The disastrous decline of the Polish state in the year 1795 has significantly ploughed through the biographies of Poles, especially those who took an active part in the political and cultural life of King Stanislaus Augustus’s epoch. As a result, they were forced to make new existential choices and to play social roles along the lines of the forcefully superimposed legal-and-administrative reality; they were doomed to share the lot of national slaves and outcasts. Out of the several possible post-Partition attitudes, behaviours and experiences, the author has selected and discussed five, deemed by him to be representative to the period of late 18th/early 19th century, i.e.: the landowner, the prisoner, the hostage, the soldier-in-foreign-service, the ‘organic worker’.

This sketch attempts at grasping and defining the specificity of an autobiographical project which turns out to be the most essential construction element of Sztyrmer’s prose writing. The project’s specificity consists in a willingness to extract from occurrences having been experienced their dormant potentiality, and in approaching one’s own biography as a script for a literary work. This technique of reprocessing and multiplication of an existential experience bears several traits of an essayed autobiography written out into a cycle. Consequently, a collection rendering a dynamic image of the ‘self’ is meant, rather than a closed-up unambiguous work. It is this subjectivity of the character, displayed as it is at various angles, that determines the centre of Sztyrmer’s fictional world, if not actually becoming the only essential theme of the story being spun.

Sienkiewicz przekracza granice. O "przełomie" w życiu i twórczości pisarza

This dissertation deals with an important moment (years 1878–1882) in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s personal as well as creative biography. The convictions he expressed owing to his stay in the U.S. have changed soon after his return home. The choice of a milieu, the search for a convenient venue for implementation of his artistic plans got clashed at that point against strictly financial demands, a need to get stabilised, especially given the perspective of his expected marriage. A tension between real-life necessities and ideological/aesthetic convictions was markedly expressed not only in Sienkiewicz’s writing output but also in his private correspondence (particularly, in his letters to S. Witkiewicz). This paper attempts at describing these .trials-and-tribulations. experienced by this author on the eve of the great success of his Trilogy historical novel cycle.

The accounts or bills noted down in Stanisław Brzozowski’s letters are read here as an idiolect of an autobiographic discourse, rendering even clearer the gap between an author’s plans and expectations and a real-life discomfort. The ‘bookkeeping’ effort expressed in figures which turn out to be euphemised signs of helplessness, revealing communication- and identity-related disorders and disturbances being immanent of epistolography. Whilst evidencing a strife for dignity, Brzozowski’s accounts can be recognised as ‘dis-identifiers’ of endangered humanism.

„Drogi promienia”. O biografii i opowiadaniach wspomnieniowych Bronisławy Ostrowskiej

This article discuses some hitherto-unknown facts of the poetess’s biography, based upon recently detected archival materials. The most important one among these – the once famous (by-now-forgotten) so-called Brzezicka’s affair – created a unique situation with which Ostrowska had to struggle in her life and poetic activity, as testified, to recall but a single trait, the specific features of her mother’s portrait comprised in the lyric verse and recollection short-stories. Analysis of the autobiographical discourse of "W starym lustrze" has been enriched with a facts-related resource facilitating the deciphering of the numerous allusions and understatements.

Mazurskie miniatury biograficzne (ustalenia wstępne)

Polish-speaking East-Prussians of the Evangelical confession were wont to choose as the subject-matter of their versed correspondence pieces, published in local newspapers or calendars, elements of biographies of various neighbourhood and vicinity dwellers that had happened to fall victim to a disaster (fire, manslaughter, sudden death, etc.). Descriptions of the course of a tragic incident, with exhibited ‘course of the life’ of the affected individual, are organised by a catalogue of religious, moral and social values in demand amongst the Prussian Mazurians. These Mazurian biographical miniatures enable insight into nineteenth-century customs, mentality and everyday life of this borderland community.

Wpływ bez lęku. Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz czyta Juliusza Słowackiego

J.-M. Rymkiewicz’s reading of Słowacki may be defined using the category of influence understood, after H. Bloom, in a dual manner: First, the writing of the contemporary Polish author (Rymkiewicz) reveals a conflict between the ‘older’ and the ‘younger’ Bard. Second, Rymkiewicz situates himself as a successor in the circle of Słowacki’s historiosophical project and poses the question of how useful this project may be for our understanding of twentieth-century history of Poland. Whereas Mickiewicz denotes a myth-accursed biography which is of necessity liable to a deconstruction in our time, Słowacki stands for scenarios of suffering, meeting today’s need for cultural self-description.

The Italianate name 'Birbante-rokka', coined by Adam Mickiewicz in his Pan Tadeusz, is dealt with. The name appears not to be conformant to the formative patterns of Italian. This paper attempts at explaining the anomaly, taking into account the metric reasons as well as a possible influence of English, the language Mickiewicz knew quite well.
