to various areas: health recommendations, changes in the tax liabilities deadlines, the mode of service in public institutions and markets, etc. The virtual Library Portal for health services in Silistra was frequently visited. The bibliotherapy was one of the forms of working with readers – we shared materials that we assumed would help to overcome stress and anxiety. The team work proved its efficiency also in the repairs that were performed - many of them with our own efforts.

In the conditions of COVID-19 our main tool is our cleaning and disinfection machine. It was purchased two months before the state of emergency was declared. Its purpose is, in addition to cleaning and disinfecting the collection, to provide safe and healthy working conditions for librarians and to educate readers to care for the book. Handing it to them clean, they are silently reminded to keep it.
