The paper refers to the Bulgarian revival book “Poteka od Sveti Calvario” (1858), intended for the South Catholic community in the Bulgarian territories of the Ottoman Empire, specifically in the Plovdiv area. The edition shows up in the printed reference books of the Bulgarian retrospective bibliography only on secondary sources. During the research work on the project “Digitalization of the Repertoire of books from the Bulgarian Revival (1801– Габриела Ангелова, Пламена Златкова 19 1878)”, a physical copy appeared in the collection of old printed books of the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”. The present article aims to incorporate the less-known edition into academic society by giving basic information considering its content and historical background.

Пандемията от COVID-19: катализатор на дигиталната трансформация в библиотеките?

The article summarises the initial results from an evidence-based study which is exploring the response to the COVID-19 pandemic of the library sectors in Qatar. The methodology of this study is based on the uses of content analysis from the contents of websites, press publications, social media and official statements mostly in English and Arabic. These materials are analysed using NVivo. Although this study captures only data from the two initial months of the library closures (mid-March 2020–mid May 2020), some notable trends are showing which library services are most visible in the conditions of self-isolation and social distancing. The article also includes a model for analysing the potential for transforming library services in the spirit of digital transformation. The stressful social isolation can be seen as a catalyst for the digital transformation of libraries. This model can be a helpful tool in the process of identifying institutional priorities for digital transformation.

Някои от предизвикателствата на пандемията CОVID-19 пред малките библиотеки в страната: с акцент върху читалищните библиотеки

Along with other cultural sectors, the library sector in Bulgaria was put to a serious test due to COVID-19. The entire network of public libraries turned out to be closed. The library is both a physical and a virtual place. Physical presence continues to be a strong support for communities. The library remains a space for a wide range of purposes - reading, communication, learning, playing, meetings and more. Physical presence serves the economic development and revitalization of neighborhoods or settlements and strengthens community identity. These are values that, in line with reality and new challenges, remain leading in the future development of libraries in the country. As a result of the arisen situation and the need for social distancing and self-isolation of people, it was resorted to the only publicly available method of communication, namely, the active use of online services and all opportunities provided by the global network for access to information.

The work in the Central Library of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the current situation was implemented at a remote mode of operation – a retroconversion of the library catalogs and digitization of the rare documents from our collections was committed. From 13.03 to 13.05.2020 more than 8000 bibliographic records were created and 17 titles in 5141 files were displayed in digital collections.

Librarians and readers will be calmer about their health if they have a Bookshower book cleaning machine. It uses ultraviolet rays and a high-performance filter to sterilize books completely – from their cover to their inner pages in just 30 seconds. Machines of this type are not very expensive, but they are a problem for our budgets. It is good to consider targeted funding from the Ministry of Culture, because such an investment has a lasting effect.

The presentation of authors online showed that even in times of social isolation, the Library is a preferred partner and innovator in using the opportunities offered by the digital environment. From March 24 to May 20 we presented 9 writers – author and illustrator Nusha Royanova, children's writer Radostina Nikolova, social etiquette expert Nevena Basarova, poetess Maria Doneva, writer Dimitar Kalburov, author and screenwriter Alexander Chobanov, writer and founder of the Association for Urban Reading Rooms Alexander Shpatov, writers Ralitsa Gencheva and Radostina Angelova. Online conversations with them covered readers with different interests and met their cultural needs.

“P. K. Yavorov” Regional Library – Burgas accepted the challenges during the crisis (pandemic) related to COVID-19 through active voluntary participation at the Municipal Crisis Headquarters in the city. During this period, the most endangered by the coronavirus were the elderly, our parents and this fact provoked our social self-consciousness as an institution dedicated to society.Along with the volunteer activity, the team of the Library did not stop its main library activity, related to the books, reading, presentation of favorite artists and replenishment of the library collection. Activities inherent in each library as major centers for cultural and spiritual-moral development.

Регионална библиотека „Партений Павлович” – Силистра: работа в условията на извънредно положение

In the conditions of remote service, the online services on the library’s website were available to the users. A part of our services during the social isolation were the virtual reference service and the responding of e-mail inquiries from readers. We have published online a variety of educational, informational and entertainment materials, links and web addresses. The topical information of public interest was related to various areas: health recommendations, changes in the tax liabilities deadlines, the mode of service in public institutions and markets, etc. The virtual Library Portal for health services in Silistra was frequently visited. The bibliotherapy was one of the forms of working with readers – we shared materials that we assumed would help to overcome stress and anxiety. The team work proved its efficiency also in the repairs that were performed - many of them with our own efforts.

In the conditions of COVID-19 our main tool is our cleaning and disinfection machine. It was purchased two months before the state of emergency was declared. Its purpose is, in addition to cleaning and disinfecting the collection, to provide safe and healthy working conditions for librarians and to educate readers to care for the book. Handing it to them clean, they are silently reminded to keep it.
